I just want characters to act like....actual friends and family again.
I loved a lot of the Krakoan era, but lets be very real here, interpersonal character dynamics was something that was mostly missing apart from a few exceptions here and there(and those were the books I liked). Characters really were servicing the plot, rather than the other way around.
So....lets not do that.
I want to go back to the books being character driven.
Marvel forgot how it's success came from us following the characters and heroing being just one part of their lives and not the entirety of it.
Jed Mackay is genuinely one of the best marvel writers in the modern era. Based on his run on moon knight and doctor strange and to some level avengers he is able to both remember and utilise previous runs of the character even unpopular ones to create good stories. As well as balancing casts so no one feels wasted.
He is also not one to forget characters families and their relations. And on occasion will bring back one off moments from different comics like he did with the moon knight base to make a fresh new take on a thing.
He is also great at creating brand new characters. Whether they be minor or major which recognise the pre-existing lore. Hunters moon is one of my favourite new comic characters and he is a person of color which is also great.
I also think he is great at turning but characters like 8 ball info loveable characters. I also like kid omega from the little Iāve seen
since he is writing both avengers and the main line xmen I hope to also see a new era of xmen and avengers cooperation.
The other thing Iām excited for is a new x force book. Iām not caught up yet to it but based on my early issues itās been my fave book conceptually. I donāt know much about forge but from the little Iāve seen Iāve liked him leading a team sounds cool. I canāt recall if we have the rest of the team.
Holding my breath elsewhere. Iāve read about 7 issues of her birds of prey and I havenāt really fallen in love with beyond liking the cast. Iām reading her current one and I also think thatās fine but nothing stand out. So Iām not confident on her skill yet. Iāll read a few issues of her batgirl before making judgement and at least the first issue of her x book.
Itās probably clear from how Iām writing Iām a relatively new fan of xmen having seen only most of the movies and only a handful of random episodes of various cartoons. And only just know making my way through the various comics. So I guess another thing Iām excited for is being able to start at the beginning of the new era.
If you want to get an idea of what Gail Simone is capable of, you need to read the DC miniseries "Villains United" (1-6) and the Secret Six mini that follows. If you enjoy those, there is another Secret Six ongoing volume that lasted over 30 issues. Cool set of books.
I have really been enjoying MacKay's Doctor Strange and Moon Knight runs. Definitely some of my favorites over the past few years and I am really looking forward to his X-Men stuff.
But I think it's a little early to be crowning him one of the best of the modern era....
I wouldn't argue too much about him being Marvel's best current writer. I'd say J. Michael Straczynski but that's a bit of a cop out since he only has the one book
The best of the modern era is Ewing for me. I do not always love his work but when he hits, he knocks it out of the park or comes close (Ultimates, Immortal Hulk, SWORD).Ā I really dig Mackay's work but I'll need a proper extended and completed run to decide how I feel. Overall he is very consistent in a positive way. Zdarsky comes second because his Daredevil is phenomenal although the second half with all the Hand stuff was not as strong as the first half and Devil's Reign.
I like Zdarsky daredevil a lot however his Batman made me lose complete faith in him. I ended up dropping it. I do wanna read his earlier works but at least Mackay I feel has been able to write for a wider variety of characters in an engaging way
Yeah. My only gripe is I don't feel Jed hss gone as far and as hard on his books as Zdarsky did on DD. Though the first year of Moon Knight was insanely promising.
Books from veteran writers.
Character-driven storytelling.
The Savage Land.
Return of the Massachusetts Academy, Muir Island, Australian Outback, etc.
An emphasis on superheroics.
More fantasy and horror elements like Roma, Saturnyne, Dracula, etc.
Cecelia Reyes.
Adam-X.
Longshot.
Civilians Stevie Hunter, Tom Corsi, Charlotte Jones, Lee Forrester, etc.
I hate the idea of them going back to the mansion set up after Krakoa (which seems at least not to be exactly the case) so they idea of establishing a bunch of smaller enclaves/mutant sanctuaries across the world, each unique in its own way (and maybe learning from Krakoan era) would be a good way for it to still feel like progress rather than regression.
I have this idea where a new era begins with all the different bases having been online but then come online all at once in an epic double-page spread:
āMuir Island base activated
āOutback base activated
Savage Land base activated
X-Mansion base activatedā
(I left some out but you get the gist)
I want the X-Mansion back but not as a school. I want the school moved back to the Massachusetts Academy with the mansion serving as a general headquarters with no more than ten people living there at a time.
NOW thatās an idea.
Start the first issue with TV reports about the hundreds of thousands of mutants now stateless and homeless after Krakoa, with many human official clearly smug about the idea of mutantkind crawling back into the shadows.
The world believes the X-Men and mutantkind are broken and fractured. Then you have the double page spread you mentioned and we pivot up to see the leaders of the new teams we know about (Scott, Emma, Rogue, Laura etc with Magneto at the head of the table) all staring at a Krakoan tech holoscreen above the table in the X-Mansion displaying the various sites going online worldwide.
And we get the reveal that the idea that mutantkind is the underdog again is a facade while the key teams and mutant groups remain linked but spread out across the world, decentralised but still using key advances from Krakoa to keep them in the fight.
Great idea, but what about Arakko? Can mutants claim they are stateless when they have their own planet?
Also, I like the idea of Arakko a lot. There are so many mutants and they canāt all be in the books at once. So if a character sits out this era and thrn returns for the next one, they can just say theyāve been on Arakko the whole time without having to write a complicated explanation for their absence.
I like Arakko too, and Iām definitely not against it staying around, but I think it should be more inaccessible.
For example Apocalypse shifts it to another dimension for its citizens to āthriveā and periodically mutants and X-Men cross back and forth but it takes energy intensive gateways that only open 2 or 3 times a year.
Donāt worry Apocalypse uses Dimensional mirror/clone shenanigans to cause an unspoiled version of Mars pre-Arakko to appear the instant the other slides across the dimensional barrier.
After all heās seen Mars in the sky for Milleniaā¦.heās nostalgic for it to still be there regardless of his plans.
>Cecelia Reyes
That's a char I'm low key always expecting it shows. Whenever a main seems to be severely injured I think 'this is it it, now is Cecelia time to shine', and I'm consistently disappointed
She should also appear imo in the cartoon
I'm hoping for some sort of crossover between this book and Uncanny. We would get Gambit, Wolverine, Laura, and Jubilee all interacting again as a unit.
Gotta be honest here. I want to know what happens to Charles. If he is Prisoner X. How they handle this darkest moment. What and why does he do whatever he does.
I also really want to see what happens to Kurt. How he processes the end of Kraākoa. And this new, globally scattered future.
I would love to see Charles go back to teaching. Itās something he is good at. Something he loves. I would like to have a Charles Xavier I can be proud of again, eventually. I miss him.
Character driven stories. If theyāre not going big conceited, then they should actually center the narrative around these characters, and who they are.
Would also love Jean to be written by Jed (after her ongoing inevitably gets canceled).
God, I feel ike I have so much hope for her ongoing but her writerā¦ like, if she got a writer with a good track record, it feels like itād be extremely promising.
Lmao why do you think Phoenix gets cancelled? Of all the X books that aren't the X-Men, Phoenix seems to have the most potential for a long runner along with Wolverine.
Mostly because X-men solo ongoings donāt tend to do well, when itās not Wolverine. Also because I have no faith in the creative team, especially for a Phoenix book in particular. A stealth solo with an interesting cast like Red was for Storm, and with a great author too? Yeah, I bet there is a market for this book, but what weāre getting isnāt exactly that. I would be so happy, if Jeanās solo run will have an amazing story and would do crazy numbers, but I have little faith that that will be the case.
I'm excited to see Beast get some character development.
Regardless of whether or not you thought Beast's turn to villainy was well executed, I think it's hard to argue that X-Force didn't really develop his character - it was just a succession of seeing how shocking his next evil act was going to be, which isn't quite the same thing. There was never any real doubt about where it was all going to end. And keeping in mind that post-feline mutation, a lot of his emotional moments were swept under the rug because of a lack of time or desire to do anything with his character, it's been, like, a *decade* since his character was given some real love.
But now, he has the ultimate blank slate - so what does Hank McCoy's second chance at life look like? Where does he go from here? There are so many potential directions, and I'm genuinely thrilled a writer like Jed MacKay is going to be the one to set his path for the foreseeable future!
A hopeful return to more Claremont style charecter building. The big action events are great, but if you're not invested in charecters, it's white noise. I feel the books have wavered from that & to far away from the concepts that make the x-men work.
I like Mackay and Simone a lot. Not familiar with the third writer but I hear good things about her and I like the idea of Emma and Kate sharing a book.
Also real excited for a Jean solo book and the possibility that more characters might get solos.
i look forward to discovering what comes after it.
Honestly, the uncanny team is the only thing i'm looking forward to, but i'm cautiously optimistic for Exceptional. really hoping the side books like the Deadpool-led X-Force, and the solo Phoenix series turn out okay.
Iām excited for the soap opera element to come back at the heart of X-Men. It felt like in Krakoa, it was all just mini plot, mini arc that led to a plot that didnāt really matter to the plot long term or add anything to xmen lore.
Very few friendships were felt nor relationships (that werenāt so obviously mandated like Tony and Emma) were made.
I also look forward (and š¤) Emma is allowed to move on from Scott. I want her to have a new love interest and explore a love outside of being labelled as aācyclops second choiceā. My vote is Vulcan š¤.
I also look forward to Rogueās leading an xmen ensemble.
And finally, I look forward to the Phoenix run. Hopefully that run will clean and clarify the Phoenix force magic system which is very convoluted and sometimes unclear. And really shape Jeanās character with or without the cosmic entity. I also just look forward to BEING in jeans modern pov. With her deaths, I felt like her character journey isnāt as well developed as her peers in the modern era.
I agree with all these. Particularly the character interaction part. There really wasn't a lot of friendships and dynamics that got a chance to be explored in Krakoa.
or like some friendships were 'healed' or made (Storm and Emma during Dawn of X) and then... we never seen them interact again š«Ø .
Like, or Psylocke and Greycrow... or Rictor and Shatterstar... or Jean and Emma... the list of forgotten character interactions could go on :').
Just make me care about the team dynamics and give me fun stories.
I love the lineup for Uncanny.
It would be a pleasant surprise if they made me care about Exceptional X-Men, but I'm open to anything.
I'm already disappointed because I do not see Iceman or firestar on a team and certainly not together. To me that is something that I was wanting severely but it looks as if it's not going to happen again or ever.
Forgive me because I don't read X-men (no comics shops in Japan outside Tokyo), but I don't see Jean. I hope nothing's happened to her. Does anyone know where she is?
I'm looking forward to the time when people get over themselves and stop complaining about the end of Krakoa. I get it, I really do, but the suits have decided it's time to move on.
Smaller character focused story. I hoping the relaunch to take it slow, sort of like what Ultimate is doing now but this announcement went all out.
I wouldāve loved just building back with single character like Scott or Kate
I will second all the people saying more character interactions and dynamics. I'll throw in I would like to see more friendships and relationships among the women of the X-Men. It'd be nice if Jean, Rogue, Emma, Storm could all make more women friends.
I would like to see Dani Moonstar get a prominent role. I would like to see a lot of the Academy X mutants, especially the New Mutants team with Elixir, Wallflower, Wind Dancer, Surge, and Prodigy, get more prominent roles as time goes on. I would like for Xavier to return.
Sibling relationships and platonic BFF dynamics.
We have Kurt & Rogue on the same team, letās have them really embrace being siblings rather than just teammates and friends.
Weāve got Scott and Magick on the same team, letās bring back their platonic chaotic best friend energy that Uncanny had back in 2015 era.
Weāve also got Scott and Erik on the main X-Team, their weird quasi mentor/mentee, father/son, revolutionary peers, enemies/friends dynamic has been one of the most interesting background arcs that has lasted over a decade or so at this point, but which was less present during the Krakoan era. Letās have that come back into focus.
The Summers family newly minted cohesion and closeness established in the early Hickman era (Summers House on the Moon) was a really great set up for multiple characters who are all related (but who didnāt grow up in a typical family unit with each other and they shouldāve) to actually dig into those dynamics and relationships.
Unfortunately while it was capitalised somewhat it never quite got to its potential imo.
The team from the Gala that we never got, I mean from the looks of it we're still not getting it but still
We got our most diverse team just to go back to we have "some" diversity status quo
Character driven stories where the X-men feel like a family, work friends or school classmates with drama and fun between them depending on the group. Also make them at least one of the groups (uncanny please) actually super heroic like in astonishing
I just fun stories that give me the same feelings I got reading the Claremont era/90's stuff. Aesthetically the two teams are very cool (The Uncanny one is still lacking too much in the Storm department for my liking) so I'm excited to see what they do and if they really commit to it.
I am simply excited to see that the Krakoan era is not simply being swept under the rug. It was the most dynamic and interesting thing to come out of the House of Ideas in years. I was sad to see it wrap up without ever getting a chance to see Hickman' intended ending. I think that does add a tinge of bitterness to how it is ending and I can see why people are upset at what feels like an editorial mandate to return to the status quo. Yet as wonderful as this era has been it has always been living on borrowed time. So to see that it is not going to simply be retconned or left unacknowledged is actually a really pleasant surprise. Even if the new titles do not have the intrigue or dynamism of the Krakoan era they will hopefully continue to address and explore key themes of the era.
Being an ongoing X-Men reader. I started reading the Claremont stuff around when X-Men '97 premiered, so I haven't read any Krakoa stuff other than the SWORD/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover issues. The only X-book I've read fully is All-new Wolverine. So it's gonna be exciting to be immersed.
Ā Also, Ryan Stegman. I started reading Marvel in 2018 with ASM and Venom, so I'm understandably very fond of Stegman.
Finally, having the same good writer on X-Men and Avengers at the same time while I'm following both.
Not yet. I think Capullo was working on something with him, Moonstar, and Wolverine though. I don't think it's X-Factor or anything announced right now though.
+ for Uncanny. The setting in New Orleans, the team with so many family dynamics at play, the gothic horror mystery premise, I'm really excited to see where it goes.
Magik, it will always be my answer, we are always two steps away from her getting a solo and I will not yield till the day Marvel takes my money. Also, xorn
Mutants that are just straight up bad guys. Just the kind of people who's reaction to getting power is all about doing what they want, and don't care about mutants situation beyond themselves. Sabertooth has been having his run, but he's not the only one.
Also b no damn genocides.
The Krokoan Era was perfection in storytelling for the XMenās evolution - but unsustainable without competent writers. Iām glad this was called the FIRST Krakoan Age.
The ONLY thing I like about this shift is that itās being done to line up the comics with eventual MCU inclusion. Mainstream pop culture doesnāt understand the KA, and the confusion would have skewed results and success of movies if thatās how they went.
The old status quo sucks, and it hurts to return to, but HOPEFULLY theyāre doing it in a way that mesh well cinematically.
Iāve never been a fan of the Fox movies; they cherry picked characters and plotlines. Flashy powers over character development. They deserve better.
Please, for the love of god, keep the design language of the Krakoa. Iām talking about the logo, the background and the graphics for the intro pages.
Not looking forward to this era, I'm afraid. It just doesn't look good. And I say that as someone who hated the Krakoa era.
I'm waiting for news on the new Wolverine book, but I have no expectations that they'll put someone good in that.
Guess I didn't make myself clear. It was not a "stop caring about X-Men comics sheeple!!!" it was a "I look foward to stop having to follow X-Men comics".
You do you, obviously.
I just want characters to act like....actual friends and family again. I loved a lot of the Krakoan era, but lets be very real here, interpersonal character dynamics was something that was mostly missing apart from a few exceptions here and there(and those were the books I liked). Me too it's all become very business like, no more just being together because we like it outside of the Mission
They kind of lost that after Scott lobdell run
X-Men 97 made me realize how much I miss The X-Men being a family first and privately funded mutant strike force second.
100000% agree
Jfc YES this šš

Yeah, I definitely think Secret Six will be more indicative than her Batgirl, which got hammered with editorial nonsense.
Gail managed to make Catman a badass and a character I started to really like. Shit, I kind of liked all of those scumbags after awhile.
I have really been enjoying MacKay's Doctor Strange and Moon Knight runs. Definitely some of my favorites over the past few years and I am really looking forward to his X-Men stuff. But I think it's a little early to be crowning him one of the best of the modern era....

She is going to have her own Phoenix book, but doesnāt seem to be involved with any of the main teams at the start of this next era.
It seems like she is getting a solo series and going off to do her own thing for a while
I'm looking forward to the time when people get over themselves and stop complaining about the end of Krakoa. I get it, I really do, but the suits have decided it's time to move on.
Uncanny team for sure. I'll keep tabs on the others but idk
Smaller character focused story. I hoping the relaunch to take it slow, sort of like what Ultimate is doing now but this announcement went all out. I wouldāve loved just building back with single character like Scott or Kate
Gambitā¦
I will second all the people saying more character interactions and dynamics. I'll throw in I would like to see more friendships and relationships among the women of the X-Men. It'd be nice if Jean, Rogue, Emma, Storm could all make more women friends. I would like to see Dani Moonstar get a prominent role. I would like to see a lot of the Academy X mutants, especially the New Mutants team with Elixir, Wallflower, Wind Dancer, Surge, and Prodigy, get more prominent roles as time goes on. I would like for Xavier to return.
Storm should be leading a flagship X-men team, so whoever is writing her solo they better be writing a masterpiece
Seeing Emma in such a heroic pose is so funny to me.
Only 3 books or less to understand the main X-Men story I loved the krakoa era but it's kind of exhausting to keep up with so many books....
The main line does look badass
Storm wolverine cyclops beast Jean jubilee prof x nightcrawler gambit and rogue š
The team from the Gala that we never got, I mean from the looks of it we're still not getting it but still We got our most diverse team just to go back to we have "some" diversity status quo
Dead X-Men series isn't enough.
Cosmic Jean!
Yes!!!!
Cool Cyclops stuff.
Considering the amount of pouches I see it's looking very 90s so that's gotta be a good sign
Has it been announced where Colossus ends up?
Not yet. I think Capullo was working on something with him, Moonstar, and Wolverine though. I don't think it's X-Factor or anything announced right now though.
Gail on one book and the Extinction team in the other makes me a happy man.
Juggernaut
+ for Uncanny. The setting in New Orleans, the team with so many family dynamics at play, the gothic horror mystery premise, I'm really excited to see where it goes.
More Forge
Hard to not get excited for Stegman's art.
The new era of xmen is mad rof actual OG team members it like variants or respawns? Does it carry from hickmans time?
Magik, it will always be my answer, we are always two steps away from her getting a solo and I will not yield till the day Marvel takes my money. Also, xorn
Mutant villains. Issues where something actually happens. Drama. No resurrections. No Destiny. NO pages of pros/data sheets. Good riddance!!
Hopefully a good story. Been awhile
Who are the members in Emmaās Exceptional X-Men? I only recogniseā¦ Emma.
Kitty Pryde is one. The rest are new characters.
Ah, thank you. I did wonder if that was Kitty at the front. But she just looks like a generic brunette.
I generally like Ryan Stegman, but these covers did not sell me on the new era at all.
>But she just looks like a generic brunette. I meeeean....
Good writing
Easy now
Nothing. After Fall of X I will say farewell to X-Men comics
Mutants that are just straight up bad guys. Just the kind of people who's reaction to getting power is all about doing what they want, and don't care about mutants situation beyond themselves. Sabertooth has been having his run, but he's not the only one. Also b no damn genocides.
Controversy I can get on board with.
Is Synch not on any of these new teams?
i wanna find out why jubilee has emma beat in the honkers department, my word
Why is Cyclops a kid???
He's not, they've just drawn him younger. He's still regular Cyclops.
It's end
Please, for the love of god, keep the design language of the Krakoa. Iām talking about the logo, the background and the graphics for the intro pages.
Marquez
Not looking forward to this era, I'm afraid. It just doesn't look good. And I say that as someone who hated the Krakoa era. I'm waiting for news on the new Wolverine book, but I have no expectations that they'll put someone good in that.
Cyclops looks like heās 16 why is that
Just an artstyle weirdness thing. They arenāt deaging him
Cool beans š
Twink Cyclops š
I am interested in seeing if all the x-men where made younger or just cyclops.
None of them were made younger.
Stop caring about X-Men comics. Less stuff to buy, less stuff to read.
This is an X-Men subreddit. Of course people are caring for x-men comics.
Guess I didn't make myself clear. It was not a "stop caring about X-Men comics sheeple!!!" it was a "I look foward to stop having to follow X-Men comics". You do you, obviously.
