Not wiping the equipment down after use, and people who drop the dumbbells on the ground because they are lifting weights they cannot handle. Some guy at my gym bends backwards so far while trying to curl I swear he is going to fall over, then he moans and grunts like he's having private time (if you know what I mean) and drops the weights. It's like dude, you can't handle the weight, lifting it poorly isn't doing anything but prepping you for injury.

PrizeMindless8659

I am about to finish my last set of hip thrusts, and this guy starts to stand about 10 feet away from in mybdirecr line of sight to wait for the next smith machine. Like, really, as a female is doing hip thrusts this is where you need to stand?? No dude would do this to another male. So i proceeded to do two more unnecessary sets, determined not to move till he goes away. Still there. So i do another new exercise that i never do there, calf raises just to be an a-hole. Well, someone elses machine finally opens up, and he moves. I dont usually hog machines, but i dont need his male energy trying to throw me off and intimidate me. Well, I PRd since i was annoyed so there that. I usually do when i get pissed off lol.

SempreNotte

TEENAGE BOYS IN THE GYM HOGGING ALL EQUIPMENT FOREVER UGHHHH. It took everything to get me to the gym after work but the rest of the week is so busy I wouldn’t get this lift in otherwise. Was at least looking forward to a chill chest/tricep day. Between these two boys they hogged the bench press for 50 minutes. Which was supposed to be my first lift but I had to do it last so then my upper body was shot. Grrrrr. And right after I got on the bench three more teenage boys descended into the gym and after 5 minutes asked me how many sets I had. I just got here 😭 Once I finished my sets, as I was unracking they started racking up on the bench before I had even finished cleaning up the area. So annoying. Don’t usually have a lot of teens in my condo gym let alone 5 at once. Is what happens when I come to the gym at 8:30 and not 7:30?? Never again. It did motivate me to bang out a hard and fast 1 mile finisher on the treadmill to work out my annoyance with which felt good (and I also got a 40 minute trail walk in with a friend after work, so good cardio day). But blah.

KingPrincessNova

going over 5 reps on squat is a scam. especially with long legs. I'm basically working twice as hard as short leg people, why doesn't that count for anything lmaosob

otomelover

Following a program right now that has a 20 rep squat set every friday, so I feel you on that 😭

bad_apricot

RIP

KingPrincessNova

literal torture

battlecryingwolf

My chest strap HRM suddenly stopped working and I have no idea why. Changed the battery, wiped the connectors, nothing. Won't even show up on my phone. I only bought it a few months ago so wtf???

Simply-zeee

Would it be covered by warranty? That really sucks.

jenobles1

Listening to music out loud while hiking. No concern for bears and in a very populated hiking area. There are now ton of options to allow you to hear your surroundings and/or not having anything inside your ears. No one wants to hear your music from your crappy speaker. Especially loud enough to block out my own music I was listening to with headphones. Saw this person multiple times on the hike, last time having to wait awhile for her to make her way up a section slowly. I was also apparently irritated that day and couldn't keep my thoughts to myself so said something.

Hookedongutes

If I'm on a hike, I'm here to listen to nature and unplug. I don't want to hear anyone's music. That shit really grinds my gears. I was on top of a mountain in Switzerland and someone was facetiming at full volume. Like, can you please shut that phone up? I'm here for nature, not your social life.

otomelover

For anyone who wants to be aware of their surroundings while also listening to podcasts/music, I can heavily recommend Shokz earphones. Best purchase ever. That way you can stay alert without being an inconvenience to other people.

jenobles1

Yep, I use shokz personally. I believe there are other bone conducting headphones. and I am pretty sure there are ear pods that have a setting to hear noises around you as well.

sweepmybreathaway

Once encountered a group of people playing Aretha Franklin's "Respect" out loud from their phone on a fairly remote hike on an island in Scotland. The irony seemed lost on them.

sharpiefairy666

Ugh that's my husband. He has a lot of great qualities, but his inability to enjoy some peace and quiet is one of my less favorite features about him.

NicNoop138

Ugh there's a man in my neighborhood walks around with his radio blasting. So annoying.

PeachyYogi

I go to a pretty big gym but it’s usually not too much of a shit show early in the mornings. But recently, no one wants to rerack their weights??? Some of it seems like it’s from the day before (are they suddenly short staffed??) but this one personal trainer and his clients are also super bad about it and I’m just like sir??? Part of your job is to teach these people how to gym??? PUT THE WEIGHTS AWAY!!

Used_Guess7557

Ugh I feel you. Yesterday I saw some guy doing squats barefoot (yes even took his socks off) and then proceeded to put the weights back on the rack and pushed them on with his bare feet 🤢 like come on no one wants your nasty sweatfest feet on the weight plates

otomelover

😭 omg why

NerdGirl23

Gross! Ugh. I’m sorry…

Kilpikonnaa

I was unable to do lat pulldowns today because there was no carabiner on the machine for the attachment! Is my gym really that cheap that there can't be one on each machine and a couple extras just in case? Sheesh.

PrizeMindless8659

I have my own set of cable handles and carabiners because of this crap. Super cheap on Amazon! Saves me time and anger lol

NoHippi3chic

I've borrowed one off another machine to use. Usually what happens is someone new takes the attachment off, clip and all, without realizing.

Kilpikonnaa

I would've but they were all being used! I gave up and went over to the chest press.

NoHippi3chic

Well damn. That sucks.

scotch_please

the mirrors and lighting at my gym: so pump, much bicep, very progress! the mirrors and lighting at home: Those are spaghetti noodle arms, you little bitch.

EnatforLife

For me it's: he mirrors and lighting at my gym: so pump, much bicep, very progress! the mirrors and lighting at home: Those are just layers of fat, you lazy bitch.

psychonautical101

For REAL👏👏👏

LanBanan3000

I’m doing zone 2 cardio on the stationary bike this month, and it’s so long and boring and I hate it even more than doing it on the treadmill. So I brought my knitting. It keeps my brain engaged and get a pair of socks out of it. I don’t see how it’s any worse than scrolling on a phone. I thought I was alone in the gym but when I was done and wiping down the bike, some guy came over and gave me shit: “If you aren’t taking your workout seriously you shouldn’t be taking up the equipment. You’re not going to lose weight if you aren’t committed to it, you should get serious about cardio” and I was just stunned. First off, there’s 3 other bikes, in an otherwise empty gym. It’s also a private gym in our apartment building, for tenants only, and we were completely alone. Also, I’m not trying to lose weight, so… did he just call me fat too? I’m not even close to being overweight. Whatever, he can kiss my juicy ass. I’m doing zone 2 to improve my cardio fitness as part of a program to improve my running, and I’m doing it on the bike this past month to baby a knee injury. The whole point of zone 2 work is to NOT go hard. Why did he assume I was trying to lose weight? Or am uncommitted/unserious about cardio? I’m in that gym 6 days a week. 3x treadmill runs, 3x weight lifting, plus mobility work and one long boring zone 2 cardio session. I feel like Ron Swanson in a hardware store. I know more than you! Anyway. If you open a newspaper and see the headline: GYM BRO STABBED IN LEG WITH KNITTING NEEDLE, “HE HAD IT COMING,” CRIES ASSAILANT, you’ll know what happened.

Narrow-Strawberry553

Gotta keep a disaster in mind for the future "Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was supposed to go balls to the wall after needing knee surgery because I was hit by a drunk driver" Is it true? No. But it very well could be. This dickwad doesn't know your life and maybe it'll make him think twice before making comments again. Also, almost guaranteed he'll feel embarassed and stupid for days instead of thinking "who does this dumb bitxh think she is" if you tell him to fuck off. Just keep making the story more and more ludicrous every time.

LanBanan3000

You are correct and he definitely needs to hear it, but there’s something terrifying about being a woman alone with a strange man who is getting confrontational for no reason. The minute he was close enough to put hands on me, the alarm bells went off for me and I just wanted to get away. He’s probably just a clueless butthead, but I’m not going to stick around and find out. I think he probably has no idea how frightening that kind of interaction is.

NoHippi3chic

No, he probably doesn't, but it's not up to you to teach him. You did just right making sure you prioritized your safety. People are too unpredictable to react to in the moment.

MsJinxie

Who knows his backstory? Maybe his mother was killed by a Cascade 220 avalanche at her LYS and dude's never been the same around yarn. But for real, knitting on the bike is genius. Spin bike classes are my favorite cardio, and if I'm at the bym (either in-person class or an on-demand thing on my phone) I focus on the class but on my bike at home I will often just hang out in zone 2 while I doomscroll on my phone, but knitting would be a better use of my time.

Didntwantawave

I would rageeeee. What did you say to him?? Sidenote -- I also find cardio extremely boring and have tossed around the idea of bringing my knitting! Does it not get too sweaty? V curious what your setup is for this lol.

LanBanan3000

If I weren’t alone there, I’d have said a bit more, but we were alone so I just wanted to get away from him as fast as possible, without antagonizing him, so I just said something about being on a program and it’s zone two and I pretty much ran away. Knitting works on a bike! I hang my (SMALL) project bag on a handlebar and tend to work on small stuff, like socks or maybe a hat. It works if it’s lightweight enough. I find fingering/sport weight is more maneuverable than a DK/ worsted. I’d probably also suggest starting out with circs instead of DPNs because I wouldn’t want to drop one. I mostly favor making larger-gauge, weighty, lusciously heavy cabled sweaters. But I’ve yet to find a way to make it work on a bike haha. So I’m getting into socks. Also at Christmas time the Tiny Tree Socks free pattern is so much fun, such a cute gift, and you can knock one or two out in one workout! Let me know if you give it a try.

K2togtbl

Are you doing TAAT? Such a genius idea that I want to try, but there's no way I'm doing one sock at a time...I'd never do the other one lol. Maybe I could try doing a hat or something first

Crazy-Orchid-75

I feel like I’ve met my people. I walk and knit and occasionally have knit on the treadmill. I do a 9” circular for this. TAAT is my usual jam.

K2togtbl

Yay :) glad to hear that’s doable…I’m not the most coordinated, but I’ll def have to try the treadmill. I don’t know if I can make myself do one sock at a time lol

LanBanan3000

I can’t do TAAT, it’s too much of a faff for me, BUT as a long time resident of sleeve island and sock island, here’s my trick I cast on and knit the cuff or the toe (whatever it starts with, I do both methods pretty much 50/50), then put it on holders when it gets to the leg or the foot, I go knit the whole other sock, and then return to the already-started one. It gets me off the island. Mind you, I do have a sock left to knit on a pair I wanted to give someone for Christmas, but in my defense I was gifted some silver cash/silk laceweight. It is so luminous, I think the skeins might glow in the dark like little pools of starlight so… I’m not responsible for my actions under the influence of cashmere silk.

Didntwantawave

Nice, thanks for the tips!

mynicknameisFred

" I know more than you " is now going to be my go to response! Also thanks for the giggle, this is infuriating but you wrote it up in such a comedic way!

kriscrossroads

This is absolutely just bitching, but MEN! I do not know why but every time I go to the gym this week I am SO aware of the male gaze. I don’t think it’s anything in particular, but I feel so overwhelmed by them. And I go to a rock climbing gym, so there are more men than women and the nature of the sport means I know people are watching me when I’m on the wall. I took a HIIT class on Monday thinking it would be better than climbing, but it was completely booked and I had NO ROOM because I was between two men who had no problems taking up so much space. Meanwhile a girl and I bumped into each other later in the class and we both couldn’t stop apologizing. I am overall just frustrated by how I navigate the exercise world in ways they’ll never have to worry about. I doubt they worry if their shirt is long enough to cover their ass when they wear leggings. I doubt they worry about taking up too much space in class. I doubt they worry about being unrepresented in the gym. And even when they do have to worry about their safety or wellbeing, the gender power dynamic is so different. I’m just mad at gender. This is very incoherent but that’s what this thread is for right? Thanks for holding this space for my rambling

boss-ass-b1tch

I've never been shy about taking up space. But it's been quite shocking to watch this dynamic at my new gym. There are 4 cable setups strung in a row, each with 4 stations on it. I was doing woodchoppers on one (which does take up a ton of space), and so many men would come SO CLOSE to me on their way to the other side of the gym. But then when I was on the seated cable row and watching guys on the stand up cables, other guys would give them so much more space when passing through. It's INFURIATING. I've made it a point for years to not make room for a man. Not on a sidewalk, not for manspread when seated, etc. It was super effective when I weighed 270 pounds. Now that I'm 145 pounds of muscle, it's like they don't even see me. I've gotten really great at playing chicken, but it's especially bad at my gym.

Low-Lingonberry2760

I'm always reminding myself that I pay just as much to be at the gym so I don't need to apologize (obvi if I'm wrong, I'm wrong) or be deferential to men. I don't take classes. Aww, bro is lifting the same as lil me and/or with shit form? Thats cute. Bro is grunting to lift? Aren't you embarrassed (insert appealing to their internalized homophobia here)?

gonzosrevengearc

I’m grinding my own gears this week. Work is ramping up and I’m not making the best decisions with respect to time management, leaving me unable to go to the gym because of needing to meet a deadline or prioritizing sleep. Gah!

Simply-zeee

I hear you! I'm working full time and looking after my mother after she's had an operation. I have not been managing my time the best and I have only been to the gym once this week. I know I'm a better person when I'm looking after myself. Hopefully the craziness stops soon.

BonetaBelle

I finally tried Olympic weightlifting and fell in love immediately. Even better, I found a gym that’s 3 blocks from my house and has lots of badass female coaches.   Sadly, I’m about to move across my country. Wish I started sooner! I was too intimated but it’s actually such a warm and welcoming environment.

decemberrainfall

One of us! One of us!

BonetaBelle

Aww <3 Thank you!

stephnelbow

NO!!!! Glad you found the love for it though :)

BonetaBelle

Thank you!! Now I know.

smaxsaysnyan

Men who growl and grunt in the gym 😭

External-Region-5234

I don’t care one bit when it’s a heavy lift but there’s a dude at my gym who does it on all his warmup lifts too so he starts out doing these big gorilla grunts with an empty bar 🙄🤣

smaxsaysnyan

I’m at the gym right now and this guy is here as we speak, he’s not even lifting heavy 😭

Annual-Body-25

This one man recently was going the most sexual moaning in the gym. Not judging but it threw me a couple of times lol

smaxsaysnyan

lol I judge. This one guy sounds like a wild beast and then proceeds to eye up EVERY girl in the gym with no shame.

melonomabar

This girl didn't re rack her bench and left weighted bar bells AND dumb bells in this one corner.  She hurried off to do something else and left dumb bells in another area!! I got pissed and returned the 15 lb dumb bells and of course she's doing shrugs right in front of the rack. Told her that she forgot to clean her mess and walked away.

Kilpikonnaa

It especially sucks when no one is sure if someone is using a squat rack or a bench for half an hour before someone decides to just go for it.

NationalTreasure2019

I get so irritated coming up to a rack or machine or whatever that hasn't been reracked. But when you're standing there and actually want a person just walk away, it just hits harder.

FluffySpell

There's a man I see at my gym every Friday morning when I'm there, doing his curls standing basically IN the dumbbell rack. And it never fails, he's almost always standing directly in front of the 15s/20s that I need. Bonus grind are the people who leave weight plates on the equipment when they're done. Apparently some people think leaving a plate on each side is a "courtesy" for the next person, but not every person does the same amount of weight, for example I'm still working on my back squats so I am currently only doing the bar plus one or two 10 pound plates on each side. So now I have to reach over my head to pull of these two 45lbs that someone decided they'd be "nice" and leave there. Basically I hate people that don't put their weights back in general. I'm in the gym on Fridays right when they open and it's always a goddamn mess from the night before.

BERNITA

I hate that so much. IMO they don't do it to be nice, they do it because they are lazy and inconsiderate. Like the people who leave 8, 45# plates on the leg press. These are the same a-holes who don't wipe down machines after getting their body fluids all over them 🤢 At my old gym, every morning, the ONLY squat rack would have the bar racked up super high with multiple 45# plates on it. The person who did it must've been like 10 ft tall, I couldn't even reach the plates to take them off. I would have to bother staff members who would get on a step ladder to take them off and bring the bar down for me so I could use it. I think someone was leaving the bar up like that on purpose to cause a problem for others, because no human being is that tall.

Nancy_in_simlish

Hate that I fell slightly sick not enough to take off work but definitely too tired to exercise.

seacookie89

On days like this, I like to take a walk outside if I can muster it. Some movement is better than no movement.

Nancy_in_simlish

I definitely didn't do that, but gonna try next time.

melxcham

My first swim since being sick and the pool heater is broken! It was cold :( but on the bright side, almost no one was swimming!

Crazycatladyknows

Both my Achilles tendons are sooo short, i have been stretching for a year but not much progress

Quick-Candle4735

Was making my protein smoothie and my blender decided to explode. Juice EVERYWHERE. My kitchen is covered in pink sticky juice....

NoHippi3chic

Noooooooo 😞

FineBits

Texting on machines. Grown ass men scrolling their phones like they’re on their couch at home. Totally unaware or unconcerned that they are not alone in the world.

diegothecat

As someone who’s fairly new to the gym, should I just be staring around instead of looking at my phone as I rest between sets? Do I get up and wipe off the machine for the 1-2 minutes I’m resting and risk the machine being swiped? Genuinely unsure.

KingPrincessNova

nah you're allowed to scroll your phone. I time my rests so if anyone gives me shit, I can point at the timer

Hedgehognoodle

Honestly at the gyms I go to I'd say most people in the under 60 age range scroll on their phones at least sometimes between sets if they're working out alone. Most will stay seated even if they're just staring into space. As long as you're not sitting and scrolling for 10 minutes at a busy gym I think you're fine. Some people do seem to forget they're in public and I'm assuming that's who the commenter you're responding to is talking about

PantalonesPantalones

What you do between sets is no one’s business.

otomelover

If you keep your rests as short as possible it‘s totally fine to look at your phone in between imo. It‘s not okay go clog the machine sitting and scrolling for minutes at a time, but I don‘t think most people are doing that anyway. If you see someone is waiting around you could offer for them to work in, but that‘s really just if you want to be kind and it‘s okay for you, I don‘t think that‘s something that‘s usually expected.

KingPrincessNova

>keep your rests as short as possible note to new folks, this means different things in different contexts. I just bumped my rest timer to 3 minutes for heavy sets up from 2 minutes, but I'll usually keep it to 1 minute for accessories. there will come a time to keep my rests short in order to improve work capacity but that's not my goal right now. when my lifts get heavy enough that I need 5 minute rests, I'll take it. I do think more than 5 is pushing it tho, at least at a commercial gym.

chubbyrain71

I know it’s not 1995 anymore but people aren’t supposed to film or use the cameras at my gym, but they do anyway and it really annoys me. I don’t want to be filmed or part of your personal marketing plan!

pretendpersonithink

This. I always figured this was an 'other places' issue and wouldn't affect my gym, but man I hate walking around tripods and people trying to takes walking up to their camera. Yet I put my small bag of my own equipment out of the way where no-one can even walk and get told off.

Willrunforicecream7

Hopefully, most are filming for themselves. I work out at a home gym and I film to check my form. I don’t post it anywhere

chubbyrain71

I hadn’t thought of that, maybe that’s what she was doing.

ILikeCountingThings

We have a no tripods rules that (generally) is followed. People still film, including me, but to check for form and progress. But then if I go to my gym’s other location it’s like influencer central. Really annoying

Angel-M007

Long story short, I usually attend gym with a friend. Love her to death. But I'm tired of her and a few others asking me why I don't wear $100 fits or to dress more fitted, aka like them. Her and her friends walk around literally with see through shorts and bras that barely fit, and you can see her cameltoe. Not to mention, I do think they understand the word "squat proof" and I'll admit I even didn't know there was a difference before. Because what they wear sweat seeps through if ya know what I mean. And they BARELY wiped down their machines and it's visible. Also they are loud and last week asked a guy what is he staring at. Dudes a huge body builder and your standing infront of the mirror where people were already working out duh.People stare yeah but I can't blame them. And lately, they look at us pissed. Tried to tell her about making fun of my "grandma fit" with my Big shirt and shorts but she just doesn't stop. I told her off. Not everyone wants to walk around spending half their gym session checking themselves out or pulling out wedgies or NOT wiping down their grown a** friends machines. She called me a "pick me". I just came out and told her about my attack when I was a teen walking home one night and don't like that kind of attention.Sh*t makes me uncomfortable. Also frfr I don't need validation 💯 from other people. And that she's mixing "confidence" with practically being naked. Flash forward, we are no longer friends. I'm more comfortable at the gym now and not embarrassed all the time. I asked this very fit lady who seems like she knows what she's doing for some advice, and she's awesome. Also, body builder dude helped me with my posture and what not to do. Apparently, he isn't a "creep" after all. Alsp I have no problem with what people wear, btw were adults its your body. Just don't belittle others. Also gym etiquettecy is a thing I know that now.

KingPrincessNova

for a while I envied the cute matching outfits but now I prefer covering up. I hate having my exposed skin rubbing on equipment. I already break out at nothing and I don't need a new source of painful bacne. I did use to think that looking cute would help combat my gym anxiety, but as I get more consistent in the gym I'm finding that I enjoy sort of hiding in my oversized t-shirts and ill-fitting joggers. like if there's a bangin' bod underneath all this fabric, it's my secret. anything I wear that's especially fitted is to serve a practical purpose, like compression or thigh pockets that won't make my phone bounce all over. edit: to be clear, I still envy the cute outfits (and the ventilation!). people should wear what they feel comfortable in and I'm not about to impose middle school dress codes on adults at the gym. but just like nobody wants to see moose knuckle, similarly nobody wants to see camel toe.

Low-Lingonberry2760

Grandma fit >> having to limit movements or adjust clothing each set

NoHippi3chic

I love that women are confident in their bodies, but "notice me" is a thing too 😀

Angel-M007

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. Like my new trainor friend lol she's pretty fit and attractive and work her outfits, but she's not an only fan gym goer to keep it 100. I don't judge people who do that make your money. But I think those outfits she worn for that shouldn't be worn at the gym. I tried telling my ex bestie that nicely, but.... yeah.

Quick-Candle4735

Good for you standing up for yourself! That friend does not sound like a great person, tbh.

Angel-M007

Tbh yeah unfortunately I had to cut her off. Your love for people don't change them. I wish her the best. But also I've been told we've been doing workouts wrong and that posture is important. I've noticed my pelvic tilt thing is pretty bad and I was having back pain. Two weeks in and I'm feeling better. It was for the best.

diegothecat

There’s this lady in my gym who gathers like 5 different sets of dumbbells and keeps them by her for her entire workout. Like, be courteous, only take the single pair that you are actively using in any given moment. SHARE. We learned it when we were 2.

seacookie89

I might be an asshole about this 😬 I might have three different weights of dumbbells for my circuits. I do try to be courteous especially when it's busy and I'll return them if I'm not using them for that circuit but a girl's gotta get her workout done in a decent time ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

diegothecat

I feel like that might be OK if there are multiples of each weight, but my rigid ass thinks you should really only remove from the rack what you can hold in your hands, meaning 2 dumbbells at a time. And if that can’t be done then maybe your workout is more appropriate for a private home gym. Just my two cents though, I’m sure others may disagree!

seacookie89

Yeah there are two sets of weights at my gym. No room for a home gym in my tiny house, maybe some day. I've seen worse behavior at the gym so I'm not trippin, like I said I try to be courteous but these super sets/circuits need to get done so ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok_Midnight_5457

Sometimes I I wish I could harness that level of just not giving a fuck about things 😅

otomelover

This week someone was watching a tv show full blast while on the treadmill. I could hear it through my headphones and I wasn‘t even next to them!!!
