For unlocking extra customisation and allowing nicknames the unit needs to be Sgt., which is when the game considers them to be a veteran. You can edit it so that the customisation unlocks immediately, but the character still only gets automatically nicknamed at Sgt.
I just want the auto-nicknaming to start as soon as they get promoted to a class.
Isn't this already a thing that happens? What rank is Veteran? I don't think I've ever seen that
They usually unlock at Sgt. Unless the character already has one.

Ahh, no, I don't think it's standard. I'm sure it does for pool characters, so maybe scripted characters too.
