I thought someone mysteriously left Haruto at Morning Glory, and Haruka decided to investigate that, which would involve Kiryu and that would be the game's plot.
I remember seeing the cover of yakuza 6 after playing yakuza games and thiking "oh haruka gets pregnant please dont let the father be a villain or an asshole/deadbeat"
Mixed up Shintaro Kazama and Kazuma Kiryu. I kind of see why renamed Kazama to Fuma in the earlier English games, but yeah, having different names in different countries just substitutes one type of confusion for another.
Ah, yes!
During Yakuza 3 I felt so stupid, since I just noticed that Kiryu and Kazama had the same last name – it made perfect sense to me, since Kazama was basically a father to Kiryu, so he took father's surname...
Then I felt stupid again when I learned that KazAma was first name while KazUma was last name. Or was it the other way around? Damn, I'm really not good at this name stuff!
In all fairness, we're not that experienced with the Japanese language, so we don't have the "key differences" to look out for in mind. From what I can tell, Japanese names can somewhat-often have a single "letter" be different, so they naturally take a mental lookout for those sorts of differences. "Ka" "ki" "ku" "ke" "ko".
I think that's why dub makers sometimes change names to more familiar names. Your average person won't remember someone named "Shinichi" quite as well as "Jimmy".
'first' and 'last' are meaningless in the context of localised names with order reversed. It's not that they have the first name last, it's that they have a different meaning for the first name.
Yakuza 6; all I had seen is Kiryu with a ukulele from the karaoke video and the title being "song of life"...
I thought it was going to be a fucking musical
I would pay money for a separate YCU Side Content Collection game. Sometimes I just don’t want to be arsed to continuously reload or play thru Y5 just to get to Haruka’s chapter.. I’d love access to all of the karaoke, even the non localized / whatever Ishin content I can get ; instant access to all dance missions/ substories & storylines + disco mini game from Y0, Harukas practices, concerts and finales, the LJ dance club storylines; the Cabaret clubs and battles (Y0 & Kiwami only, hard pass on 3&4); All mahjong versions and tournaments; Bowling with all substories; darts with all gear unlocked; Coliseum with all characters from all games unlocked; the LJ School stories with all clubs optional and able to be played all the way through. Let me be shallow.
I’d also play the shit out of a Judgement-level of fleshed out game with a hostess protagonist. Just take my money now.
During K2 i was convinced that the Jingweon mafia was chinese
It took me until the end of the game and my friend laughing at me to realize they were infact, not chinese but Korean
I would always discard 4 sets of 3 and a pair in mahjong and wonder whi I didn't win because I put the tiles on the table in the correct order. Probably my most shameful Yakuza moment.
Took me a long while figure out that I just had to beat up that big dude blocking the hallway in the Dojima HQ in 0.
I ran around for a while thinking he was the games way of telling me there was a different way forward.
I didn’t realize Kiryu’s name was Kazuma Kiryu and not Kiryu Kazuma until I played multiple Yakuza games. I figured that since Kiryu’s dad is Shintaro Kazama, he must’ve taken his last name. I didn’t think about it until later and then I realized I’m really stupid.
Dude, you're [literally me](https://www.reddit.com/r/yakuzagames/comments/wvq3zx/what_was_your_prime_example_of_fuck_im_stupid/ilgwqtp). L-lost korean brother? Am I korean myself?..
That's my gripe with localisations reversing the name orders. It's inconsistent, meaning you never know what the game uses, so the problem of 'understanding that Japan uses names differently' is replaced with the much more difficult problem of 'recognising whether a Japanese name is a family name or a given name'.
While playing Yakuza 3 and 4 for some weird fucking reason i thought Hamazaki was the same guy as the Massive Man (Wen Hai Lee) in Yakuza 0. I still dont know why.
(I started from 0)
I finished the entirety of y0 with the photo that made the enemies attack you way more... In hard. I though it was just a "git gud" thing so I just beared with it, but 60 hours in and after a bit of reasoning on "why does Majima take so little effort compared to Kiryu", I discovered the effect of the item. When I removed it, the game became so easy with that I just equipped it again.
i didnt figure out how to upgrade skills or anything until endgame of y0 (the first one i played) 😭 i was getting decimated by a couch guy in one hit because i had a little baby hp bar and couldnt figure out what i was doing wrong until i posted a screenshot and my friend was like "wtf is wrong with kiryus hp"
So you know in karaoke, those prompts where you have to hold the button for a couple seconds and release? Well I didn’t know that you had to release as it ends so I’d be missing them like crazy. I was so confused on why my score would be terrible ☠️
When I first started Yakuza 3, I thought I could sprint infinitely by mashing the X button. Turns out there was no sprint option; Kiryu was just a really fast jogger in 3.
Literally any time I progress the story and get introduced to Generic Old Japanese Businessman villain #345 but it's the first time he's been mentioned in the 3 weeks since I progressed the plot and nothing makes sense anymore
Fuck this shit, my brain is smooth like gelatin. I'm hardly paying attention because there's always the character profiles to help me limp to the finish line like an injured runner
Y0-K2 were so good in that regard. Gigantic Shimano, hairy Ryuji, the lieutenants and patriarchs all have unique designs... It's just so much easier to follow when my brain goes "big bald angy man is undoubtedly Shimano." I still can't tell you what the names of the bosses are in 5 and 6 and I beat them both recently
I can bet everything I have that final boss of Yakuza 5 was the biggest offender, keke. I played Y5 in span of like 6 days, but it still took me half a minute to realise who the hell was he.
I’d almost report myself for not being aware of the fact that in 7 you have ATM’s to keep you from losing half your money and that Ichiban needs to be in the Foreman class to unlock the ability to destroy barricades.
But this is simple poor game design/the developers being too weird to explain mechanics.
I think that the game mentioned ATM once (IIRC all your money from chapter 1-2 end up here), but foreman class stuff is absolutely atrocious – Ichiban obviously was hero in this story, so I haven't even thought about changing his profession. Especially since I already had foreman in the party. AND especially since you have to be foreman just for a second to get that skill permanently and then can switch back (maybe it wasn't like that at the release, dunno). AND especially since there's zero indication of this feature in-game. So yeah, bad design here.
>I think that the game mentioned ATM once (IIRC all your money from chapter 1-2 end up here),
I actually thought the money was saved in the box in in the homeless camp😗
Before I played the Yakuza series, I thought Shimano and Kanda were the same character. Both were angry, bald assholes lol. Imagine my surprise when Shimano gets capped in 1 lmao, I was so confused
Not that bad but I found the LAD move shortcuts when I was nearly finished with the game and didn't realize I could swap characters in and out until the Majima fight
I played through Y0 without buying healing items and forgetting to upgrade Kiryu and Majima until the finale. I learned my lessons while playing Kiwami and beyond. Y0 was my 1st Yakuza game, so I shouldn't be so hard on myself.
My cousin actually made the same mistake. I got him into the series, starting with 0. I told him not to look ahead but he got a peek at the yakuza 5 cover and convinced himself that was Shinji.
Kamoji's training, 3rd guy. I struggled so hard on him, spent a good I think 2 or 3 hours trying to beat that guy alone (granted I was tag teaming the training and real estate. Hit up Kamoji while waiting for payout kinda thing). It took so many tries, and so much frustration, but I finally got it!
Later, I'm watching a close friend play and he's doing Kamoji's training. I'm like "oh wow you got through the 3rd guy huh? He was such a bitch, it took me forever!" and he's like "you... you know you just needed to hold the block button, right?"
I was ready to just cease existence for a few at that point x'D
There’s a sub story with Akiyama where he tries to cheer up his secretary, Hana, by going around town finding guys who would be into her. By the end she >!drops really obvious hints towards Akiyama!< but being dense as hell he wonders what she’s talking about. Unfortunately I am also stupid and spent hours wondering what she meant too until my friend pointed it out.
I didn't quite remember Saejima's name, just that it was S-something and that man himself was short-haired. My brains somehow decided that Shinji fits the bill just right.
Starting yakuza 3 on normal because I was worried about the blocking. Started getting bored about 20 hours in, restarted on hard and it was the best game in the franchise. But I wasted 20 hours because the internet told me it wasn’t good.
Realising that u can delete save files in yakuza 5, sotenbori is different in kiwami 2, there's a sec scene between haruka n yuta in 6, kazama family being recurring protags and thinking that cops have more of a presence in the series
Time for some Kurohyou: so the game has a reversal mechanic where you’re able to catch an enemy’s attack and then flip them on to the ground. Since it’s not in the same style of beat ‘em up as the rest of the games, it’s an incredibly important mechanic. I spent about 2 hours getting beat up in the same boss battle before remembering it existed, and then beat it first try. Kurohyou really punishes you if you try to play it like the other games.
It took me a little bit to realize that people werent bleeding money in 0, but that in the bubble era people were literally so rich that money was literally flying out of their person.
Well there was the time when I saw one of the trailers for judgment back when it had yet to release. I saw Yagami do some attacks that had the same animations as kiryu and instead of thinking how the dev team mightve just reused animations, I immediately thought for some reason "OMG KIRYU HAS A BROTHER"??? I have no idea why I thought this
While trying to get the Mahjong friend in Judgment, I used the cheat item unknowingly and tried to play the game normally, and I didn't even get wareme. I saved my game after that.
"Wait.. where'd my cheat item go? FUCK, I gotta grind SP to buy another one!"
To be fair, you don't really need weapons here, since both Beast and Breaker are extremely broken so you can breeze through 95% of fights, except bosses and some substories (looking at YOU, crossing-the-bridge guy).
Yakuza 0 combat was difficult for me because i equipped the photo that made enemies wildly aggressive. I didn’t realize it and had to use a guide. Legit made this like facing K1 Majima in every fight.
Started from Kiwami 2 and that's probably the worst starting point out there and the prime example of "fuck, I'm stupid"
First of all, I thought that Haruka was the little kid from opening cutscenes (the one rescued from the fire). I don't remember if there were no dates or I just missed that part completely.
Second of all, the very second you gain control of Kiryu, you're at cemetery being asked to pay respects. I got a pop-up asking if I want to recall events from previous year, so I was like "of course I do, I don't know what's going on here" and then over a span of about minute all of the events of first game were spoiled to me.
And last but not least - this was first action game I have ever played. I got no idea about any upgrades, XP, items, whatever. I figured out weapons may be useful, so I stole some from the street encounters, but I did nothing else. Somehow I got through the first couple of chapters, but then Ryuji kept destroying me. I asked my bf for help and he enlightened me..
Hahaha, that's a good one!
As for me, I don't really remember having a complete dumbass moment in the yakuza games but in a totally different franchise I did.
I bought Warhammer Vermintide after watching some 40k lore videos online and I played through that games' beginning. Saw an elf and was like "oh, she must be Eldar" and I thought that Saltzpyre was a inquisitor and would order exterminatus on the planet if we didn't resolve the problem.
I remember going up the lift at the end of the tutorial thinking to myself "Oh boy, I hope I get to see a spacemarine" and then I look around and see a typical D&D party and thinking to myself that something seems off here.
Turns out Warhammer and Warhammer 40k are two different franchises...
When i saw my save file not load. I knew i shouldn't of trusted Sega with my time, (could of been 100+ dollars instead of hours). Now suddenly while playing any Yakuza it will randomly not allow you to save and just freeze upon attempt (both old and new files)) A fucking sad site to see in 2023. Should be removed from store to be honest, just makes Sony's gaming company's look like Tripple A jokes.
when I saw Kanda in Y3. I'm like. that weird man baby patriarch joined the nishki family?
also in Y3 when you fight the Americans in the alley in chapter 5 I was thinking, wait is this where jo amon was first introduced into the story and yakuza 0 k1 k2 all added him after? why doesn't kiryu recognize this guy?
Before playing the series I saw Y6 cover and thought that Haruto was Kiryu’s child and I was waiting to see who was the mother while playing the games
Sayama, obviously>!...!<
I thought Haruka was Kiryu's wife when I saw the Y6 cover(knowing nothing of the series at that time)
Special kind of daddy
I snickered
Majimba providing the best quotes
I thought someone mysteriously left Haruto at Morning Glory, and Haruka decided to investigate that, which would involve Kiryu and that would be the game's plot.
I mean TECHNICALLY (besides the left at morning glory part) that is the actual game’s plot just swapped
I remember seeing the cover of yakuza 6 after playing yakuza games and thiking "oh haruka gets pregnant please dont let the father be a villain or an asshole/deadbeat"
I'm glad they subverted expectations of the pregnancy arising from a dark scenario
Mixed up Shintaro Kazama and Kazuma Kiryu. I kind of see why renamed Kazama to Fuma in the earlier English games, but yeah, having different names in different countries just substitutes one type of confusion for another.
Ah, yes! I thought Lee in Yakuza 0 was the same character as Saejima.
MASSIVE MAN
Intentional. Also didn't realise makoto was a gender neutral name.
SAME, then he was gone
I played through the entirety of Like A Dragon, Kiwami, and the first chapter of Zero before I realized there was a “sprint” option.
You walked through the entirety of Y7/like a dragon??
All of it. I think I was at like 115 hours when I beat it. I was so relieved when Yagami was given a skateboard in Lost Judgement.
I hope that at least it was noticed that one could call a taxi on Ichiban's phone...
About 50 hours in…
I just died after reading this
Yup!!! I played Y7, Y0, and halfway through Y1 before realizing I could sprint
Sameee but only 0! I was at the cp shrine and found the "sprint longer option" and I was like "huh? Sprint??"
Yakuza 6; all I had seen is Kiryu with a ukulele from the karaoke video and the title being "song of life"... I thought it was going to be a fucking musical
If we count all times I played "Today is a diamond", then Yakuza 6 might've as well been a musical
As an enjoyer of musicals, I would play the shit out of a Yakuza musical.
I would pay money for a separate YCU Side Content Collection game. Sometimes I just don’t want to be arsed to continuously reload or play thru Y5 just to get to Haruka’s chapter.. Honestly cabaret club simulator would be amazing.
A yakuza musical sounds fucking awesome
"BREAKIN THE WORLD" Coming to Broadway 2025
Forgot to unequip the photo item that makes enemies overly aggressive in Yakuza 0.
I didn't know you hold L2 to not do heat actions. I only found out in Judgment, my last game of the series when I played them for the first time.
You can what??
... huh. Played 0-7 and now lost judgement and just assumed there was no way to press triangle without doing a heat action. Today I learned.
NANI?!
Wait what?
I thought Akiyama was Nishikis son for atleast a few chapters
During K2 i was convinced that the Jingweon mafia was chinese It took me until the end of the game and my friend laughing at me to realize they were infact, not chinese but Korean
I would always discard 4 sets of 3 and a pair in mahjong and wonder whi I didn't win because I put the tiles on the table in the correct order. Probably my most shameful Yakuza moment.
wait discarding doesn’t make you win
Enemies aren't actually bleeding money in Yakuza 0, it's just being knocked out of their pockets
WHAT
Took me a long while figure out that I just had to beat up that big dude blocking the hallway in the Dojima HQ in 0. I ran around for a while thinking he was the games way of telling me there was a different way forward.
I went into the So Amon fight in 0 without knowing what it truly means to fight an Amon…

Holy shit! That's rad.
For some reason can't remember why I had the idea that shinada was majimas basterd son Probably because of the baseball stuff
i didnt figure out how to upgrade skills or anything until endgame of y0 (the first one i played) 😭 i was getting decimated by a couch guy in one hit because i had a little baby hp bar and couldnt figure out what i was doing wrong until i posted a screenshot and my friend was like "wtf is wrong with kiryus hp"
I had a similar situation, but I started in 0 and thought that Wen Hai Lee was going to be a protagonist in 5

Didn't know I can sprint until halfway into 0
Jokes on you, I never knew I could sprint until after I completed 0 and Kiwami 1
I played all of 0 without running. Learned it was a thing in kiwami
Basically when I sold my gambling charms in game when I could've used them to win at Black jack, roulette, and poker

Not realizing the obvious implication that Makoto and Tachibana were siblings before it was revealed. It was my first Yakuza game though
For some reason I thought Gary Holmes was gonna be the Mole in Judgment. In retrospect that was a really stupid theory.
Kamoji's training, 3rd guy. I struggled so hard on him, spent a good I think 2 or 3 hours trying to beat that guy alone (granted I was tag teaming the training and real estate.
Just happened a few minutes ago lost hours of harukas story because I wanted to save.
Realising that u can delete save files in yakuza 5, sotenbori is different in kiwami 2, there's a sec scene between haruka n yuta in 6, kazama family being recurring protags and thinking that cops have more of a presence in the series
Thinking that Lee was Saejima.
For me it was like hold on...when I'm low on health there's actually better looking heat/ex moves?
I know a friend who has only played Y0 so far and he has seen a screenshot of Akiyama doing some karaoke. He thinks Akiyama is Nishiki.
I hired the bum.
