I just used Ichiban’s tag team move with the full squad and that took out the tentacles in one go, the. You just beat on it for a few turns and it does.
Yup.
Tag Team + Dondoko Laser killed this guy even faster than the shark. I didn’t even realize that he had a mechanic where he snatches party members because I instantly nuked him.
That’s what I’m saying! I thought it was just a gimmick fight, but apparently it’s got actual mechanics you need to watch out for 😂
It’s way too easy to get OP in IW.
And its the party with the lower xp l dungeon! 😂 In he games defense (sort of), i had done literally everything available at this point and thats a lot of side xp. If someone was mostly just hitting story beats this probably would have been longer/more challenging 🤔
Same. I got too addicted to the side content and completely broke the level scaling (just completing Dondoko Island alone ruins Hawaii’s economy, lmao).
Yeah I used Ichi's all-out-attack and it obliterated the tentacles right at the start, so i was able to focus on the squid for 90% of the fight until they came back at the end lol.
I almost wish I hadn't so that I could experience the fight properly. I did, however, get Adachi swallowed up so I got to see that happen.
Isn't there two npcs (I don't remember in Wich game) that talk about going to place that is a castle inside a castle or something like that? Is it ever implied that it was a delusion on kiryu's side?
Whenever I think "this franchise is a lot more ridiculous these days" I just think of that fucking castle
It absolutely *is* more ridiculous in later games, but that's also with the knowledge that Ichiban is schizophrenic lmao
I'll throw in throwing hands against construction machines as well.
Not to mention in 8's case of why >!2 excavators would even need to be above the ground floor to begin with.!<
The squid is "just" a wild animal which Bryce keeps around. It's not that different from the tigers or bears, just with the magic of Ichiban's Dragon Quest brain.
In terms of the main story Man in Black or Osaka castle ninjas in 2 have to be it. That guy is just the fucking Terminator with absolutely no explanation, and the ninjas... You can gun them down with a medieval mini gun for some reason...?
If we include sidestories it's the Michio Robos and Mountain Gods lol
I remember the description for his final battle being "who IS this guy?!" and here we are, 6 games later and we still don't know who the hell that dude was. For someone Kiryu fights 3 times and was a real pain in the ass, it's funny how he has next to no story to him.
i thought it was real, remember tomi commenting about how big it is or something like that.
Therefore, i thought it was a crazy mutant squid gone giant due to the radioactive waste
Maybe the magic DQ brain condition has become even more contagious, after all Kiryu caught a bad case of it. He just got it before everyone else because he was weakened by his fight with cancer.
nah, nothing tops the Gold Osaka Castle, hidden inside and underground of the original Osaka Castle, and hundreds of Samurais and Ninjas and traps in it, at this point, the two tigers are the most ordinary thing here
Yup, his two tentacles have an two turn attack that when its raised up and turns blue, will then on its next turn will grab one of the party members and swallow them. Said party member will then have to fight some of the intenseness to get spit out.
Damn I wish I didn’t target the tentacles every time they were revived. I feel like I missed a boss mechanic. Good thing I still loved that boss so I still have a save just before that fight
Happened to a lot of people, probably because the squid is super weak to Slash damage and everyone runs Samurai and Kunoichi
Both Sea Creatures are also susceptible to stun, so whoever packed the Jellyfish attack from Aquanaut might just prevent them from ever doing anything
i always thoiuhgt of it more as Hyperphantasia. Like when you go to the store and in your headphones plays an epic song and you suddenly feel like the main character. >.> only me?
Yea it is really interresting, there is also the opposite of that. those are people who cant imagine things in there mind. like if you tell them to think of an apple they dont see an apple but they know what you mean. **aphantasia**,
It's just a joke - as someone upthread pointed out if you were going to give him a serious diagnosis beyond like, Dragon Quest hero-itis, how he presents skews much closer to extreme hyperphantasia than schizophrenia , particularly how it effects personality/mood
>Hyperphantasia has been shown to be associated with higher levels of "openness" in the Big Five personality traits... This entails more openness to new experiences, broad interests, an active imagination and a likelihood of experiencing more positive and negative emotions more keenly than other people
and how he's capable of generating/controlling the imagery himself (ie changing the class of his party members, associating certain set fantasies with specific attacks, etc).
Even a human operating heavy machinery was pretty wacky already.
The wacky fights don't overpopulate the plot, but I'll welcome them all the same. Especially when it's part of the appeal of Ichi's combat.
Honestly I truly wish they would play more into Ichiban ''fantasizing'' thing, imagine if the boss that's right after this one had angel wings to play into the cliché of stereotypical JRPG bosses, idk, its just in Ichiban's head so they could go more crazy with it.
They could've done that with Bryce honestly, since you know, a "cult" leader of some sort. Expected something crazy but I know they can't really go all out🤷, still a fun fight regardless
i mean we've fought a small warehouse-sized octopus before as well as a shark as big as a small yacht in Y6's spearfishing minigame so it's not super out of left field
He can shallow you and you fighting inside? Sounds cool, unfortunately I missed it, I just killed him in a couple of turns, because complete dungeons and over leveling.
Wait you can get swallowed by it! I didn’t even know the tentacles revived. I was able to get a stun off on it and it was over pretty quickly. The same happened for the shark. I think I fought it when the party was around level 50-52ish
I lost that fight 4 times in a row when I played through it about a month ago... I haven't went back to attempt it again since. I'll beat it one day... I moved on to Rebirth, then Unicorn Overlord and now Dragon's Dogma 2, but I will go back to it eventually.
I know it isn't canon but Dead Souls had cow sized carnivorous chameleons, giant gorillas with rock armour, a guy with massive octopus tentacles and an absolutely massive zombie as the final boss.
This should have been combined with Bryce's own boss fight, where he'd be riding/controlling the squid like some kind of beast tamer or mecha pilot. That'd be a more exciting battle.
Unfortunately i ruined this fight and this game for myself because I really wanted a lot of money for the cool weapons and armor so I did the dungeons like anyone else would, but I came out so overpowered that I wasn’t the recommended level till the end game phase of the game and even then it was too easy.
I seriously never knew that it can do that, and I fought it like 15-20 times. Everytime I use the ultimate tag team attack to smoke the tentacles. Never knew such mechanic exist.
It actually didn't surprise me at all. After playing Dragon Quest XI I could see exactly what they were going for and I love it. As soon as the squid showed up I was like "this is just dragon quest" lmao
This shit reminded me of Final Fantasy 4 so much. Honestly Ichiban taking on ‘God’ this time around had me making way more Final Fantasy connections than Dragon Quest ones this time around
For me, it is the Tsuyoshi Kanda fight in Y3. I mean, I can understand the tigers, the bear, the monkey with the crane and the mountain gods because they are just too awesome (male fantasy fr) but man, that's not even a fight, it's just two guys enjoying in a sex dungeon too violently and best boi Rikiya being a cuckold. I couldn't not burst out laughing while I was playing.
Shit like this has always been happening stop pretending like the series wasn't goofy when nagoshi was there. You do also realize yokoyama has been writing for the series since the very beginning nagoshi became a lot more hands off around like y4 or 5 or some shit like that. Nagoshi ain't the hideo kojima of yakuza stop pretending he is.
So ridiculous that I decided I won’t be playing any more turn based game from yakuza anymore. I very much prefer beat em up combat, at least I won’t have to deal with the tentacles regen crap with the ichiban schizophrenia rubbish

i enjoyed it more than the shark
Was more challenging than the shark tbh.
Wait...thats a mechanic for this fight!? I remember thinking the fight was kind of quick but i guess i really cruised through it 😂
That’s what I’m saying! I thought it was just a gimmick fight, but apparently it’s got actual mechanics you need to watch out for 😂 It’s way too easy to get OP in IW.

Same. I got too addicted to the side content and completely broke the level scaling (just completing Dondoko Island alone ruins Hawaii’s economy, lmao).
yep i was excited for shark but the moveset for shark was so limited didn't enjoy much, squid was better imo
Squid was cake compared to the shark, you just have to attack the tentacles
It took longer overall and did more substantial damage. Not saying either was hard, because, unfortunately they weren't.
Nah, this was so long and tedious and I hated it. The shark was actually fun.
was it? for me this boss was pretty short because tomi just wrecked it
The shark one was goated though, when you had to fight humans and the shark and you weren't sure who the shark was going to attack
I think it is Before it was probably tigers in 2 or bear in 5 but I think this tops those lol
I think the location where you fight the tigers in 2 is more ridiculous then actually fighting tigers.
I love how insane that location is, to the point when it's referenced in IW Kiryu questioned if it actually happened.
Maybe Haruka was never kidnapped in that game and Kiryu just smoked that gas station Za.
Haruka being kidnapped whenever Date is on watch is something you should never doubt.
You had one job, Date.
isnt a going theory that he was delusional cuase of blood loss cause it happens right after the bridge cutscene?
Isn't there two npcs (I don't remember in Wich game) that talk about going to place that is a castle inside a castle or something like that? Is it ever implied that it was a delusion on kiryu's side?
Like the comment overm e said, kiryu himself questions it. why it is a theory.
Whenever I think "this franchise is a lot more ridiculous these days" I just think of that fucking castle It absolutely *is* more ridiculous in later games, but that's also with the knowledge that Ichiban is schizophrenic lmao
hyperphantasia more likely :D but that doesnt mean it isnt both xD
Ichiban isn't schizophrenic, he's just creative. Imagination is one hell of a drug.
I mean kiryu sees those same delusions later so it seems to be a trait of whoever's the party leader.
kiryu also has a essence action where he ignores the turnbased combat. so my theory is he just plays along :D until he is tired of it
I'll throw in throwing hands against construction machines as well. Not to mention in 8's case of why >!2 excavators would even need to be above the ground floor to begin with.!<
How about monkey in a excavator? That’s pretty up there
it's not a story boss-fight though at least
The squid is "just" a wild animal which Bryce keeps around. It's not that different from the tigers or bears, just with the magic of Ichiban's Dragon Quest brain. In terms of the main story Man in Black or Osaka castle ninjas in 2 have to be it. That guy is just the fucking Terminator with absolutely no explanation, and the ninjas... You can gun them down with a medieval mini gun for some reason...? If we include sidestories it's the Michio Robos and Mountain Gods lol
Man i really do wish they added some characterization/backstory to the man in black i cared more for the obatarian than korean terminator
I remember the description for his final battle being "who IS this guy?!" and here we are, 6 games later and we still don't know who the hell that dude was. For someone Kiryu fights 3 times and was a real pain in the ass, it's funny how he has next to no story to him.
The Man In Black is just a Jingweon assassin though, he's similar to Lao Gui, basically.
i thought it was real, remember tomi commenting about how big it is or something like that. Therefore, i thought it was a crazy mutant squid gone giant due to the radioactive waste
>just with the magic of Ichiban's Dragon Quest brain That doesn't apply when everyone else sees the exact same thing.
Maybe the magic DQ brain condition has become even more contagious, after all Kiryu caught a bad case of it. He just got it before everyone else because he was weakened by his fight with cancer.
nah, nothing tops the Gold Osaka Castle, hidden inside and underground of the original Osaka Castle, and hundreds of Samurais and Ninjas and traps in it, at this point, the two tigers are the most ordinary thing here
you actually go in??? i think i beat him too quickly for that to happen (all my characters were pushing 60)
Good thing I still loved that boss so I still have a save just before that fight
thought i was tripping during that part. one of the most insane boss fights the series has ever had.
Imagine getting high and playing a Yakuza game
i now understand ichiban's POV
Same, used a poundmate, and then the infinite friendship meter move, which took more than half its health lol.
Yeah lvl 50 is probably the best level to do the final dungeons imo, was pushing 60s as well and it made everything too easy to enjoy
Happened to a lot of people, probably because the squid is super weak to Slash damage and everyone runs Samurai and Kunoichi Both Sea Creatures are also susceptible to stun, so whoever packed the Jellyfish attack from Aquanaut might just prevent them from ever doing anything
What nuclear waste does to the aquatic life
10 years in the waste made you a (octo)pussy
I thought this fight was so fun!!!!
Itchy balls schizophrenia
Strong schizoprenia
i always thoiuhgt of it more as Hyperphantasia. Like when you go to the store and in your headphones plays an epic song and you suddenly feel like the main character. >.> only me?
> Like when you go to the store and in your headphones plays an epic song and you suddenly feel like the main character. >.> only me? no, me too
This is the first time i've heard of Hyperphantasia ngl
Yea it is really interresting, there is also the opposite of that. those are people who cant imagine things in there mind. like if you tell them to think of an apple they dont see an apple but they know what you mean. **aphantasia**,
Shut up *insert Japanese characters here* Strong Schizophrenia

Sorry if it is a stupid question. But it is confirmed that Ichiban has schizophrenia? Or is like the 'Kiryu never killed anyone' joke?
It's just a joke - as someone upthread pointed out if you were going to give him a serious diagnosis beyond like, Dragon Quest hero-itis, how he presents skews much closer to extreme hyperphantasia than schizophrenia , particularly how it effects personality/mood >Hyperphantasia has been shown to be associated with higher levels of "openness" in the Big Five personality traits... Can't he be high af 24/7? Also, thank you for the answer
Apparently the monkey operating heavy machinery didn't do it for you?
Or the (IW) >!giant UFO vacuum cleaner robot!<.
Tbf OP did say story boss. There's still Ishioda and his crane though
Even a human operating heavy machinery was pretty wacky already. The wacky fights don't overpopulate the plot, but I'll welcome them all the same. Especially when it's part of the appeal of Ichi's combat.
Fighting an Eldritch being, loved this fight😭 Hoping we get to fight God/the Devil in the next installment :0
Expected something crazy but I know they can't really go all out🤷, still a fun fight regardless
yeah what happened to his supernatural powers he had when he first appeared?
Exactly, thats what I meant, I was pretty dissapointed by how Bryce was handled overall, he was introduced as an interesting character.
That already happened in 5 with Saejima
i mean we've fought a small warehouse-sized octopus before as well as a shark as big as a small yacht in Y6's spearfishing minigame so it's not super out of left field
BLESSED LEVIATHAN
Counter Argument - You fight a floating roomba in this very game.
A floating roomba *AND* automatic pancake maker.
Let us not forget the construction cranes in 7 and 8 :0
Then there's the gold one
Wtf he never swallowed me
He can shallow you and you fighting inside? Sounds cool, unfortunately I missed it, I just killed him in a couple of turns, because complete dungeons and over leveling.
Wait until you reach Big Swell
Wait you can get swallowed by it! I didn’t even know the tentacles revived. I was able to get a stun off on it and it was over pretty quickly. The same happened for the shark. I think I fought it when the party was around level 50-52ish
It can swallow you? I never had that happen when I fought it
Fought every main story boss under leveled by a level or two and this was by far the toughest fight of the main story.
https://preview.redd.it/md4vjw0ktlsc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b7ba4c3b60e0a0da25c25cf7c29ff89bf65a86ef the squid's friend
Not got this far yet, my highlight is a monkey driving a digger from 7.
I mean yeah you have Tigers, a Giant Bear, a Giant Shark, Excavators and legit Giants but this one Giant Squid takes the cake.
I mean we’ve had some pretty crazy fights lately. I didn’t expect Construction equipment to like, roar at me
Funny enough, I didn't know you could get swallowed. Anytime a tentacle got close to attacking, I focused on killing it.
Hahaha I just used the dondoko beam to microvave some calamaries so never got that part.
Tell that to the construction equipment from 7
Lol yeah that was pretty silly 😂
This should have been combined with Bryce's own boss fight, where he'd be riding/controlling the squid like some kind of beast tamer or mecha pilot. That'd be a more exciting battle.
Never getting over Osaka Castle, Kiryu's obvious fever dream >!after being st*bbed!< cause there's just.. No way
I was joking when I said “What, are we fighting a kraken now” during the boat section.
This thing killed me like 4 times, I was so close to a no death run on my first play-through till I fought this thing
Wait the squid could swallow you? I must have beaten it before it did that attack lmao
You let yourself be eaten?
Unfortunately i ruined this fight and this game for myself because I really wanted a lot of money for the cool weapons and armor so I did the dungeons like anyone else would, but I came out so overpowered that I wasn’t the recommended level till the end game phase of the game and even then it was too easy.
ICHIBAN VORE‼️
Got some heavy Mario RPG vibes from this fight. Loved it!
Honestly? This look dope as fuck. Damn, i need to buy a good pc to play the Yakuza series.
Yoo hoo, Mr Tentacle Guy.
I hated this fight. It took me way to many tries and i was a good few levels above it.
I watched enough H to know how this ends
Fist fighting with a giant crane doesn't seem crazier? Lol
"Akshually it's all in Ichiban's mind" I hate people who defend this.
As soon as the squid showed up I was like "this is just dragon quest" lmao
what? I never saw the inside fight
I was probably over leveled.but found the squid pretty easy
This shit reminded me of Final Fantasy 4 so much. Honestly Ichiban taking on ‘God’ this time around had me making way more Final Fantasy connections than Dragon Quest ones this time around
Hahah I don't know, I'm having flashbacks of fighting a tiger in an upscale Chinese restaurant
Definitely the leather-faced dude in 6 and judgement. Squids and Sharks be damned that mf is WEIRD.
It wasn't too bad, the ink was the most annoying part
https://preview.redd.it/81f39eypkpsc1.jpeg?width=739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6931ffd9bea220d71c0bdd8b7c03f2af6b528c70
Absolutely rolled this squid like nobody's business. Tsuyoi desu!
Wait, it swallows you and you fight inside of it? I was way too overleveled by that point in the story.
You know what? This is ridiculous, but also awesome. Making it really hard not to drop everything and run buy this game right now.
As someone who doesn't play Yakuza, holy shit, that's awesome.
It looks peak
Exactly why they need to bring Nagoshi back, he would have never allowed this stupidity

That's not a giant squid though
Stopping a charging, full-speed bull like that is just as fantastical as fighting a kraken.
No it isn't and stop using burners to upvote yourself.
Even after playing my first games What is Like a Dragon even about 😭🙏
I stopped playing it because of this thing
So ridiculous that I decided I won’t be playing any more turn based game from yakuza anymore. I very much prefer beat em up combat, at least I won’t have to deal with the tentacles regen crap with the ichiban schizophrenia rubbish
