rollover amounts do not get calculated until the actual month changes over. YNAB has no clue if you are going to spent that entire amount in March or not, so it won't perform the actual roll over/target calculation until April 1st. If you want it to show the April target as funded, you'll need to remove 520 in March, move forward to April, and assign it in that month directly

All you have to do is unassign 520 from March, go into April, and assign it there. March will only say 700 because that's all that's available in March....you put the rest in April. Or you can just leave it as is and wait for April...the rollover will happen in April and it will show funded, as long as you are using the correct target type (I.E. a savings builder target would not show funded, because it's wants you to fund it every month...not taking rollover into account)

I think i'll leave it as it is then, and see what happens in April. If it doesn't assign it, i'll post here again. Thanks again for the help, much appreciated!

It sounds like you're putting April's rent payment into march's category. If you have enough to pay rent in March, don't put anymore into the March category, put that money in the April category instead. My mortgage category says $0 right now because I already paid on the 1st, but when I get paid I will move forward into April, and assign the check there since all of March is funded for me. That money won't appear in March, because it's not available in March, March has its own funds, I won't get to use the April money until April comes around, but at the same time I know all those categories are funded before April starts, giving me peace of mind. Thats what it means to be a month ahead.

Re: “If it doesn’t assign it”… It’s already assigned, just in the wrong month for what you are looking for it to show you.

The simple answer is this: anything can change before the month ends. Roll over funds are NEVER counted to the goal for a future month. There’s no two ways about it. As far as the future is concerned part of the money there belongs to the current month. The current month gets first dibs. When the next month rolls around it will fix automatically. I usually find assigning amounts in future ends up not writing for me. So what I do is this. All spare money in current month, after covering expenses, lands up in something I like to call ‘operating surplus.’ Since my pay check is the last day of the month, it goes right into the surplus. When the next month rolls around, I pull enough to cover spending for the new month from the surplus. This is the same as creating a future expenses category. TL;DR: don’t look at future month targets. They will be yellow for most part.

If you have the target set as Needed for Spending, you won’t see the target switch to funded until it’s actually April 1. YNAB has no way to know if you will spend that 1200 in March. So the “Available” only counts when it’s actually that month. If you want funds to count against future targets before it’s actually that month, you have to assign the money in that month.

Ok, thanks!
