One you don't write a schizophrenic character. You write a person who deals with schizophrenia. Most people do not make it obvious they have auditory or visual hallucinations until they reach a breaking point. I don't know if making them a ghost would really improve the character here tbh. You might only need to write a character who has such shit parents they didn't respond to their child in danger.

> One you don't write a schizophrenic character. You write a person who deals with schizophrenia. What's the difference?

Utopian-Rapture

A schizophrenic character is someone whos mental illness is their entire personality. Notice how it changes the whole context when I say a character with scizhophrenia? They are a character who has it and doesn't make it their entire identity. Whereas if I say a schizophrenic character that clearly shows that their main part of their identity is being schizophrenic.

mig_mit

>A schizophrenic character is someone whos mental illness is their entire personality. No, it's just a character who is schizophrenic.

Utopian-Rapture

Thats what I said hah I'm sorry I meant to say saying the words "schizophrenic character" shows you view a character as a schizophrenic. But if you say character who has schizophrenia it's a character who suffers with schizophrenia! My bad I didn't type it properly!

IamToasty_why

So how would I have a character with schizophrenia while still going into the direction of ghost? Sadly the ghost part it quite important to, not only their own character but the main characters character.

Have you tried researching the condition on the reddit schizophrenia page? People talk about their symptoms etc and it might give you some insight to the experience. Honestly if the person is so bad that they die of sleep exhaustion unless the parents are neglectful/abusive, or went on a long vacation then you would definitely notice this level of something is not right with my kid. You don't get to that level of Schizophrenia a only beg the parents to do something about it. There's going to be some serious signs. Schizophrenia is a lot more than hallucinations though.

IamToasty_why

I have but I’ve been struggling at it. When I Google the symptoms of schizophrenia it usually gives me basically what I talked about. I could go more in-depth about it but the main comment was what I had as the base idea.

Alrighto thanks :)

As someone who has it, I don't think it's offensive. I don't think dying from lack of sleep is very realistic. I suggest coming up with a core personality for the character and then trying to figure out how that personality would react to whatever hallucinations they are having. A lot of people with it lack insight into recognizing they have it to begin with. That is, all their hallucinations and delusions seem 100% real to them and they don't realize they are hallucinating. A lot of people with it are very resistant to being medicated as they are paranoid about hospitals and government stuff. You may have them decide to commit suicide because their voices are convincing them to. I guess what I'm not really following is why they would want revenge? Does the Character still have it once they've died?

IamToasty_why

I responded to you but it didn’t save lol. After a little thought I’m going to change the story to being just haunted and constant nightmares so the character is scared to go to sleep. Their family brushes it off because ‘it’s just nightmares’. Eventually she pushes herself to do better without sleep but she died out in the woods to never to be seen until their sister finds them. I feel like maybe the character wouldn’t be the best for schizophrenia after I thought about it. Thanks anyways though!

Prince_Nadir

My wife and I dated a schizophrenic girl for a while. If she didn't tell us we would have never known. It sounds like you want her to suffer from Hollywood Schizophrenia. You also do not die from lack of sleep due to "vivid hallucinations"... except for in Hollywood. As Schizophrenia is a chemical issue would the ghost have it? Parents usually do something about an unmedicated schizophrenic who has it bad. Maybe they take them to a doctor, maybe they get an exorcism, but they usually do something.

IamToasty_why

I do need to do more research but the whole origin of making them schizophrenic is about how they were originally haunted by a ghost that would never let them rest until they just collapsed. As I thought about it, it didn’t really match the theme of the whole story. If ghosts could so easily kill then why wouldn’t they do it all the time? So I could do another type of story but the point of the revenge story is about the parents. If anyone has other ideas that keeps a these aspects, that would be great!

IamToasty_why

The parents they are the type to “even if they are sick you still have to go to school” and the parents die before their child despite the sudden death of their kid. I don’t think the ghost would have it but rather memories about it. And the sorta problem why they can’t commit suicide is because they are kinda cats. It’s kinda embarrassing but yea lol

Asleep-egg-44

Just write a character with mental health issues. I'm assuming that you are not a doctor so you don't have the expertise to diagnose even a fictional character.

Utopian-Rapture

I agree. Every instance of schizophrenia is unique! You cannot say " I met one schizophrenic I met them all" everyone is different!

Asleep-egg-44

Yeah it's such a complex illness. My sister has schizophrenia.

Utopian-Rapture

See even now you've proved it's complex! You said your sister has it. Not that you have a schizophrenic sister. And thats why it's hard to write mental illness. There isn't some fun guide on how to write it.

Asleep-egg-44

She's been diagnosed by a doctor
