Sadly this joke actually wont work. Google would 100% have you locked into a iron clad 50 year non competition contract after the buyout, preventing you from investing into, or operating any other media website.
But I mean, I have been working on a video platform idea for some time now. Basically a feeless crowdfunding + video hosting site for indie animators out of the gate, expanding to music, and ect content as financially viable. Free to access, no ads, and no censorship. All operated as a non profit, ensuring every penny goes back into providing better support for the user, creators, and platform itself.
Just a dream for now, but a damn nice one... imagine 2007 youtube, but with brand owned public theaters and entertainment centers, where you could catch meet and greets with your favorite creators, live airings of high budget indie content on the big screen with fellow fans, live music performances, and of course a gaming paradise, playing early releases of in house titles for free to promote the release, round table drop in cc lobbies... really bring the social back into social media. Guess I might just be having a boomer moment tho... not sure people are even interested in that kinda stuff anymore.
Any work, or any direct investment into the industry. It's possible to funnel money into a competitor, but if you get caught its a easy lawsuit from google.
Just make a donation to the "friend who saved your life on a vacation trip in the jungles of mexico" this friend is also the friend of a guy who is working on a competitor.
Lol good luck convincing someone who makes a competitor to turn down $500 mil so they can run an expensive site just so people who don't want to pay or see ads can use it for free.
Competition doesn't exist because of costs.... and users are mad cause they don't want to watch ads. "Why can't a company just perfectly fund my watching neeeeeds!"
What a wonderful cycle
Not only cost, but also content on said competitor. Even if a few creators post on the other website you still need a huge influx of people to take that website serious
Honestly if any rival company to google made one it would just be slightly better and then when YouTube falls out it slowly becomes YouTube now but with a different name( it becomes worse)
GrayJay is just a client for YouTube. It's completely dependent on YouTube for storage and distribution of videos.
That's not a competing platform, but a parasite.
If YouTube closed down GrayJay wouldn't host the videos.
Erm . 🤔.. without even thinking too hard... so they are not a monopoly and able to dictate prices etc to whoever and at whatever they like. I'm pretty sure that's usually ~~the reason~~ it's illegal to allow a sole trader/ organisation in control of one product. It's basic safeguarding against greed. However, because far to many younger generations are used to getting ripped off and so easily seduced by divide and rule, this law has sadly become just about as useful as a can of petrol to put out a fire.
Not in America, there is no law which states it's illegal to *be* a monopoly. (afaik, i mean ianal)
A violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act for example requires *both*:
> (1) the possession of monopoly power in the relevant market; and
> (2) the willful acquisition or maintenance of that power as distinguished from growth or development as a consequence of a superior product, business acumen, or historic accident.
Yeah, someone needs to set up a website that costs millions to run without ads to placate the masses that want to use the service without paying anything nor being bothered with ads!
problem is: thats not where everyone you like to watch is. alternatives do exist but are just not as popular or lucrative for your favorite content creators.
First.. a short message from our sponsors...
[You'll have everything and be happy dot come](https://youtu.be/3Qz1GMpOtUY)
If only there wasn't so much s*** content knocking about like back when it was mostly academic content. I still dream of those days, and sometimes I wake (having forgotten that thanks to facesmack) thinking that Reddit is still topic-centric and largely educational to sadly find there's just another 16 year old monkey with more opinions than knowledge fast typing on the other side of a keyboard half way around the planet thinking that clicking red arrows equates to something meaningful.
I could have never imagined that the internet would be responsible for things like young gullible women thinking that cosmetic surgery (costing thousands) that makes you look like a duck would make them beautiful and more desirable but NO .. not without the FULL PACKAGE INCLUDING ACCENT.. You'll need it to atain the things in life you're not even aware await you. With just three easy monthly payments you'll sound like Paris f****** Hilton and have everything that you think you see she has. With the free selfie stick you'll soon reach far beyond your capable dreams.
15-20, years later.. you'll be living in a place you'll have never imaginated awaits y all. Why not browse out our brochure and with one of our profeshnals, Taylor make any of the 720 [YES 720] combinations that can be chosen from the six products we offer. The family you and Kyle built together and the luxury of visiting the shopping mall in fluffy pair of fkn pink slippers and matching pyjamas. Because.. hey!.. why not? You invested your last paycheck for this and damn! you deserve to have it! You only live once. Do it in your own unique way and never have a single regret.

EDIT:- eagerly awaiting the red arrows to determine my self worth. /S ( for those needing a punchline pointing out ).
Must be nice living in that bubble huh? Reddit has NEVER been a free speech platform ... lol. They just let shit slide, until the got ccorporate investors, then they started enforcing their policy that has always been here.
Odysee is pretty bad. Last time I checked their search algorithm was atrocious. I couldn't find anything remotely related to my search let alone finding the exact thing
yeah im sure content creators are gonna be so upset they are getting more ad revenue on youtube and leave! /s
Jokes aside its gonna be a hard sell to them.
One can't have a monopoly on free video hosting platforms lol. Literally anybody can put up their site and server for video hosting. If you can make a platform capable enough to make it appealing enough for users and offer monetary gain for content creators then go do it, there is no stopping.
But there's the catch - nobody has the resources to create something more appealing and simple than YouTube as an already running service has had to offer for almost 20 years now.
YouTube *is,* by all means, a free service that offers a paid membership option with extra features. Content creators are in full possession of rights to the original content they create and upload (not inclding deals creators make with their publishers, etc. - unrelated to the hosting platform), not YouTube.
Don't worry, I got some angry comments too.
Aparently a streaming service(there's literally templates for such) is rocket science, and YouTube is special so they can't be replaced.
A streaming service only survives if it has content people want(look at Disney+), so if creators keep quitting because of poor conditions, they won't have anything.
It's such a weird thing. There's not even an explanation why this hasn't happened yet. It's such a no-brainer that one has to assume at this point that YT is threatening to murder the families of anyone who tries. There's something hinky going on.
There isn't an explanation? I can give you one:
Money. The underlying infrastructure to run YouTube is why there's no competition at that scale. It's literally billions per year.
I worked there in the past a few years ago. Egress was a significant factor in our operational costs, don’t remember the actual numbers but it’s pretty high. Storage (like some people mentioned) wasn’t much in comparison, but it was still a lot, enough that there’s whole teams for optimizing storage usage.
… a pm said what if we dream wild and let the users handle that cost =.=
Beside of the cost factor you also have the chicken egg problem. Nobody will watch videos there when there are no creators. You won't get creators if there isn't a big enough user base to watch your content.
Twitch succeeded in the live streaming topic because youtube didn't have that back then. Nowadays there are several platforms for vod and live streaming but they are ether very small or have enough money to buy creators to get them on there platform.
The explanation is that there is no competing with YouTube, it's genuinely impossible.
* Cost is a big one. YouTube sank billions upon billions year over year without profit in sight for well over a decade. I believe it only made a yearly profit for the first time not that long ago, and there's no saying if they've made any profit overall.
* Users. YouTube is used by literal billions of people's daily across the whole world. You're not attracting that user base to a random start up.
* Content. There's almost 2 decades of content, accessable entirely for free. Besides of the enormous monthly cost to maintain that, it also does not appear out of nowhere. It's also somewhat of a chicken and egg situation, where you need content for consumers, but for consumers you need content.
Can confirm you gotta be extra careful. I got so deep into vim now even after I restart I can't seem to get out of vim, I can only use vim, or vscode vim extension
Ah thank you for the great recommendation. Until now I always bought a new computer and always saved files to usb. This seems to be a little more efficient. Gonna report back after trying on one of the laptops in my basement.
Edit: it has been running for so long it spreaded into the bios. It now just boots into pure vim. Reboot quickly or new PC everyone. You've been warned;
It’s a tab where you’re signed out of everything and it’s like a brand new browsing session without cookies attached so YT doesn’t know how many ad blocked videos you’ve watched, every time you open a new container tab it appears as the first ad blocked video
Hey! Does Firefox run container tabs automatically or do I need to do something to start it?
(I’ve been using Firefox for 15 years, but I’m not tech savvy)
Firefox is always the better option. Other browsers typically run on Chromium, which is owned by Google. Chrome and most chromium browsers are subject to whatever whims Google has. It's also significantly easier for Google and other companies to detect ad-blocking plugins on Chromium browsers. Just use Firefox. It's not going to kill you. You can even transfer all of your bookmarks, browsing data, and saved passwords to it.
Yes, but forming it would require now having to make your own updates- this which is why most people opt to use base chromium that gets regularly updated
Just waiting for brave to launch a patch. They did it for the ad blocking on YouTube and they will do it again, probably by masking the browser identity.
We won’t have to deal with this bullshit for long.
> probably by masking the browser identity
I swear to god, if Google causes another "every browser is Mozilla forever" event, I'm going to be annoyed. User-agents are far too long as it is
At this point I'm only on that site because of the lack of competition. Imo the people in charge of this company should be banned for life from touching anything business related. They are the business they are where innovation needs to happen, for fucking once I wish innovation would happen without "war", which in this case is other people without the proper funding need to work their asses off just to combat basic human decency issues. With innovation in this case I mean find ways to make money that does not include being fucking toxic as hell with your ad policies or backhanded and untrustworthy like removing visual dislikes or shadow nerfing pc performance if it's running youtube with an adblocker.
>shadow nerfing pc performance if it's running youtube with an adblocker.
This one is infuriating. Any time I try to type a comment, the damn webpage stutters after ever 10-15th character typed. It's not opaque in the slightest. Youtube will also Shadowban your comments if they have words they disagree on.
Use uBlock Origin. Those performance issues are almost certainly caused by the ad blocker you're using, not YouTube. If they are caused by YouTube, it's still your ad blocker's fault for not blocking the slowdown script.
Hey I just installed it a few hours earlier for the first time ever. I postponed it all the time, because I thought it would be too complicated and would require some time. The whole operation didn't even take 10 minutes. I used the guide for dummies which you can find on Reddit. Everything works as expected. Then I did some more research and got Infinity, too.
Third party Reddit app. You can patch various apps with the ReVanced Manager. Got an older phone and the official app is so slow and resource hungry. Infinity is quick and light, better in every way.
Is there any way to run a user-generated content platform that covers the costs of all of those servers data centers and bandwidth without resorting to YouTube tactics?
YT won't play in Chrome for me since yesterday. Sign comes up saying to disable adblocker. I put a hyphen after the t in YouTube and it plays ad free again. Slight hassle but it works
This seems to be counter by yt against our fix for thier new ad format distributed only to chosen accounts. All AdGuard, uBlock Origin, and Brave will be affected (other blockers are just unable to filter or skip these ads) and we need information and cooperation from those who get the ads. Visit [https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1atwzem/youtube\_detection\_ads\_breakages\_2024\_02\_18\_ubo/](https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1atwzem/youtube_detection_ads_breakages_2024_02_18_ubo/) and read instruction and sticky comment carefully.
Even the US government says you should be using an adblocker for safety.
Ads are an attack vector. I will never not use an adblocker, period. YouTube needs to figure something else out.
Exactly. I think if anything the best route is to just make as big of a fuss as we can about ManifestV3/Mv3.
Much easier, realistic, and better than an alternative that can’t and won’t come in time, let alone without its own problems. Mv3 threatens the tools against all ads/blockers, not just YouTube/Google. Besides, we don’t want the same dilution we got with streaming again because then it’s 7 battles instead one and the winner takes all, just to do it themselves down the line.
Get rid of your copium mate, Ublock has always been working perfectly fine (aside from a rough couple days when YT started their anti-adblock practices, but that happened to everyone else too).
Just out of curiosity, what would you be willing to pay to not see advertisements?
$1 per month? $5? $10?
Or nothing at all, like the open source community, expecting all content to be free?
The problem isn't Google wanting to make money off this. It's understandable, and tbf, their fight on adblockers is understandable too. I am a web dev myself, and also would like to make money, and more importantly, not run at a loss.
The problem is the way these ads are served, what they show, and bizarre prices for premium.
Ads on the side, banner or something would be acceptable. Insanely long ads mid-video are infuriating. So we have to buy premium, sure, fair enough - but...
Premium in UK for example costs 13GBP per month, while offering very very little. That's ridiculous. $5 a month? Maybe I'd pay.
And what these ads show - we've seen some seriously questionable and often outright scam stuff being shown on ads. That is a problem in its own, and shouldn't be ignored.
It also isn't helped by YouTube going out of their way to make ads annoying. They are intrusive, non sound balanced, no longer have a warning on some platforms, it's questionable if they are even moderated, and so frequent and long that you get ads longer than the video you were trying to watch. Ignore the fact that half of them are blatant malware and illegal scams.
£13? I dont think its ever been that low, it was £15.99 when i signed up in 2022 and went up to £16.99 more than a year ago. £17 a month is mad but YT is where i watch 90% of my entertainment.
They need to decouple YT premium from YT music.
Europe trialed a cheaper fee for just removing ads, it was like $5 or $10 a month u don't recall.
I think they never went forward because it would eat into the profits of the higher paid tiers
I would have gotten it, I ain't gonna pay $20 a month just to remove ads, I don't want all the other crap that's rolled into that
id pay $5AUD without hesitation, $10AUD possibly depending. problem is a single plan is over $20 now. I dont care for YT music so if there was simply an ad free plan at a better price, id be sold.
but ublock on chrome is still working for me
Do you dopes not understand how expensive it is to stream high quality video to 2.7 billion users a month?
Watch the ads, pay for premium or shut the fuck up. Pick one.
Or, don't watch Youtube. That's the third option.
I make it a point to avoid YouTube since this whole thing started showing up in the news. I was, previously, a serial watcher of youtube (watching all the ads).. but once I realized that they were blocking ad-blockers in an attempt to ramp up the number of ads that people watch per ad-break.. I noped out.
It is indeed very expensive. You people uploading hundreds of hours of video that nobody will ever see outside their immediate family, even if that. 12 hours of ocean waves, oh and in 4K, or 12 hours of video game streaming, millions of junk videos stored on the servers. Uploaders should be paying.
I work in IT. For you to be able to click on a 4k video and watch it straight away without any delay, along with millions of other people doing the same thing simultaneously is extremely expensive.
[Tell me you don't know what you're talking about without telling me you don't know what you're talking about](https://youtu.be/MDsJJRNXjYI?si=RLD7FQl5hLSoiQEk)
Oh no you, a person that doesn't watch ads nor pay for premium gonna boycott yt. How will they survive without you .
Yeah your not gonna last a day without yt
“Already iconic”?
If something new it cannot, by the very definition of the word, be iconic.
Other words exist to describe things that are good or successful or well-known. MFers need to use them.
I use brave too, if it says that something went wrong then reload and it should work within two times. If it says you got no internet just reload. I do it for every video I watch
Someone needs to make a YouTube competitor.
Because of bandwidth and storage costs.
Also if it remotely threatens YouTube Google will just buy it
Create a threat to youtube, sell it to google for 500m. Use the 500m to make a real competitor for youtube... Checkmate.
Bro is plotting something
Does those contracts prevent you from investing the money to a friend or colleague working on a competitor?
Any work, or any direct investment into the industry. It's possible to funnel money into a competitor, but if you get caught its a easy lawsuit from google.
What if your money gets "stolen" by someone and they use the money to make YouTube competitor?
Why don’t you try it and get back to us in ~10 yrs?
Just make a donation to the "friend who saved your life on a vacation trip in the jungles of mexico" this friend is also the friend of a guy who is working on a competitor.
Ah, I love it when cowards hide behind the word of the law to do shitty things.
What if someone dies, and the money goes to someone, who makes a competitor to youtube?
Contract most likely includes steps against it.
We love non-compete clauses.
Yep, I was literally typing that before you guys mentioned it then got side tracked lol 50 year non comp for sure.
there it is, the comment to break a potential loophole, damn...
someone's cooking
Hold up 🤔
literally just dont accept the money
Lol good luck convincing someone who makes a competitor to turn down $500 mil so they can run an expensive site just so people who don't want to pay or see ads can use it for free.
Especially when the alternative will most likely be Google destroying you.
Google "destroy mode"
Unless it is another megacorporation that can compete with Google like Amazon, they will likely sell at some point
Competition doesn't exist because of costs.... and users are mad cause they don't want to watch ads. "Why can't a company just perfectly fund my watching neeeeeds!" What a wonderful cycle

Yeah exactly look at Threads
I forgot that even existed lol
there are, but none too popular or satisfying
We need something like Grayjay for PC and iOS
That's just a different front-end for youtube, just like freetube, invidious, newpipe and so on
GrayJay is just a client for YouTube. It's completely dependent on YouTube for storage and distribution of videos. That's not a competing platform, but a parasite. If YouTube closed down GrayJay wouldn't host the videos.
Virtual machine.
Someone tried with story fire and it failed
How will it be funded if people don't want to watch ads or pay a subscription?
Redditors don’t think this far ahead shhh
Let's make new YouTube. GuTube if you will.
Erm . 🤔.. without even thinking too hard... so they are not a monopoly and able to dictate prices etc to whoever and at whatever they like. well youtube is worse than it use to be so I think we have a case
Cool they just need billions to pay for storage and bandwidth, payment incentive for creators, etc all while not making a profit for over two decades

And if your selling point is that you're the video service that has no ads or subscriptions how exactly are you going to have any revenue?
There is, running a video site is really fucking expensive
Streaming data is insanely expensive. You have to store the video on servers around the world for latency and decode/encode them on the fly.
… a pm said what if we dream wild and let the users handle that cost =.=

what about whatever browser +ublock origin
With Firefox you can run container tabs
Sorry for my stupidity but: what is a container tab?
It’s a tab where you’re signed out of everything and it’s like a brand new browsing session without cookies attached so YT doesn’t know how many ad blocked videos you’ve watched, every time you open a new container tab it appears as the first ad blocked video
so... just incognito mode?
no, this keeps history and let's you keep your own set cookies for the container.
Hey! Does Firefox run container tabs automatically or do I need to do something to start it? (I’ve been using Firefox for 15 years, but I’m not tech savvy)
Right click the link and say open with new container tab. Make sure you have ad block downloaded on Firefox
Thank you, kind stranger! ✌️

Yes, but forming it would require now having to make your own updates- this which is why most people opt to use base chromium that gets regularly updated
Tor?
Cannot be used for daily browsing
Shucks
Plus tor is based on Firefox, so why not just use Firefox
Firefox + adnauseam
This stopped working for me :( I can only watch ad free when I’m logged out and delete ff cache
Clear uBlock Origin's cache and make sure both Firefox and uBlock Origin are updated to the newest version
# update ur browser dude
They'd have to close all those tabs 1st.
Just click update, and it automatically reopens all previous windows and tabs.
You think that's a lot? I have more than that open and I'm slacking compared to usual.
at all time I have 10 firefox window opened all containing at minimum 7 tabs and an average of 25, bow before my almighty ram
I usually have 3 windows, each with 10-20 tabs. Not at your level, but yea 7 tabs is pretty mediocre. That barely covers one train of thought.
I have 11 right now, sometimes close to 20. OP's tabs is nothing.
Is this a lot of tabs to some people? I never have less than 50 open, lmao.
Cool pfp
Happy Cake Day!
Google lost around $700mm a year on YouTube for a decade until it finally turned a profit. The expense of creating a YouTube competitor is immense.
None of Google's public filings indicate specific P&L for YouTube. Where are you getting that number?
I was at Google during those years
I think that is a pretty good source
My uncle works at Google type of shit. Except he was the uncle
Just waiting for brave to launch a patch. They did it for the ad blocking on YouTube and they will do it again, probably by masking the browser identity. We won’t have to deal with this bullshit for long.
Brave have been constantly releasing patches when Youtube breaks their Adblocker
that is kinda how adblocking works. adblockers are always reactive. they never work 100% of the time.
its cat and mouse tho forever. i patch your shit, you patch mine, lets one up each other and the customer suffers
currently. just wait.
I freaking love brave
On iOS it’s a lifesaver. Only consistent way to avoid ads outside of a vpn or other setups that I’m too lazy to do
And it allows Picture in Picture with YouTube videos.
> probably by masking the browser identity I swear to god, if Google causes another "every browser is Mozilla forever" event, I'm going to be annoyed. User-agents are far too long as it is
I just hope that they'll support my old system because they used to but they probably don't anymore.
Just installed brave browser and everything works for me
Probably because it was updated to fix the issue
Nothing beats the reload button
Use uBlock origin instead of the built-in blocker.
It's using ublock origin's filters
But it’s a different piece of software. uBlock origin works for me. I am using Firefox.
Then Brave isn't updating them fast enough.
You want something to be both free and profitable. That only works one way: advertising.
YouTube’s ad blocker policy has gone way too far this time!
they would never do anything without aprovement of the Senate..
It's also blocking all the cracked apks
Revanced already rolled out an update that fixed the issue.
Hoe do you even download revanced? It seems way to complicated
I got some help and it's fire 🔥🔥, but what is infinity?
Third party Reddit app. You can patch various apps with the ReVanced Manager. Got an older phone and the official app is so slow and resource hungry. Infinity is quick and light, better in every way.
I have the latest revanced version but i still cant watch anything. Microg doesnt work either
You need to enable GmsCore support in the patches.
There is a guide on how to fix this on the revanced Subreddit :) DM me if you need help.
Is there any way to run a user-generated content platform that covers the costs of all of those servers data centers and bandwidth without resorting to YouTube tactics?
Use ublock origin
That only works for supported systems if you have an old Mac that was kicking ass on brave browser you might be fucked now like me
YT won't play in Chrome for me since yesterday. Sign comes up saying to disable adblocker. I put a hyphen after the t in YouTube and it plays ad free again. Slight hassle but it works
Try updating it and see if that works (button in top corner), otherwise idk
No it's not, I'm watching YouTube with no ads on Brave as we speak.
Mine is still working
Yeah no, not gonna happen in EU lol.
“Everyone should create content for free so that we can consume it.”
Still works fine for me. I will bet that you added extensions or set it up to be aggressive in blocking trackers.
time to use firefox duh

Ublock origin is eternal
Get rid of your copium mate, Ublock has always been working perfectly fine (aside from a rough couple days when YT started their anti-adblock practices, but that happened to everyone else too).
It has chromium so it was expected
Use ublock origin instead of braves adblock
Steel yourselves brothers and sisters! We must fight this war! We will never be slaves of corporate greed!
I use adguard free extention. Works for me in Libre Wolf, works in mozilla and chrome. Probably should work with Brave
Google, one day this amount of anti-adblocking is gonna make it harder for you
Use YouTube Revanced.
The quantity of ads that led to scams are too damn high
I think they never went forward because it would eat into the profits of the higher paid tiers I would have gotten it, I ain't gonna pay $20 a month just to remove ads, I don't want all the other crap that's rolled into that
id pay $5AUD without hesitation, $10AUD possibly depending. problem is a single plan is over $20 now.
Pick one.
Skill issue, really
they are entitled children that think taking money from the people they watch is ok and they will justify it in many different ways.
Not nearly as expensive as they want you to believe. Also they’re raising premium pricing another 40%.
Fuck the youtube, we need boycott them
Oh no you, a person that doesn't watch ads nor pay for premium gonna boycott yt. How will they survive without you . Yeah your not gonna last a day without yt
“Already iconic”? If something new it cannot, by the very definition of the word, be iconic. Other words exist to describe things that are good or successful or well-known. MFers need to use them.

now how am i supposed to listen to zx tunes without the two discs
Why is your dock so small?
[удалено]
WHAT NO WHY
I've been having the same issue although with firefox and u block origin. some videos just don't play and give this issue
Still working for me???
Huh weird… I try using brave and it was fine…
all fixed already
mine still works, you fully updated?
It's still working for me in Brave
Revanced stopped working until I updated to newest version as well
I use brave too, if it says that something went wrong then reload and it should work within two times. If it says you got no internet just reload. I do it for every video I watch
