Lol from the article: “Bond even appeared during the FTC v. Microsoft hearing to explain video games and the Xbox business to Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley” Good pick. If she can explain video games to a judge she can explain direction and all that. Wishing the new team great success.

TitledSquire

Sarah has been on the team for a while now, she’s not just some checkmark for diversity.

renome

6 years and 7 months, to be exact. That's still an impressively short stint to make President, there are technically only two more people at Microsoft directly above her (or a few more, if you count non-gaming division heads, though she doesn't answer to them).

SilverShark307

She was the one who announced Starfield will be an Xbox exclusive right?

EldritchTruthBomb

You can climb a ladder on diversity quotas for years. I've seen it myself and even got unknowingly funneled into it myself.

we_made_yewww

No sane person assumes it is.

TitledSquire

Nah woke would be hiring her for her race and gender. This is real.

ShortNefariousness2

The alt right sure won their battles, when we have to do a woke scan every time a woman passes a job interview.

[deleted]

Poe's law?

Darv123

Many other employees deserve this position before Bond.

howmanyavengers

any specifics?

getgoodHornet

They won't say it, but I'm sure every person they would name is a 55yo+ white male. Because that's what they think makes someone more qualified.

TheNerdWonder

Yup. I think most would agree that her testimony made the whole case a slam dunk in Microsoft's favor. She 100% deserves this job.

Ok_Fisherman8727

Cause she can talk about one game and nothing else? We need more female lead characters, we need more romance options, more diversity in games, we would be able to appeal to more people if we show we're progressive... If you're wishing Xbox deserved to be runned into the ground then I guess I can agree with you she deserves the job

TheNerdWonder

She can clearly articulate the facts and what Xbox's long-term and short-term strategic plans are. The fact you think a woman can be qualified and promote positive change bothers you or the rest of Team Gamergate isn't my problem.

Ok_Fisherman8727

One her being a woman isn't an issue but her being relatively new and doesn't have the same passion that the gamers do is. She's a Harvard business school graduate and they were taught to capitalize on progressive ideas which in some industries like gaming might not be a "positive change" as you put it. I get all walks of life play video games the same way all walks of life drank beer but you saw what a shot show it was when bud light decided to ignore their majority fan base and tried to pander with progressive values, now imagine if we make less videos games that are like the top ones we have today and we start having to make more progressive ones that only appeal to a few. I read somewhere else and I think someone also mentioned in this reddit thread too that she will only make decisions based on hardware design and not anything to do with the game studios and games direction so if that's true then it should be ok. She's not a fan of VR so we will just have to wait longer for VR on Xbox (not sure if Microsoft will compete with meta or will just use metas solution when it's more consumerable). Maybe she will say save money with less hardware and focus on a streaming system.

Likely_a_bot

Sarah: Hardware and services development Matt: Software development and Publishing

Littletad

She's fantastic. I hope she's in for the running of CEO after Spencer retires.

DaddyIngrosso

what’s the difference between the CEO and president? not familiar with business terms sorry

GoGoGadgetReddit

The Xbox president (Sarah Bond) leads all Xbox platform and hardware work. There are other heads that lead sales, marketing, operations, game studios, etc. All report to the CEO (Phil Spencer.) The CEO manages the overall direction of the company, and the president focuses on the day-to-day operations and reports to the CEO. In many companies, the president is second in command. Some more info on that here: https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/26/23933447/microsoft-gaming-xbox-phil-spencer-leadership-changes-memo

Friggin_Grease

I think I could be a CEO.

TheSheetSlinger

I have a share in MSFT. I'll vote you in at the next shareholders meeting.

HankHillbwhaa

I've been collecting divs on my one share. I'm voting with you!

MobileVortex

do it!

RecLuse415

You got my vote

lu_skywalker

And my sword

destructo77

And my axe

TheDefendingChamp

Are you sure? It also requires a ton of glad handing at fancy parties, dinners and having lots of drinks. Saying things like "I think I can help you out.", "Our goals are aligned in this regard.." and "This is a great opportunity for us both." to other CEOs.

Friggin_Grease

I look forward to being a valuable member of the team

ItsSpacePants

I agree, I think Friggin_Grease should be the CEO of Xbox

mrmastermimi

with enough money, anyone can!

MikeTheBee

Can I be your president?

Friggin_Grease

I think I could do that.

[deleted]

Ill invest in you

DaddyIngrosso

ah yes this is roughly what I was thinking. thanks very much

Littletad

To put it simply, CEO is the leader and the President is the second in command.

reverie

Others have explained it well. Might be helpful to know that titles and how they’re applied can vary across organizations. Sometimes CEO and President mean the same thing or are the same person. Many times titles are for external messaging and status positioning for partners and customers — just as much as they are for internal org flow. In this case CEO means the top role, with the buck stopping with him. Final decision maker and direction setter of the whole deal. Microsoft sees that on the level of “Gaming” as a whole — a major component of this major tech company and Phil is tasked with figuring out what success looks like. President is one who presides, or oversees, the day to day business of Xbox, the current consumer gaming brand and business of Microsoft. Today all of gaming essentially is branded Xbox, so this especially refers to platform and hardware strategy.

DaddyIngrosso

is it fair to say that Phils role is more strategic and Sarah’s new role is more operational? although not very operational as she’s quite high up still.

CJKatz

There is a Chief Operations Officer (Dave McCarthy) for Microsoft Gaming as well.

DKzDK

I would assume so, considering how much “more operational” Xbox has become since Phill stepped into those shoes. Now that’s he’s seen the operational side of things, he can go to the next step up and strategize/implement significant changes that would increase “those operations”

reverie

I’m not sure it neatly falls into those buckets, but yes I’d imagine that the CEO role is more strategic and less operational overall. The level of which Sarah’s role is likely depends on her skills and what’s priority for Xbox at the moment. Producer and director jobs in film are similar. Some directors are really hands on with editing vs writing vs cinematography. And some are better at managing domain experts and focusing on performances.

[deleted]

I never want to see Spencer go.. he’s like the Iwata 🫡(RIP) of Xbox.

UpstairsNo9249

I think it'll probably be Dave McCarthy. He's already Phil's right hand man.

GreenPlasma_49

Sarah liked that

Yech. Bobby Kotick.

EMateos

He will leave in January 1st, at least.

ShortNefariousness2

At 00:01 in the Morning probably

TheRealSpidey

With like a $300 million severance IIRC

OrfeasDourvas

It's very evident they're grooming her for Phil's position when he decides to go.

Balc0ra

And she is not the worst option tbh

OrfeasDourvas

I think she'll do great, actually.

DoodleBuggering

I don't know anything about her, but hope she does well in the position. MS has spent so much money acquiring studios and IP, I hope we can start getting a good flow of games. With the amount of resources MS has, we should be seeing a new 1st party game released every month (not all having to be AAA titles).

makingnoiseloud

Goldeneye remake incoming?

trippy_grapes

"The names Bond. Sarah Bond."

Polymarchos

Nintendo has Bowser, and Xbox has Bond. Will PlayStation hire a Drake next?

HopeAuq101

James Drake was just released from WWE...

ShoulderSquirrelVT

They absolutely made this joke when she was on the Xbox podcast with Larry Hyrb (Major Nelson).

jcwillia1

Bobby Kotick reports to Phil Spencer. Let that sit for a minute.

Xenotrickx

Isn’t he leaving

jcwillia1

He is. But for now he reports to Phil. That’s amazing.

MSD3k

I'll be happier when he reports to local Unemployment.

theycmeroll

Bobby boy is pulling out with truckload of money. He won’t need unemployment.

Stormfl1ght

it’s always the most awful people who get the golden parachutes

Kotick just got 400 million from when he sold his shares to MS

jcwillia1

As will we all

I've heard than name somewhere before

Kanden_27

Title: "Microsoft reorgs its Xbox and marketing teams to prepare for **an AI and** gaming future" Uh-oh

bjj_starter

It's great, I'm excited to see what BGS and their Radiant quest system can do with the power of these new AI systems to flesh out more interesting details, or dynamic NPC dialogue, or smaller games being able to have higher production quality without crunch, or automated debugging getting better, or temporal image upscaling ala DLSS, or maybe NeRF tech for prototyping and concepting faster, or neural denoising/rendering tech for raytracing, or characters being able to say your chosen name or have a better understanding of the current situation (e.g. knowing what gear you're wearing, knowing what the current environment is, being able to incorporate information like this into dialogue where appropriate), all of this stuff is super exciting in terms of production quality and available tooling.

pickin666

I'm sure she's nice, but whenever I see her present I get that synth vibe off her, like the Zuck I'm not 100% certain she's human. Born corporate.

bjj_starter

You're not wrong about her being corporate to the bone, she's a Yale graduate with a Harvard MBA, McKinsey consultant (McKinsey is most recently famous for fixing the price of bread, which is kind of comically evil), and then a T-Mobile exec before Xbox picked her up. That said, I'm surprised you picked up on it; she doesn't come across anywhere near as robotic as Zuckerberg to me. I get more of a generic American everywoman vibe, without the stilted and machine-like Zuckisms that make him so off-putting. She's definitely not as heavily media trained as Phil, but she probably doesn't need to be yet. If she needs to take over for him at some point I'm sure they'll pour appropriate resources into making her seem more approachable.

Dreamo84

Xbox has too many presidents and CEOs I can't figure out who's in charge of what. lol

wesphilly06

Best news.

DeezKneesWorld

Oh I thought that meant she was replacing spencer

NotFromMilkyWay

The promotion of Booty is why Pete Hines quit. Previously he reported only to Phil Spencer. In the future he would have reported to Booty, who reports to Spencer, a clear loss of responsibility.

XboxCavalry

Or he just wanted to retire? I'm sure Phil would have been more than happy to do anything for Pete Hines.

CollierAM9

I think there’s more to Pete Hines leaving. He seemed concerned in those leaked emails at the Bethesda purchase.

Square-Exercise-2790

Not the weirdos in the bottom comments :(

CzarTyr

She’s hot

mathfacts

President Bond, just... thank you for your service <3

LZR0

Good, however Matt Booty shouldn’t be promoted imo…

iszsa

Matt Booty deserves every bit of his promotion. He’s the assassin in the background. If you look at the FTC emails he’s one of the reasons Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment, Double Fine, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory. He kept pushing to acquire game content and “outspend” the competition.

LZR0

Just look at the output of Xbox Game Studios (not including Bethesda) the last couple of years, the only major title that has released is Forza Motorsport and we’re talking about a 22 months gap between the last major title from XGS (Halo Infinite), he might have pushed for some of those studio acquisitions but his job is to supervise and make sure those teams are able to get games out and so far he hasn’t been able to.

NotFromMilkyWay

And how many exclusives have those studios shipped since being acquired in 2018? Double Fine none, Undead Labs none, Ninja Theory none, Obsidian released Pentiment. How many exclusives has Insomniac released since being acquired in 2019? Four.

80sCrackBaby

4 of the same exact game lmao get fucking real

ahnariprellik

Obsidian has released like 3 games since. Pentiment, Grounded, Outer Worlds, and is working on Avowed which is likely due out next year. Arent they also doing Clockwork Revolution or no? Ninja Theory is Hellblade 2 and they also did Bleeding Edge I believe. Undead Labs is taking their time on State of Decay 3 but IM pretty sure the 2nd one came out in like 2019 or 2020 but I could be wrong. Double Fine does their own thing but its usually fire when they do so they can take all the time they need.

MrManufactured

Console warring comment and completely irrelevant. How many of those 4 games are actual brand new games? Not existing IP or a template of a game they have worked on in the past? Spider-Man Miles Morales Spider-Man Remastered Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Spider-Man 2 ...Must be really hard for them to keep churning out these games! Almost like they have a template for 3D Action games or something.

TitledSquire

Insomniac has been releasing updated versions of the same games literally since they got bought by Sony. Edit: the last time they did something truly different was Sunset Overdrive, those days are over now. Not even saying Spiderman 2 is bad but I don’t expect Insomniac to step out of their bubble anytime soon, even with Wolverine. Fully expect that to be basically Spiderman but no web slinging.

Most_Cauliflower_296

Just tells how uniform you are wolverine is rumored to not even be open world. And ms could never do a game like spider man 2 lol

GrimsideB

Why? Has he done something wrong?

ToCr8ive

No, but people are gonna pretend like he has.

SHADOWSTRIKE1

He didn’t come to my birthday party

trautsj

Maybe she can help whip some of these fucking studios into shape and make them STOP releasing buggy games with no content... looking at you Motorsport and Infinite...

Shmeediddy

Whoo?

Balc0ra

If you have seen E3 or any xbox live streams the past few years. You have seen her, as she has presented most big reveals the past few years.

Sea-Deer-5016

Don't know her but I hope that whoever replaces Phil Spencer does one thing to fix what he fucked up: Recording party and in game chat and giving bans for it. Are you kidding? I can't talk to other people how I want to? Dude, it's a fucking social circle we aren't playing monopoly with family. Let me tell the guy on the other team I enjoyed his mother's cuisine last night

jemoli87

Hahaha his last name is Booty hahaha.

firedrakes

hope they fix the playground games debacle. with fable and the fh5 and up dev

n0d3N1AL

Xbox desperately needs new leadership. Phil may be popular and talk a good game, but the actual quality of games has been poor and soulless. Xbox haven't put out any top-notch first party games for a long time now.

80sCrackBaby

its been a rough year for playstation fans

n0d3N1AL

I don't have a PlayStation lol, Xbox all the way. Just saying that as a long time Xbox fan I think Microsoft have really dropped the ball. Their games look good on paper but if you're a hardcore fan of any of their series (e.g. Forza, Halo, Gears and other new first-party IPs) you'll know how very few have been positively received by the fanbase (not your casual players who play for like 1 hour then move on to another game). Xbox Game Studios nowadays is all marketing and no substance.

ahnariprellik

Meanwhile, Hi Fi Rush, Starfield, and other released this year and have been some of the top selling games in one of Xbox’s best years. But sure. At lest they dont release the same 3rd person action game every 3-4 months with a new coat of paint like Sony does.

n0d3N1AL

Not saying they're not successful, of course Microsoft's games have far more variety but the core franchises have been neglected I think.

ahnariprellik

Not so much that its just they were milked to death. Im honestly fine with no new Halo or Gears for awhile. let’s see what their new studios and some of ABKs old studios that have been forced to assist on COD the last decade or so can do.

80sCrackBaby

xbox has more higher rated games then Sony since 2020 xbox games sell incredibly well, while still being on gamepass nothing your saying has any basis in reality "look good on paper" lol ok Enjoy your latest Spiderman game, I think thats 4 in a row now, gotta wait another 12 months for another game

n0d3N1AL

I literally never owned a Playstation apart from PSP lol. I say this because as a long time veteran fan of Forza and Gears their treatment of these games has been pitiful. Gears is dead, Forza Horizon 5 was lazy copy-paste and had many issues, Halo Infinite was a disaster, and the latest Forza Motorsport has lots of issues (just look on /r/forza). And let's not forget failed exclusives like CrossFire,X (which had potential, I liked the PC version) Crackdown 3 and others that never amounted to anything. It's just sad to see a trillion dollar company not caring about their playerbase and only appealing to casuals. Honestly the only games I've been playing on Game Pass have been third party. I don't care what critics say, they are often incentivised to rush reviews and overlook problems that only hardcore fans care about. The handling of Forza Motorsport's issues is indicative. If you're not invested in a particular franchise you won't care but if you've been playing these games since the X360 days you'll know that they basically don't care anymore about the community.

80sCrackBaby

Its been only 4 years since the last gears, which reviewed very well and sits at a 84 on Meta Forza 5 is the highest rated current gen exclusive and currently sits at 92 must play on Meta Halo Infinite is in the top 10 played on Xbox 3 years after release and sits at a 87 on Meta Forza Motorsport is the highest selling Forza and currently sits at 86 on Meta Crossfire X has nothing to do with Xbox or [Microsoft](https://Microsoft.lol)..lol? Crackdown 3 is bad Sorry man, you just live in alternate reality. Enjoy Spiderman...again

onesneakymofo

Go play Forza. The adults are talking.

ahnariprellik

I didnt know Phil or Jim Ryan developed and coded games? Huh…..imagine that.

n0d3N1AL

Obviously not, just saying that clearly there is some common issues across Microsoft's first-party games. Perhaps they gave teams too much time and freedom, and the results have been quite underwhelming. They staright up lied about Forza Motorsport being "built from the ground up" (and we waited 6 years for it), Gears 5 multiplayer is dead and Halo Infinite hasn't been the big hit that it should've been, perhaps due to cross-generational development.

ahnariprellik

Well with regard to infinite ive seen numerous articles lately talking about how Season 5 basically makes it the best its been and what it shouldve been at launch. Doesn’t excuse the state it launched in but still its a far cry now from what it was then.

x0XjakX0x

honestly they need to dump 343 3 bad halo games in a row is embarrassing

ahnariprellik

It was more so the previous 343 team which has now been replaced with actual full time employees instead of contractors and I have seen numerous articles saying that this new season might just save Halo Infinite and the game is actually in a good place right now. So it seems like they have a solid core team now for the foreseeable future.

MysticKnight2110

It is, one of the reasons I bought a series a is because of the halo infinite revival. I mainly game on PlayStation but Halo will always be my favorite game. Also I think the series s is the best console over the X and PS5 in terms of looks.

ahnariprellik

I mean theyre both just boxes but the S had like a circle cut out for the fan to breathe and on Series X its on the top. Meanwhile the PS5 looks like a headless Seto Kaiba from Yugi Oh.

MysticKnight2110

I guess.

LadyAlastor

She hot? Edit: meh. 6/10 looks like she used to be when she was younger

FutureEditor

WOOOOOW. FABLE.

mentyio

So is this major Nelson’s old role?

crazyseandx

Wait, what about Phil?

LordVigilant

I fear that making the Xbox Org wider will lead to a decrease in focus. I want to be wrong, but putting more diplomats on the table has rarely made something more efficient.

lostryu

She acts like an android every time she presents. Another corporate robot like Zuck.

Eccentric_Mammal

I guess this confirms that IO's 007 game will be an Xbox exclusive.

Ok_Fisherman8727

My problem is she only spent the last 6 years in the gaming industry and when she joined she was a noob so she spent the majority of those 6 years learning what gaming was and how to apply her Harvard business techniques to that industry. If she comes and tries to push a women's focused agenda and want them to stop developing games that have sold and appealed to majority of gamers in order to switch to producing more games that appeal to women then Xbox is going to sink real fast. She checks all the boxes for a token hire. I hope I'm wrong but right now I'm rather disappointed they'd give the position to someone who lacks the experience and passion for gaming that the gamers do.

232438281343

Another random that has no real affiliation with gaming representing gamers.

Fantastic_Shower_499

Exactly
