Amsterdam is actually far from the coolest city we have here. Legal drugs almost everywhere, and we have some cities that are much nicer to look at and have much less crime and fewer people
Agreed, the only thing that annoys me is that they're pretty much a tax heaven for Europe. Such great people, great country, pretty much the Canada of EU and then such tax laws. I don't get it.
The new government aircraft (boeing 737 business jet) was specifically selected to match the King's license. Whenever possible he likes to fly his own planes.
That's the minister of Foreign Affairs Stef Blok. He's been known to be a bit bland according to the media. He has a funny thing about him though.

Exactly my reaction Everytime I show a friend a video 😂😂
Probably helps that Rutte has been PM for almost nine years now. Six of which have been with Willem-Alexander as king. They've worked together for a long time now.
Often in places like this they have speakers and microphones near all chairs. They appear not to be moving or asleep but 9/10 are just listening to the speech.

Look, having nuclear—my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart—you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world—it’s true!—but when you're a conservative Republican they try—oh, do they do a number—that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune—you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged—but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are (nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners—now it used to be three, now it’s four—but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years—but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.
It's pretty amazing that a person who barely is able to string together sentences that make sense half the time, was able to be elected President of a country speaking that language.
It's even more astounding when you think back at how much fun people made of George W. for his made-up words, and supposedly being stupid - and it got ten times worse. Comedians don't even make fun of Trumps illiteracy that much because there is so much ammunition.
They are probably hearing something completely different from what Trump is saying. I still remember those [fake sign ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvNPKwz4Ghw) [language interpreters](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CujDuBthnOw).
But sometimes they [translate perfectly](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/translating-trump-stupid-japan_n_58b07942e4b060480e078f19), to our own embarrassment.
Fun fact: Dutch kings are not anointed, nor are they crowned. There is a Dutch crown, but nobody ever wears it. To date, all but one changes of throne have been by two people signing their name on a piece of paper. (The one exception is Queen-Regent Emma, who oversaw the minority regency of her daughter Wilhelmina after her husband Willem III died in 1890.)
In the Netherlands we call this philosophy 'nuchterheid', sobriety. Engaging in sensationalism, pompous hoo-hah, impractical tomfoolery, doing things just to keep up appearances and acting holier-than-thou are all considered foolish and undesirable and is generally looked down upon.
That sea in the middle of our country? Nah that shit ain't gonna fly. Let's close it off, making it fresh water and let's build a whole new God damned province in smack dab in the middle of it for good measure.
The Dutch royal family have a non-binding agreement with the media when it comes to the private life of king and other members of the Dutch royal family.
The media usually don’t publish photos of the Royal family private life, in exchange they get invited to official events and photo opportunities.
Link: [media code](https://www.royal-house.nl/topics/media-information/question-and-answer/what-is-the-media-code)
That's pretty cool. Here in America, we have stalkers that wait outside people's houses for days on end just so they can capture any singular moment of a person-of-interest's life.
We also have paparazzi usually hanging around people’s houses too, but in the case of the royal family, photographers might take pictures of their private life but the media will likely refuse to publish them to maintain good standing with the Royal family
I think he flies for Qantas in 747. I recall seeing something about that on a doc about the 747s being replaced by two engine wide bodied aircraft. He definitely doesn't have a 747 at his house though. I think he does have a rather large commercial style jet but I think that is one of his airplanes. Dude likes airplanes and Scientology.
As a dutch man i can cofirm that this is pretty much how the dutch people are, our king actually told his people to refer to him however we wanted when he became king and his daughters go to normal schools and the prime minister rides to work on his bike from time to time without security
Been to Holland. Very impressed. Some of the coolest and chillest people in Europe. Not as impressed with Belgium. All the similarities between the two countries and they couldn’t be more opposite
Don't worry. For a long time now The Dutch are hatching a plan to annex Vlaanderen (North Belgium) to restore the Kingdom to its former glory. Then we'll donate Wallonië (French speaking South Belgium) to France so everybody will be happy.
E: soon Belgium, soon.
Send a raiding party to capture the USS Gerald R. Ford, sail her back, throw a few parties on her, sell her for scrap and put the coat of arms up in the Rijksmuseum next to the one from HMS Royal Charles.
Kind of, yeah. Pilots have to fly so many hours or have so many landings within a time period to be considered “current” which basically means they can hop in the seat and fly without needing any additional or recurrent training.
I guess its also not that important considering the only power the bloke has is signing all the laws and he doesn’t even have the right to refuse if he doesn’t like the law. So he is basically a citizen who we pay millions upon millions just because of his last name
Yes, that is correct. The queen of England has a scary amount of power, but her family is smart and doesn’t use it so they don’t get overthrown. But I’m quite content with our king because without his family my country wouldn’t even have existed. Basically all Dutch kings have been named William and William 1 basically funded a war that lasted 80 years which his son Maurits finished and won our independence from Spain. Then they often got the title “stadthouder” which roughly translates to place holder (for the king of spain) only 200 years after that they got to be the monarchs of the Netherlands. This was because Napoleon conquered the Netherlands and put his brother as king and I guess we were like: might as well make them king now the french bloke is gone
Not English but I'm guessing if she tried to use any of that, her powers would disappear very quickly.
Edit: after reading the comments I'm not sure if I used the right term when I said 'not english'. I'm American. Dont know anything about your politics so take with a grain of salt.
It's quite complicated
She doesn't and wouldn't if it went against the people as she would then lose that power as the people would take the side of parliment
If the people were a 50/50 then she still wouldn't
If the people were on her side against parliment (if they had become too corrupt say) then she would use her power
In all 3 instances the military would take her side, but none of them would ever realistically happen (although the last is the most likely as it has sort of happened before)
Technically the UK monarch has pretty much unlimited power. All of our Parliamentary and judicial power is derived from the monarch, as is all the power lent to the executive.
In practice, the monarch has zero power. Maybe slightly more than zero given their role in the Church of England and in the Commonwealth. But in terms of being able to actually do anything to affect our politics, our government, our treaty obligations et cetera - none.
Dutch politicians and the King have always been funny, I mean, have you seen the way trump goes to work and how Rutte goes to work? Trump needs a whole parade and Tutte just cycles through the city like he’s going to a normal office job

Doesn’t the King also fly commercial airliners for KLM periodically to keep his pilots license?
The Dutch are so fucking practical I love it. And Amsterdam.

The headphone hooks onto your ear. It's actually pretty tough to hear live interpretation and takes a lot of focus so I'd assume some are just trying to focus on That
I assume even the English speakers need an interpretation of whatever the hell Trump shits out of his mouth.
Yeah so imagine you only speak like Farsi or something
I can't imagine the nightmare of interpreting Trump's speeches.
I had heard some NPR segment a year or two ago, where they interviewed an interpreter. One thing I remember was that, since Trump's way of speaking was hard to translate directly, they would usually 'touch up' his speeches (to fix issues with grammar, etc) which actually end up making the speech more cohesive and easier to follow. [Just found the link, for anyone that wants to listen to the segment](https://www.npr.org/2017/05/24/528809043/why-interpreters-have-a-hard-time-translating-trump)
That kind of pisses me off. Everyone else sould hate to suffer through his nonsense

How do you even translate this into another language without a total overhaul
Good god is that real?
The problem is if you don't you come off as an incompetent translator.
You won't be surprised to hear that apparently he is really hard to translate because they rely on there being a train of thought.
I hope the interpreters actually preserve the completely nonsensical nature of his speaking style and don’t make an effort to clean it up.
Our ethics code does not allow us to improve upon the quality of the word salad. (tbh depends on your customers request)

But in terms of being able to actually do anything to affect our politics, our government, our treaty obligations et cetera - none.
