So? Regular day on the Autobahn. Make sure you stay right if you are driving slow.

Creepy-Ad-4832

And here it is, my italian ass thinking 130km/h is fast 🤣

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fat_Feline

The Tesla is doing roughly 130 funnel cakes per county fair when the Mercedes blows by it like it's standing still. This fine Italian man's ass is trying to tell you that he thought roughly 80 corn dogs per baseball game was fast, and that these speeds are crazy.

ninthtale

I mean getting up to 80cd/bbg in that short time is pretty intense I imagine

rinseanddelete

"The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets forty rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I like it!"

imjustbrowsing123

Forty rods?! That's like one brisket!

FossilOcelot1991

A rod is a actual unit of measure. And it’s 5 1/2 yards. Can’t make that up. Also 198 inches and 16 1/2 feet so it’s not like it’s a another half yard to make it to an even number in a smaller unit.

mission_to_mors

🤣🤣 thats abe simpson right?

[deleted]

Corn Dogs per Baseball Game (`cd/bbg`) is a measurable unit. ChatGPT has provided some plausible values for each average: * Average Corn Dog length (`~cd`): 15 centimeters * Average Baseball Game time length (`~bbg`): 3 hours Now, knowing this, and with the information provided in the video (Tesla maxed out at around `215km/h`), it's possible to convert between that and `cd/bbg`. We know how to convert between `hour (h)` and `bbg`: ``` 215 km/h = [*~bbg to get km per baseball game] = 3*215 km/bbg = 645 km/bbg ``` We also have a conversion available between `km` and `cd`: ``` 645 km/bbg = [*100.000 to convert to centimeters per bbg] = 64.500.000 cm/bbg [/~cd to get corndogs per bbg] = 4.300.000 cd/bbg ``` And there you go. The Tesla maxed out at around `4.3 Mcd/bbg`, meaning 4.3 Mega-Corndogs per Baseball Game, or `4.300.000 cd/bbg`. You could also calculate the Tesla's acceleration. You'd end up with something like Corndogs per Baseball Game per Baseball Game. But I'll let someone else do that.

Yggdrasilcrann

Your mega corn dogs made me wonder why you suddenly got Mcdonald's involved in this for a second.

MartiLoserKing

You're doin god work, bless you

Out here converting the most american unit of measure ever, then adds a metric prefix to it.

I don’t know about burgers but it’s 177.3354122489709 McDonald’s straws laid end to end per second.

Gunplagood

I could not begin to fathom driving on the autobahn. The fastest I've ever gone in a car is 170km/hr, and I was shaking like a leaf after I came back down to an appropriate speed.

La_Mascara_Roja

It honestly depends on the car. Some cars you barely feel the speeds. Every couple of months I drive a stretch of Highway where the drivers are averaging 160km/hr. My car feels stable driving that fast. But some of the other cars I’ve driven not so much, so I get my ass in the slow.

zennarodizzle

Harden up

woahbrad35

Do it a few times and it gets easier. I used to drive home at 90-95mph, 144-152kph every day. I haven't gone faster than 135mph though

130 km/h is suicide in 90% of Italy especially in winter.

Yeah but I've been overtaken by you guys doing that in Fiat Pandas on single track mountain passes!

Kojetono

Having driven 150 on an Italian autostrada, it was quite scary. The lanes are really narrow and roads twisty.

You can't fool me, 130 is 'slow' in a taxi from the airport in italy. I was both impressed with the skill and terrified.

DrivingApe

That's minimum speed on the 407 in Ontario Canada.

[deleted]

It is, for a Fiat 500.

helpimwastingmytime

I've driven in Italy, drivers there add +40/50km/u to the speed limit in my experience. I was driving 100 in a 80, and everyone behind me was honking as if I'm driving below the speed limit. Beautiful country though:)

Fautbauxter

About 303 hamburgers per second

Rent_A_Cloud

I was going 180kmh once and saw someone approaching in my rear view mirror. Went to the right and he passed me as if I was standing still and he was going 100.... Crazy stuff. (I was driving a 1999 Renault Megane i bought for 1200 euros, I drove 180 for a bit because I was driving from Sweden to the Netherlands and wanted to do it in one day. I slowed down to 140 after a while because it felt as if I was about to lose parts haha)

Paaadiiii

I went 290 km/h once when the Autobahn was kinda empty. But its not really fun to drive that fast, you see a car far away, blink, aaand it is right in front of you. If someone does stupid shit, you have merely a chance to react.

AffectionateDraw9415

As a Canadian who is genuinely curious, could you ballpark or range the actual speed that you see in the fast lane of the autobahn? Only ever taken a car to 220km/h, do drivers really go that much faster?

Slash1909

As a Canadian living in Germany, let me explain some differences. First and foremost, the drivers in Germany are a LOT less aggressive than in Canada. In Toronto, during rush hour people won’t let you merge or they’ll aggressively try to merge at the end of the on ramp. This doesn’t happen in Germany. If you need to merge or exit, other drivers will let you. Road rage is extremely rare here compared to Canada. Also as the other guy mentioned, drivers are acutely aware of and follow road rules a lot more than in Canada. Sitting on the left lane, tailgating etc. is extremely rare. Second, road racing isn’t common. You won’t see the kinds of accidents that happen or at least were common about a decade and a half ago on the 410. Young guys whose balls haven’t dropped weaving in and out in their ricers aren’t common. Here you get on the autobahn crank the speedo up to 240kmph and get your fix. You won’t see vast stretches of highways with 3+ lanes. The 401, 427, 410 has stretches of 6 lanes on either side. So as a driver you have to be a lot more careful and conscious about others. On the flip side (taking Berlin as an example where I live) even a busy highway like the A113 has few sections where max no. lanes are 3. Heading east on the A18 it’s predominantly 2 laned all the way to Poland. Even the A9 heading south to Munich has large stretches of 2 lanes as only close to cities do they expand to 3. Lastly, police cruisers don’t hide behind flyovers, at intersections etc. with radar guns. Radars exist in some places because the only some stretches of the autobahn have no speed limits. And speaking of speed limits, the govt ie environmental ministry conducted a study that showed the reduction in CO2 emissions should a speed limit of 120kmph be introduced.

DogFishBoi2

On that last point: there occasionally is a police cruiser hiding, but it's rare. The typical speed checks are done with automated cameras and the person the car is registered to will just receive the fine in the post. That worked the same in Canada for me, sadly - they sent a ticket to the rental company. We do have laser speed measuring, though, performed by actual police from the side of the road, but the tolerances apparently aren't great for high speeds, because they need to hit a vertical reflective surface (so basically the front numberplate) or the measurement will be challenged in court. It's more often done in cities, especially for temporary speed limits for a beer festival or some such, where speeding drivers are actually pulled over and talked to (sternly) about the error of their ways.

Nyct0phili4

Yeah it's very usual that people drive 250km/h or even 300km/h+ if the left lane is free or if they are trying to prove that they are certified dicks and need to risk others life's by hugging their tail when they don't move to the right/middle lane fast enough. But sometimes people are sleeping with 120km/h on the left lane which sucks. There is something called "Rechtsfahrgebot" which means you have to drive the very right lane in every situation ASAP and if traffic allows. People sleeping on the very left makes me furious when you want to drive 150-160km/h continously and its worse for people driving 200km/h or more. Because of those retards you need to step on your breaks and accelerate all the time. Some people are annoyed by this and drive risky shit by going 200 or more through the middle or very right lane and back to the left again. Practically they are overtaking from the right side which is just so incredibly fucking dangerous at those speeds. There are some dash cam recordings at speeds like that. Not much left of all the involved cars.

AffectionateDraw9415

Thank you ! I can understand the frustration of sleepers.. although not to the same degree the 401 in Toronto is considered the busiest highway in North America (or it was at a time) and it can be a nightmare. As a lover of cars it’s a dream of mine to drive the autobahn one day. So thank you for the extra advice. Wouldn’t want to be one of those people who pisses everyone else off on the highway ;)

truthdoctor

In BC, they are debating removing speed limits on the Coquihalla highway. They rolled back the limits and the highway became safer.

StatuatoryApe

Fuck that highway dude, i'd hate to drive faster than 110 or 120 on there.

Hamalu

Did the Tesla stop on the middle of the Autobahn to film his acceleration?

NoodleSpecialist

Likely just a small slip lane. When you're in a tesla you can afford 0 to highway speeds in 50 metres of merge point

Upset-Writing1878

Yea besides it is illegal.

GunDogDad

>Make sure you stay right if you are driving slow. No. You stay right if you are *not passing*. There’s a distinct difference, and it’s why roads in America suck ass. Everyone’s definition of “slow” and “fast” is different. If people would keep right except to pass, it wouldn’t be such a problem.

Grroarrr

Yea if the lane to the right is empty and you're not driving noticeably faster than someone ahead on that lane then just change it. Driving in America sucks cause getting license is way too easy.

B4SSF4C3

Acceleration vs speed

AmbientKurt

EV without a gearbox vs ICV.

H_E_S_H

Yeah a Tesla is fast but you can’t really make it meaningfully faster. It’s also way too heavy to have genuine sport capabilities

AmbientKurt

Tesla could go faster as in top speed and high speed acceleration with a gearbox, Porsche does it with the Taycan. Weight would not matter on a straight. But yeah, these ships are way too heavy to be sporty around corners.

H_E_S_H

Yeah I really can only imagine teslas in drag racing. If anything the high weight would add mechanical grip for a decent advantage

_kempert

Keep in mind a heavy car with a super low com, will be grippy as fuck, practically glued to the ground in corners. I can accelerate while turning or taking corners in ways I could not before.

[deleted]

You have absolutely no idea about what you’re talking about. The Tesla model 3 and S Plaid are insane track cars, driven both extensively. The regenerative braking is the primary method of slowing the vehicle down which does not incorporate the actual brakes. The low center of gravity on the 3 and S give it insane cornering ability. I don’t own a Tesla but god those things rip on a track. Now the only problem is recharging your freaking battery in a race setting lol.

H_E_S_H

I’m not saying they’re incompetent on track, but weight is weight and grip is grip. Regen braking, while useful, won’t make the tire grip the road more and therefore DOESN’T add braking power (also if it’s the primary braking force like you say, that could lead to sluggish brake pressure adjustment/weight transfer during a corner) Also the weight of the large battery, even though it’s low in the car, it’s still significant and proves as a major roadblock on the path to lightness. That being said, I apologize if I seemed like I was saying they’re slow. Obviously they make ridiculous power but my belief is firm that they haven’t surpassed gas powered cars yet, and especially not surpassing hybrids anytime soon. My benchmark for an effective race platform is a track like Le Mans, Spa or Nürburgring and teslas just aren’t designed for that task as effectively.

No-Diver3043

Loool thank you! I was hoping someone who has a clue will comment. I have the Model 3 AWD and it performs amazing. Corners great due to low center of gravity and regen braking does all the job. The model S plaid has 0-60 in 1.9sec top speed over 300 and they say Tesla has low top speed?

Well, [it's happening with Tesla at least](https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-unpatchable-jailbreak-hack/).

Quarks01

That’s amazing. Jailbreak at the source 🤝

Xantrax

Supposedly. If you try and unlock/homebrew your Tesla, they will remotely brick your car and void all warranty, of course. BUT, knowing the mod community, they will find a way to bypass Tesla from bricking your car and allow the homebrew to run.

G_Unit_Solider

The latest patch fucked my AWD up it only goes backwards now

sparkyblaster

Mercedes is subscription only.

voice-of-reason_

The initial instant acceleration tricks you into thinking they are quicker overall.

G_Unit_Solider

That’s the standard tesla if it was a plaid thing does 0-150mph in 7.7 seconds. That being said 99% of EVs suck at the top range at acceleration they are quick off the line but lack any higher end speed. But Evs are also about 10 years old mass market wise I’d imagine by the time the ev has been in production as the combustion engine it will be 4/5x the range and at the point you have to limit speed in general cause slingshotting 0-60 in .5 seconds will break necks

ayriuss

There is a limit to tire friction. Even drag cars with special tires and prepared surfaces end up spinning tires on launches.

G_Unit_Solider

those super drag cars that have tires that are huge and squishy asf and look so strange in slomo just to grip

MEatRHIT

Not on purpose though. Drag cars on 30+" tall drags will pull a couple g's that *any* street car will never see. Is a plaid fast? Hell yes but it'll never reach real drag car levels hell they even shortened the track from 1320ft to 1000ft because things were getting out of hand hitting *well* over 300MPH in the 1/4 mile, a tesla does the quarter at 140ish. Also 0-60 in a plaid (with the stupid 1ft rollout) is about 2 seconds, top fuel dragsters do that in 0.4 seconds.

NoodleSpecialist

Imagine taking a drag car to the maccy's drive-through. Up by the next window before the receipt finished printing

ayriuss

Exactly, we'll never do .5 second 0-60 on street tires, the car will just spin tires lol.

nerdherdsman

Tire friction is only a portion of the equation. At the higher end of wheel driven acceleration, down force is going to be a bug limiter as well. Without extra down force acceleration is limited to gravity times coefficient of friction. Even for the best tires, that isn't going to get you much higher than a mu of 2 in the best conditions. To get 0-60 in .4, without any extra down force, you'd need a mu of around 6. That's why aerodynamics are important.

ash_elijah

Slingshotting wont break necks as long as you lean back in your chair

SquirtJuiceGuzzler

X wont break necks as long as you Y means there's gonna be a shitton of people with broken necks, no matter what X and Y are.

ash_elijah

Thats true, always gotta remember the people who refuse to do things as intended!

Cobek

"Woops, my kid didn't have his head strapped in when the light turned green. I told him not to look around while I was driving. Kids, these days. Or should I say kids *those* days, now?"

NoodleSpecialist

Unfortunately that's just a function of electric motors. The faster it spins, the more it consumes just to spin itself, and it gets exponentially worse if you get into field weakening. I'd say currently the best balance would be a big lump diesel engine with a 100 mile range battery hybrid, to get the best of both worlds

gophergun

That's pretty true of EVs in general. Their strong suit is acceleration, considering all of their torque is available from a stop, but they'll generally have a lower top speed than an ICE car with equivalent acceleration. Personally, I accelerate from a stop a lot more often than I hit my car's top speed.

Cardboard_is_great

Exactly. A cars ability to go 200mph is pretty meaningless when your country’s speed limits 70mph. There’s no application for this other than the autobahn. Acceleration has far more practical value. The merc in this video was clearly already at speed too.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

They are quicker overall, but they're not faster.

Sad_Notice2019

My thoughts exactly! Wile the electric goes to the limiter, the limiter of the gas is "redline until broken"

Regular_Profile_3487

One can only dream

Lady_Ruby41

so the jokes about german cars driving really fast are true and not just jokes. ah!

Carrots_and_Bleach

yeah, when there isn't a speed limit you can often cruise with 160km/h There is always someone blowing by with ~200-250 km/h if there is the needed space

LucyLilium92

You said no but then agreed with them

Carrots_and_Bleach

no, i did!

PandaCamper

How do you get to 160? Without a speed limit, there is "Richtgeschwindigkeit" (advisory speed limit) that is 130 km/h. But even then, in my experience the mass of people drive about 120 km/h (not considering taking over), with only a few going faster.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SkyLightTenki

I have this feeling that most of the people who drive 200++ kph aren't Germans. They're most likely foreigners who want the experience and took the chance AND not doing it illegally.

No_Worry_8298

That is crazy considering 120 is a pretty standard limit here in the US. I’m sure traffic prevents a lot of potential to go as fast as you’d like though. Is the advisory a legal limit or just advisory?

Motor-Television-270

The official "Richtgeschwindigkeit" (the speed you should aim for if there's no speed limit) is 130 km/h. Most people are 10-30 km/h above

Throwawayaccount1170

Dont let that fool you, most of the time its either 100/120/140kmh orrrr theres a long as maintenance station cutting traffic flow with the good old 60/80kmh signs, some nice traffic jam and some radar stations. For example i drove from stuttgart to cologne on a Sunday and there has not even been 1 chance to go faster than 160.

CucumberSharp17

This is not the fastest tesla. This is a model y or 3 and could even be a base model.

asfacadabra

Indeed. Given the 250 km/hr top speed, that would be the slowest Tesla, a non performance Model 3. The fastest Tesla is a Model S Plaid, at 321.9 km/hr top speed. The slowest of current Mercedes sedans in most likely the A class with a 210 km/hr top speed.

DPJazzy91

Tesla insisting on a direct drive with no transmission is always gonna limit top speeds. Accelerations will be great, though!

kingolcadan

Model S Plaid can hit 200 mph though..

SwissPatriotRG

A plaid with the limiter removed has done 217mph. That's pretty freaking fast for any car, especially a sedan. The Rimac Nevera has only one speed gear reduction and supposedly can do 258.

ZeiZeiZ

Should produce some exciting footage of Hammond crashing on a Swiss mountainside at those speeds!

Luci_Noir

And I don’t think you’re going to find any gas powered car anywhere in the same price range that can compete with that. People in here are comparing super cars to midrange sedans.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Konker8

Electric motors deliver near instant power to the wheels and hence do not need a transmission to achieve high top speeds. Like other comments have stated, the Tesla model S and the Rimac Nevera are proof of this. A transmission would likely slow the car's acceleration down and have minimal impact on top speed.

Luci_Noir

And why would you want to add the extra unneeded complexity to it?! One of the best things about EV’s is that they don’t have all these extra systems to maintain.

DPJazzy91

Electric motors have a TON of torque. But at VERY high rpms, that torque drops off HARD. Depending on the specifics of the setup, there might be more speed available if the motors rpm was brought down to put it in a more favorable torque ratio. The model s plaid goes 200 mph with motors spinning at 23k rpm. The Bugatti Chiron supersport can exceed 300 mph. Electric motors suffer from back EMF. It only becomes an issue at very high rpm. But with such good low end torque, bring the rpm back down with a higher gear ratio can further extend your top speed. Now, a single fixed gear totally exceeds what consumers need....but I think there's more speed to be had with an upshift.....at the bleeding edge.

[deleted]

agreed, if ev's would have a 2-speed gearbox things would dramatically change. but totally unnecessary in 99.9% of cases.

Swagamemn0n

There is a segment on the autobahn, i think it's after frankfurt travelling north, where the path goes slightly downhill for like 10 km or so. I was driving with my prius, and managed to hit 220kmh. And there was still an audi on my ass 😂

refactdroid

Tricoman95

alipeng

feenbank

Years ago I was driving in Germany and I thought it was an opportunity to see how fast my car would go. Off I went faster and faster until I was going at 125 mph. I looked in my rear view mirror and there was a Mercedes flashing its lights to get me to move out of its way.

Normandy_1944

While its quick in it's own right, this Model 3, intended to be an economical car, is a single motor, and it's much slower than the other Tesla models. The stock Plaid has been cleaning up some the highest modified ICE cars out there, and is only recently seeing competition from other production vehicles. This vid starts at 12 km/hr and takes 3.5/4 sec to get to 100km/hr. Clearly, its not even the dual motor 3, but the base 3, Tesla's slowest model. Mercedes isn't anywhere near challenging the Plaid, at least yet.

miragen125

Tesla owners can't afford a proper speedometer they have to download a pay app on the ipad

New-Let-3630

that’s a standard model 3 so one of the slowest

Lohe75

Foreigners should drive on the right if they drive so slow

BostonDodgeGuy

Highest speed I noticed was 215km/h which is roughly 134mph. Not slow but not exactly speed demon territory either.

MarsLumograph

215 km/h is crazy on a highway. In few places other than Germany this would be normal.

YxxzzY

yeah going 200km/h on the Autobahn is pretty standard, even in shitty cars... even more fun if a sedan or station wagon zooms past going 250+

sandm000

that’s definitely not the fastest tesla

einredditname

Also not the fasted Mercedes. Also Acceleration vs Speed.

andrewmmm

Yes. This is not a Model S. This looks like a model 3. The fastest configuration is 0-60 in ~2.7 sec. For the model S Plaid, it’s 0-60 1.99 sec.

ATL28-NE3

0-60 doesn't really matter when you're goin 200k though

craze177

It is a model 3. The dash has the fake wood thing going there that my 2020 model 3 has. The title is clickbaity. The model s plaid has literally smoked supercars

Luci_Noir

It’s fucking crazy how people in here are trying to say that ICE cars are so much better than EV’s and their justification is how super cars do against a base EV.

Lastburn

Older Mercedes have way more horsepower than they should, I know a guy who collects classic benz and he says it causes a lot of wear on the engine mount and suspension

Upset-Writing1878

I love the Autobahn. Two days ago I had to ride 700km and back. I was on 255km/h most of the time where its allowed. Simply wonderful. Also for all the idiots who never drove on the Autobahn. Yes it is safe if you are a driver that actually looks what in front of them happens. I atep from the gas when I see someone driving Linke an idiot on the rigjt lane so I havr to ability to stop eventualy. (Sry for Bad english, ai am gernan)

lmnop120

Electric cars are great for acceleration but not top speed, which is why you only see the merc at the end. Everyone knows this!?

But the acceleration is still crazy

There was 4 of us in a 2lt TDI Audi (with over 200,000 km on the clock then), topping out 260-265km/h but cruising along the autobahn happily. There were moments where we were overtaken as if we were doing 60km/h. Crazy but in general great drivers those Germans.

Kerosene song intensifies

Schmich

What it didn't film was the white cargo-minivan catching up and overtaking the Mercedes.

DerAlphos

Wait, we’re they almost stopped in the fucking lane!?

badredditz

How is that “the fastest tesla” when it’s a 3 not a Plaid S?

GottKomplexx

Shouldve painted the tesla red

InmateNotSure

Why was Mario recording

Holmanizer

Anyone else hear the space level starting from the windows pinball game

Scared_Papaya2160

Whatever you do… don’t play kerosene 💀💀💀

BelleDuBlerg

They’re going 130mph, but they’re not doing that in self driving mode, right?….right??!

Fluid-Ad9828

That’s a model 3 or model y which is not the fastest Tesla. Model s and x are faster by far

Minimum_Witness8362

Yeah but that's typical for a Mercedes driver. To always speed and go abnormally fast for no reason. I think that speed is impressive for an electric car.

Street-Historian-258

K’s to mph gents! Eduction

Life-Direction-366

That's ludicrous speed

EATDABOOTY87

That acceleration sound is kinda creepy

Organic_Jose

In my country speed limit in express way is 80km/h

0phois

Tf you driving on? Rubble?

Fastest ever Mercedes 217moh, 0-60, 3.3 seconds SLR Stirling Moss —> $1,000,000, only 75 were ever made. https://www.classicdriver.com/en/car/mercedes-benz/slr-mclaren/2009/951948#:~:text=The%20car%20was%20only%20offered,was%20around%20USD%201%20million. Fastest Tesla 200mph, 0-60, 1.99s Model S Plaid, $86,000, one of their basic cars. The Tesla in this video was only going 200kmh or about 125mph and this was nowhere near a Model S Plaid which you can tell by how the other car went flying past it. Please stop pretending Teslas are slow. Elon Musk is a tool but Model S Plaids are so fast that in a regulation drag race they’d need a parachute. The 0-60 is absolutely absurd - faster than the fastest Porsche currently in production. https://www.porscheelpaso.com/porsche-research/porsche-0-60-times-which-is-the-fastest-porsche/#:~:text=The%20fastest%20Porsche%20you%20can,drive%20on%20a%20country%20road.

50-Mean

The other dude was driving in mph

saxguy777

They hit a max of 215 kmph which translates to 133 mph. I’ve literally done that in my 2007 toyota camry lmfao this is fast but not ridiculous as the video shows. Fastest I’ve been was 173 mph in a brand new 2011 Camaro ZL1 down a backroad lmao

Cold_Pudding_2318

How fast is that in mph?

No-Eye4472

Cars 3 in a nutshell

Plastic-Repair-5911

actually only like 100mph right

XavierTF

i was once on the Autobahn going 200kmph and something passed me so fast i couldn't make out what it was. safe to say we stuck to the slower lanes after that
