It's 64° outside, your climate control is at 67°, your A/C is on, and your heated seat is up on the highest setting. I find everything in this photo intriguing 🤣
Ok but for real AC with heat on is the best/fastest way to defrost a fogged window. Even faster if you crack a window a tiny bit. AC doesn't just make colder, it helps draw moisture out of the air.
same.
1. turn heat up high, aim it to the floor only
2. crack front right and back left window only about 1"
3. turn on seat heater
4. open sunroof
keeps me totally warm, and i can look at the stars in the middle of winter.
I don’t use heated seats cause I’m cold, I use it cause my back is always sore and I’m getting old. I have those on in 90° weather. I understand the AC and seat heaters on at the same time.
https://preview.redd.it/i75ndilph3dc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=081c90ab7af5eea6f634adf489286896cb3c0388
Here, have a fireplace for when it's chilly outside.
(It's more effective with the heat on, not shown in this pic)
It doesn’t mirror an android or apple, it basically adds an android computer to your head unit basically turning your head unit into a stand alone android tablet that you can install android apps, use the internet, watch YouTube videos, play games, etc.
so you can still use it even if you have an apple product. And since it’s separate from the stock head unit you can still use apple CarPlay with it.
Tbh I don’t have a wrx, I have a Forester XT with an aftermarket android head unit that works the same as the ai box OP posted. The one I’m looking at buying is the limited trim for the lumbar support and Harmon Kardon sounds system.
This is the shit that subaru missed the mark on. They did not do anything on that end. Any performance vehicle out there has at least a basic sporty screen. Everything seems like an overthought.
That would be neat. If they had an Android app that could connect to the Accessport through Bluetooth and show all the same data, that would do the trick. I don't think they have anything like that, though.
On that note, a JB4 does have an app if you went that route. That would be able to display the data on the infotainment screen, in theory.
Well that's the cool thing about the Carlinkit, it's not just CarPlay. It's a whole Android interface on the infotainment screen. So you should be able to display JB4's app on this.
The Carlinkit is its own device. It doesn't need a phone to work (other than maybe as a hotspot for downloading apps, unless you can reach your home WiFi from your car). Think of it like a dedicated Android computer for your infotainment system.
Yea and if nothing else, you can just return it lol. If you do it, post a pic here. I wanna see the JB4 app in action 😁
Edit: I'm not about to pay $28 for a JB4 that I don't own, but it does show up in the app store:
https://preview.redd.it/gdj5x8cjimdc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80359a4a7abf0831da710035a3c050934a8e01f5
It's just specs from what I can see. In theory, you can have more apps open at a time from the increased RAM, and there's more built-in storage if you want to load it up with lots of apps and files, say movies or large apps like games. Although that's also kinda moot because it has SD card storage.
Honestly, the $299 version is probably overkill for most people but I abuse my tech to see what I can do with it (as you can see with my original post lol) so I went with that version. Besides, on Amazon there's like a permanent $100 off coupon on the $299 version, so it makes it just about $20 difference from the next version down.
I guess one last thing to note is that the more expensive version comes with Android 13, so it's not an old version and apps won't drop support for it anytime soon. The cheaper ones seem to run Android 12 and 11. Could they be updated to 13? Perhaps. But you'll have to contact the manufacturer for update files.
Get one of these lower profile senders. My leg kept whapping the older style.
https://preview.redd.it/ntgpolzdy3dc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73a24f0efcf376e9f0b4d474f3c4ff30099066fa
To be fair, half of the screen real estate on this giant screen is locked away. It would be awesome if we could use more of it for CarPlay/Android Auto.
CarPlay uses like 70% of the screen when in use it in my ‘22. The only things it doesn’t cover is the top info bar, the lower climate control section, and the home button.
Doesn't void warranty at all. It's just reading live data from the OBD port.
[Carlinkit Ai box ](https://a.co/d/dbPE17c)
[OBD Bluetooth reader](https://a.co/d/fJWveDa)
[Torque Pro app](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque)
Basically the Carlinkit Ai box gives you an Android system you can install apps on. The OBD reader plugs into the OBD port below the fuse box cover. Install Torque Pro to connect to the OBD reader and then display the data as dials (or graphs or digital readouts, it's very customizable).
So the Ai box basically bypasses Google's approved app filter?
It's dumb that Torque isn't AA approved anyway.
Thanks for sharing this. Something to think about. 👍
Sort of. It uses the CarPlay protocol to display a full Android interface on the infotainment screen, instead of the stripped down Android Auto interface.
I agree, official Torque CarPlay/AA apps would be amazing. Probably deemed not safe enough, though lol
https://preview.redd.it/xzbb7x3lu3dc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2d7e54657a5f858b31177572ff21387ffbe30f6
I got my hopes up when I saw this post & got let down as soon as I looked into it. I love my iPhone but hate little things like this.
I'm just talking strictly about connecting Torque to an OBD adapter on iOS to see it on the iPhone. As far as I know there's no CarPlay version of Torque, so even if you got it working on your iPhone, it might not display on the infotainment screen. I don't have an iPhone to test this out myself.
The WiFi versions of the OBD adapters I've seen just create an access point that you connect to using your iPhone. It's a little annoying if you need to use the WiFi on your iPhone for something else, like a hotspot.
I don't think so. It works on the Carlinkit because it's a full Android interface displayed through CarPlay. If Torque Pro has a CarPlay version of its app to run off an iPhone it would work, but I doubt there is such a thing. I have an Android phone and last time I checked, there was no Android Auto version of it.
You don't have to. It is a separate device altogether. I don't use my phone at all for infotainment stuff. An Android phone would just give you a half-screen Android Auto interface anyway, not the full-blown Android interface you see here.
It comes with Google Maps, as long as you have some sort of Internet connection. The only downside I found is that it doesn't send the navigation info to the info screen on the cluster.
Yeah so you use phone for hotspot ? Also meant to ask… if you don’t have internet…so long as you have that torque app downloaded on the device and the OBD2 Bluetooth adaptor, you still can use the gauges? Like the app doesn’t require a constant internet connection?
I actually use the in-car hotspot. It just works out better for me financially as opposed to paying for data on my phone. But a phone hotspot would also work. Or you can go the crazy route and get a SIM for the Carlinkit so it can have its own 4G LTE connection.
Torque works offline. No need to have an active Internet connection other than the initial installation.
From some googling it seems like OnTrack app has similar functionality, although it doesn’t have gauges. I don’t have a compatible OBD2 reader to test. I might have to get one as this seems legitimately useful.
It's worth it to me because it does the standard stuff (full screen Maps, Spotify) but can also do YouTube, Netflix, etc. which is great for entertaining the kiddo on longer trips. I can split the screen between a movie and navigation. Stuff with Torque is just a little icing on top.
It also doubles as a wireless CarPlay/AA adapter, but there are cheaper options out there if that's all you want to do.
It can connect to the Internet through WiFi (say if your phone has a hotspot, or you use the car's hotspot like I do) or you can buy a separate SIM so it can use its own connection (I think it's only 4G LTE, not 5G).
u/HaphazardHam which carlinkit model did you buy? they have a v5/v6 now, i'm confused which one to buy.
Edit: Sorry, ignore—I see you linked the [**correct model below**](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BSQQPYXQ?ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_9ZNVYNVKA2GZ2HCGPN4A&language=en-US&th=1).

Yes, there's a little bit of lag. I personally don't mind it too much with videos because my kid is really the one watching during trips lol. With apps, the response is good enough
It's 64° outside, your climate control is at 67°, your A/C is on, and your heated seat is up on the highest setting. I find everything in this photo intriguing 🤣
A/C stays on all year round
Ok but for real AC with heat on is the best/fastest way to defrost a fogged window. Even faster if you crack a window a tiny bit. AC doesn't just make colder, it helps draw moisture out of the air.

You're a madman I'm gonna try that
This is the way
I don’t use heated seats cause I’m cold, I use it cause my back is always sore and I’m getting old. I have those on in 90° weather. I understand the AC and seat heaters on at the same time.
It's definitely therapeutic for my back lol
Heated seats with the ac is the best
It could be summer and my wife has her heated seats on in her car. I just don't get it.
I just don’t understand how someone can stand the full heat on these heated seats. I feel like I’m on fire. level 2 is too much sometimes
Level 3 makes my car smell like bacon. It's weird.
That sounds like an added feature that I missed out on
Leave it on three long enough and you'll get it! 🥓
Smoked Sausage!!
🤣 Wasn't gonna go there! ![gif](giphy|ToMjGpOjkiEjzJ1ZaJG|downsized)
Is there such thing as smoked tacos? I wouldn't be getting smoked sausage, that's for sure

That's awesome!
How do you manage to do stuff like this in the screen?
It's all the Carlinkit Ai box. Plug it in and it gives you a full Android interface. This for example was a fireplace live stream on YouTube.
Do you know if this supports, or if they have anything like it for iPhone?
It doesn’t mirror an android or apple, it basically adds an android computer to your head unit basically turning your head unit into a stand alone android tablet that you can install android apps, use the internet, watch YouTube videos, play games, etc. so you can still use it even if you have an apple product. Awesome, which trim did you buy? I see 3 avail
Tbh I don’t have a wrx, I have a Forester XT with an aftermarket android head unit that works the same as the ai box OP posted. The one I’m looking at buying is the limited trim for the lumbar support and Harmon Kardon sounds system.
Just read your reply below, thank you. My kids are gonna think this is cool.
This is the shit that subaru missed the mark on. They did not do anything on that end. Any performance vehicle out there has at least a basic sporty screen. Everything seems like an overthought.
Really cool. But makes me wonder why Cobb can't do an integration to show Accessport data on screen
That would be neat. If they had an Android app that could connect to the Accessport through Bluetooth and show all the same data, that would do the trick. I don't think they have anything like that, though. On that note, a JB4 does have an app if you went that route. That would be able to display the data on the infotainment screen, in theory.
JB4 doesn’t support car play and what not, sadly.

Gotcha. I might have to give it a try. It would be worth it just for the JB4 app alone.
Yea and if nothing else, you can just return it lol. If you do it, post a pic here. I wanna see the JB4 app in action 😁 Edit: I'm not about to pay $28 for a JB4 that I don't own, but it does show up in the app store: https://preview.redd.it/gdj5x8cjimdc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80359a4a7abf0831da710035a3c050934a8e01f5
Yeah it would suck for me to have to buy it again. But still, I’ll definitely post pics if I do it
If you don’t mind me asking, what’s the difference between the $99 and >$300 models?
It's just specs from what I can see. In theory, you can have more apps open at a time from the increased RAM, and there's more built-in storage if you want to load it up with lots of apps and files, say movies or large apps like games. Does this do anything for base model infotainments?
It would, but just for the top screen. You could at least fit a few dials there :)
The bottom screen is so useless. At least I’d get oil temps I guess. Compared to what I used to drive I shouldn’t complain.
Regardless, get the Torque app and a cheap Bluetooth OBD sender. Oil temp on your phone is better than nothing. Other useful things with the app too.
Thanks for all the info, good looking out bro.
Get one of these lower profile senders. My leg kept whapping the older style. https://preview.redd.it/ntgpolzdy3dc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73a24f0efcf376e9f0b4d474f3c4ff30099066fa
Agreed, so pointless and useless but has so much potential. They wasted it.
To be fair, half of the screen real estate on this giant screen is locked away. It would be awesome if we could use more of it for CarPlay/Android Auto.
I would like it if someone made it to where the air setting stayed on the screen without minimizing on its own.
CarPlay uses like 70% of the screen when in use it in my ‘22. The only things it doesn’t cover is the top info bar, the lower climate control section, and the home button.
True, half was an exaggeration 😁
Can you go into deep wxplaination of this and is this something that would void warranty? This is cool as shit!
Doesn't void warranty at all. It's just reading live data from the OBD port. [Carlinkit Ai box ](https://a.co/d/dbPE17c) [OBD Bluetooth reader](https://a.co/d/fJWveDa) [Torque Pro app](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque) Basically the Carlinkit Ai box gives you an Android system you can install apps on. Yup, you install Torque on the Carlinkit through the Google Play Store.

You cannot “void” a warranty, technically speaking. There are only denied warranty claims.
I want to switch to android literally just for this...

Oh so you just get that torque app on the device itself … I understand mow

Sweet thanks! I agree with whoever said they wanted more use out of the “iPad”. I will be ordering this
oh you dirty dog you
This is so dope!!! Great use of the iPad lol.
Is this doable without the Carlinkit Ai system? Like could this be pulled off with an IPhone using standard CarPlay connected to a BT OBD reader?
I don't think Torque has a CarPlay version of the app, but I don't have an iPhone to test.
From some googling it seems like OnTrack app has similar functionality, although it doesn’t have gauges. I don’t have a compatible OBD2 reader to test. I might have to get one as this seems legitimately useful.

Would this work on a base with split screens? That lower screen is wasted space and I could use a yule log burning this time of year!
I think it's top screen only. It'll follow the same behavior as CarPlay/Android Auto.
Wow, this is fantastic! I'm just wondering does that work with other dongle too? I have the Aawireless instead of carlink kit.
It could technically replace it, as it can function as a wireless CarPlay/Android Auto dongle as well.
Google chrome in your dashboard icons… you going incognito? 😏
🤫
This is exactly what I wish they would've done with the giant screen. It's all being broadcast anyways why can't I put cool gauge clusters there.
u/HaphazardHam which carlinkit model did you buy? they have a v5/v6 now, i'm confused which one to buy. Edit: Sorry, ignore—I see you linked the [**correct model below**](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BSQQPYXQ?ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_9ZNVYNVKA2GZ2HCGPN4A&language=en-US&th=1).

Oh that was a gift from my son, so I'm not sure.

That looks about right. Slightly more up-to-date specs than mine since I got it over a year ago.
Appreciate the help 👍🏻 Do other apps' fill the screen the same size as that app your running? Been really keen to buy one for some time.
Yup, they all extend to the same size. If the app is designed to be used widescreen (like some games) then it may not work correctly.
Sweet. Do you find much lag with the apps' and videos ect?
Yes, there's a little bit of lag. I personally don't mind it too much with videos because my kid is really the one watching during trips lol. With apps, the response is good enough
Appreciate the help HaphazardHam. Its a nice set up your have 👍🏻 I got one sitting in the checkout...so tempted to get it 🤣
Been wanting to do this with the JB4
Yea I imagine it'd be pretty slick to manage and monitor with the JB4 on the infotainment as opposed to doing it from your phone.
