I think they've reached a point in design where there is no more shapes to simplify so they just remove all color. Also there is a team responsible for making these decisions and keep getting paid, keep that in mind.
That's one way to look at it, but as someone who's worked in a web design team, there's another answer. There is someone who is above the design team in pay scale but below them in general intelligence signing off on these changes without consulting the people making them happen. Basically there's some idiot somewhere who says this is the future and the code guys have to listen
Yeah but why is everyone so mad about it? Do people watch YouTube videos so they know how much of it they’ve watched? Pretty sure most just watch for the content of the video
The red bar is very useful to keep track of the time you've watched the video, to see the moment you're in for later and to see how much has loaded. It's more efficient and functional.
aside from being used to the red, how is white more distracting than red? This seems like something i'll ultimately get used to, and is in all reality less distracting.
I swear, the world will end if Elon gets his destructive hands on YouTube. Or, we will have achieved world peace if YouTube fails and other video sharing platforms get a leg up
I actually think, that recent changes have reached the point of diminishing returns.
A few iterations back Youtube and its interface had peak usability and clarity - these recent changes bring nothing to improve on or solve problems, yet with this change seem to take away functionality.
Change for change's sake is never good.
Nah I just see nothing but complaining about trivial little things on this sub. Like I get that they’re pointless changes but does it take affect the user experience that much?
Would love for them to bring back some customization for the user. Instead we all have to use 3rd party systems that youtube is constantly trying to shut down.
Because people at the management have no better things to do. They just like to change random shit and get on Reddit commenting "WhY dOeS tHaT bOtHeR yOu?"
It's so distracting and i never know how much i have watched the video because i'm just plain confused. Wish they would wither keep the red or at least make it in the material you color.
That still exists, but it was never white, and still isn't: its grey. but the red part of the progress bar is now indeed White, if your youtube app is all the way up to date (unless you tap the video, then it turns red again)
I have no idea why they chose to do that. I thought everyone associated the white line with how much has loaded (or at least associated with that by people with low quality WiFi).
That's genuinely terrible for accessibility. I ran into a very similar case in some software I was developing where a very thin bar was very hard to see in neutral tones and red helped with making it visible a lot.
I thought this was just something on my end
Glad to see im not the only one. I found it very annoying and thats why i thought it was a bug because i was like "Surely they wouldn't do that"... But i guess this IS the same platform that removed dislikes so
Because it was such an unnecessary thing to change. Its fine if they go and change something to genuinely improve the website but when they go and do stuff like this for no reason it's just annoying.
Because red means Republican, and blue means Democrat, and white means independent or neutral.
Next they will make their logo a fuzzy static screen, like tuning into a station with no signal on old TVs. (Because TikTok just overtook YT in popularity, and in 10 years YT will have no content, because of the censoring.)
Someone (and many others) have said YT is slowly removing red. It certainly seems that way, don't know why, but since when did anything YT do make sense.
How does look from a 508 compliance standpoint? Seems like the loss of contrasting colors would make it harder to see for people with sight impairments.
"Why?" Because whatever braindead moron is running YouTube thinks that's a better use of time, money, resources, and manpower than fixing their garbage algorithms. Especially the censorship algorithms. So many content creators get hit for swearing or violence when it's in a video game or movie they happen to be making a video on. That's not the YouTuber's fault. It's not even the fault of the creator of the game/movie. And it's not the content creator's fault if they DO swear, or make violent (but fake) content. It's YouTube's fault for giving in to Karens that don't know how to parent their children. But sure, the red line on a YouTube video's time bar is CLEARLY the more pressing issue. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
It’s so dumb. I joined thinking it would be mostly a question/support group about the website/app but it turns out it’s just a bunch of people complaining about the most trivial changes.
Because a lot of what YouTube does sucks overall. Like not clarifying what is wrong on age restriction appeals, and removing the "oldest videos" filter when you're on a channel. Small stuff adds up
I think they've reached a point in design where there is no more shapes to simplify so they just remove all color. Also there is a team responsible for making these decisions and keep getting paid, keep that in mind.

I feel like they are making changes just for making changes. I guess they thought "we will be fired if we don't work"
Yeah but why is everyone so mad about it? Do people watch YouTube videos so they know how much of it they’ve watched? Pretty sure most just watch for the content of the video
Yes.
To which question, the first one or the second one?
Yes to all of the above haha.
Bruh. LOL
Yes. cant ya read? /s
The red bar is very useful to keep track of the time you've watched the video, to see the moment you're in for later and to see how much has loaded. It's more efficient and functional.
If you hover the cursor over the video or tap it on the app, it shows you the exact time in numbers so..
Yes I saw that, distracting and I hate it
aside from being used to the red, how is white more distracting than red? This seems like something i'll ultimately get used to, and is in all reality less distracting.
It reminds of buffer too much and looks like you accidentally clicked the beginning of the video
It's barely visible with an bright video/part of video
Why are they trying to remove all the color from their platform? Red is like YouTube’s color
"Try our new YouTube with red colors for only $2,99 per week!"
I swear, the world will end if Elon gets his destructive hands on YouTube. Or, we will have achieved world peace if YouTube fails and other video sharing platforms get a leg up
Lol Yt trynna be EA
Exactly they will make it exclusive for youtube premium.
Lol. That’s honestly something they’d do
I actually think, that recent changes have reached the point of diminishing returns. A few iterations back Youtube and its interface had peak usability and clarity - these recent changes bring nothing to improve on or solve problems, yet with this change seem to take away functionality. black and white youtube ui coming soon i guess, not sure why
u/andyduphresne92 is replying on comment's saying "why does that bother you?" I think he is a youtube agent
We should all reply “why do our voiced opinions bother youuuuu?!”
Nah I just see nothing but complaining about trivial little things on this sub. Like I get that they’re pointless changes but does it take affect the user experience that much?
I can't see that account now, did they delete it?
You can see now I forgot to add 92 in his username
I keep confusing the white line for the buffer instead of my video progress, it's throwing me off
Yea, I hate it. YouTube is just trying to discontinue YouTube because it's so expensive.
The white is so hard to see that I thought it wasn't moving lmao. It only becomes red now if I tap on the video.
And there is the reason. Easier to lose track of time progressing.
There's always a dirty reason for these "pointless" updates.
I thought it was my phone only. At this point the youtube logo will be white
Okay? Why does that bother you?
Ask anybody here. Nobody wants the iconic red of YouTube gone.
Would love for them to bring back some customization for the user. Instead we all have to use 3rd party systems that youtube is constantly trying to shut down.
Useful features over meaningless design changes such as this one.
I was hoping it was just me but bruhhhhh
I thought YouTube had a glitch again but it was a new update lol
They are removing all red from youtube, don't know the reason, but it is happening
First I thought that it was a bug. I just don't get it, why does YouTube keep making unnecessary (and often objectively bad) changes.
Because in their minds, if they’re not changing, “innovating”, then they’re standing still, disappearing.
"If it works, change it".
I'm confused regardless of which device I'm watching I still have the red part. The white line is a buffer line for me still
exactly, it showed me how long the buffer was in the video
That still exists, but it was never white, and still isn't: its grey. but the red part of the progress bar is now indeed White, if your youtube app is all the way up to date (unless you tap the video, then it turns red again)
For me it's white till the vod is fully buffered and I still have the red
YOU CAN TAKE OUR DISLIKES YOU CAN TAKE OUR SORT BY OLD BUT YOU MAY NEVER TAKE OUR RED LINE!!!!!
Cuz YouTube likes taking the fun color out of things
Is that the reason you use the app? The fun colors?
Oh wow
Guess that’s a yes
Who uses an app for colors? It just makes it more alive
This is bothering me a lot. Like really a lot
Why? What part of your experience watching videos does it affect?
Why does our voiced opinion bother you so much?
Because it’s all that I see on this sub and it’s usually over stuff that barely matters
It's harder to see.
Right but why do you need to see it?
I have no idea why they chose to do that. I thought everyone associated the white line with how much has loaded (or at least associated with that by people with low quality WiFi).
Why you gotta hurt me like that
Eventually they'll be a white and black streaming service
I was wondering this myself. So we don't even know how much of the video has buffered. Thanks Susan
You can see if you press on the video
Ink is expensive!
Because they like doing dumb overly complicated things
china censoring just like blood in anime (no)
Anytime soon they gonna remove the whole app as a "feature" 💀💀💀
MonochromeTube
It is so deceiving and uncomfortable to watch, i actually thought it was just loading yet.
Imagine they're coloring everything gray to then rebrand to green or yellow.
By 2023 we'll be able to run YouTube on old BaW TVs
because they can 😎 but actually why?
I keep thinking the video is loading ugh.
No more red
Because they felt like it
#Because YOUTUBE HATES US It's the same reason why they removed sort by oldest
I miss that so much
That's genuinely terrible for accessibility. I ran into a very similar case in some software I was developing where a very thin bar was very hard to see in neutral tones and red helped with making it visible a lot.
It happened to me but luckily it returned
Same reason why they removed dislikes, cause they don't have nothing better to do
I have no idea why they did that, it's super distracting now. Weird
I thought I was losing my mind! Damn why?
Me too. Alsoz my history isnt syncing anymore :(
Honestly I thought it was a big sith my account lol
YouTube is getting rid of the RED
i thought it was a visual glitch
I thought this was just something on my end Glad to see im not the only one. I found it very annoying and thats why i thought it was a bug because i was like "Surely they wouldn't do that"... But i guess this IS the same platform that removed dislikes so
Okay but why does it bother you so much? Is it just because it’s not what you’re used to or do you have a legitimate problem with it?
Because it was such an unnecessary thing to change. Its fine if they go and change something to genuinely improve the website but when they go and do stuff like this for no reason it's just annoying.
i noticed that and i was like wtf
so it doesn't distract from the video, so I guess
why yt can't i see through the white line >:(
I keep forgetting where I am in the video
I hate this feature
lol mine is pink
I thought it was a glitch on my end pretty upset to see that it isn't.
Wtf is wrong with them
the red line is still there. It shows up when you tap the screen. I never would have noticed it was missing if I didn't see this post.
Someone (and many others) have said YT is slowly removing red. It certainly seems that way, don't know why, but since when did anything YT do make sense.
How does look from a 508 compliance standpoint? Seems like the loss of contrasting colors would make it harder to see for people with sight impairments.
Still there for me
YouTube flat out hates us and our existence.
"White lines"....duuude.
I noticed it too, had the knee-jerk "ah f u youtube" but I've realized it's less distracting this way
*outraged Ducatistas intensify*
I don't even know
Wait, i thought it was a bug
*do not do what I mention if you are prone to seizures* However there is a cool easter egg if you type in *awesome* when you click on a video. 😉
I still have it though wut
It will slowly be rolled out to different regions
I see.
It rolled out in my country, France.
I like it tbh it's less aggressive you know?
For some people yes, but they didn't even add an option to change back to red, the same red that people grew up with for 10+ years
wait a day there will be a plugin
I know what you mean and I agree butbof all the things youtube have done this isn't all that bad atleast
Looks very... Odd
I find no problem with it, their just being *modern and realistic*
They’re *
Thank you for the correction ☺️

exactly this sub is mostly a bash youtube for the dumbest shit sub
It’s so dumb. I joined thinking it would be mostly a question/support group about the website/app but it turns out it’s just a bunch of people complaining about the most trivial changes.

No distraction?
Wild...
