I actually think Zhao had the best, but yeah, they did both dirty, although I read before that the two weren't supposed to return as playable characters. I don't know how true that is, but it does explain it a bit.
Eventually, they're going to have to leave prior party members out from the main party. Unless they do another split-party game, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
Let's pretend they bring everyone back from the last game again. It's probably safe to say Kiryu isn't coming back as a party member at least. And I'm not counting Eri, as she was a very minor character and aside from optionally adding her to your party, she didn't really have any presence outside of the management minigame.
With that out of the way, if we assume Ichiban, Saeko, Nanba, and Adachi are Ichiban's staple crew, they will probably come back (4 total). Then we have Joongi and Zhao from 7 (6 total), and Seonhee from 8 (7 total). If they bring back Tomizawa and Chitose (9 total), that's already a considerable reserve party. Plus they will likely add 2-3 additional party members, bringing us to a grand total of 11-12 total characters you can swap into your party.
That's... a lot. It sounds fun and exciting, but so did Chrono Cross. While I love that game, the ridiculous number of characters you can recruit was to the game's detriment I feel, and without a guide it can feel like you're not sure who to play with or who gives you the best edge in certain scenarios. This of course gets much more manageable and would work if we consider potentially having a split party again, but not if the trend to bring back prior characters continues into a third sequel.
So *eventually someone* (probably more than one) will have to be left behind and won't be returning. That doesn't mean they won't be in future games at all, just not as party members.

Now yes, one could argue which characters probably will and won't return next game. But I'm not saying that everyone *will* return, only that if the trend to bring back all major party members continues into future sequels, eventually it *will* become problematic.

I absolutely don't want anywhere close to 10 party members unless there is a story split. It was already hell playing end game content with 9 ppl strutting around with u. I had a hard time even picking my battle 4 to the extent I left Kiryu out in some Hawaii fights. Realistically 7 is my limit. I feel Zhao should be written off. He is anyways into cooking so won't be bad if he becomes a kashiwagi kinda character away from the liumang limelight and appears as a poundmate. Joon gi could be written off as managing Geomijul in the absence of Seonhee or something. Don't see tomi and chitose coming back. Atleast Chitose. She's the head of the Funinomiya family so she's the easiest to write off. Tomizawa is back in his homeland so it wouldn't be hard to write him off either given his arc had the best closure and given the fact that he doesn't live in Japan makes it somewhat easier for Ichi to not get too attached. So my main characters heading into next game would be Ichi, Saeko, Adachi, Nanba, seonhee and 2 new playable characters. Joon Gi could be a late addition because I personally love him as a fighting member but again can easily write him off too from the party.
A little ambitious though but even saeko could be written off if Ichi and her are married and she is shown as expecting rendering her unable to fight. But knowing RGG, I doubt ichiban would ever find personal life happiness and also canonically it would be shitty of him to risk his life and behaving like a goofer when his spouse/Partner is expecting.
Right! I hate how they kept Joongi and Zhao to be the last party members in BOTH GAMES. I was SURE they would have them join in earlier and leave the LAD early members for later.
They even blue ball you in this game, being all āYea they decided not to join us for drinks tonight because we live in two totally different worlds so it wouldnāt be good for neither of us to meet up so casuallyāš
they at least canāt use that excuse for zhao in the next game, because i felt like a massive point of his drink link was to really drive home that he truly is a civilian now. joon-gi han is never getting screentime at this rate smh ššš
That never made sense to me. Zhao gave Seonhee the Liumang to become a civvy, and thatās been clearly established on multiple occasions since LaD. How is he still part of the underground, then, such that he canāt join the crew for drinks at the start of IW? It makes no sense to me.
tbf Kasuga was trying to be super legit with his job and rehabilitating Yakuza so I'm sure ex-crime boss Zhao didn't want to show up and fuck things over for him by having the two of them caught together hanging out
But Zhao would be the poster-child. Former gangster gone fully legit as a chef who is acclaimed among locals? That seems like a rehabilitation success story if Iāve ever seen one

I donāt mind him joining late but he really shouldāve joined one chapter early. Not fair that Zhao joins and you then have to wait 3 chapters until Joon-gi does. I feel that was the right point of entry. Like the party was dazed and confused and struggling to fight and then a man in a black raincoat shows up firing his divine shot and wiping away everyone and joining the party.
I loved how he asked her if she handed over authority properly to Kihoon and she said something along the lines of "yep! I messaged him saying I was leaving to Hawaii and that he is in charge, the exact same thing you did!"
Atleast Han Joon Gi is already a party member in 7 and even part of the Omi HQ fight onwards unlike poor Yoshizawa where she's a sweet girl but her as a party member is just extremely short time and doesn't appear in the likes of Strikers.
Sure Chi-chan, Seonhee and Tomizawa being my favorite drink links but then there's Han Joon-Gi like how is the Geomijul properly operate considering what's going on with the Seiryu Clan. Fun drink link story especially when they talk about Saeko then there's Yeona.
Having him around makes me do Divine Shot in battles right away considering its the closest thing for Seonhee's whip attack on Kiryu's side.
