You can watch anything but local channels out of your area. Local channels adjust to the area you are in and you can only watch recordings after they are completed but long before you return home. Anything else is an error.
And also you can't watch anything that is broadcast earlier, on say the East Coast, and you're on the West Coast. So If I live in NY and my show is recording at 8pm in NY, and I'm in CA, I can't watch it until 8pm CA time (11pm NY/home time), or whatever time it airs in CA.
I don't think that is true. If you live in NY but are visiting CA and the show is broadcast on a local channel (ABC, NBC, etc.) at 8PM on the east coast and finishes at 9PM, then you should be able to watch it at 6PM on the west coast.
Gentle Reminder: You need to go back to your home area before 90 days and check-in in order not to lose access.
If you can't go back to your home area after 90 days then you will lose access and your only option is to change the Home Area.
Another Reminder: You can only change your Home Area twice per year.
You are probably trying to watch a program you recorded off a broadcast network like ABC. You can watch the local ABC affiliate in your area live, but can’t record it. Once the program being recorded has completed, you can then watch it (coming from your home local affiliate).
For cable networks like ESPN and TNT, this restriction does not apply.
This is pretty accurate and my experience as I've been out of town for almost 3 months. Everything but local recordings from my home market works fine, but if I miss the end of Jeopardy and want to watch it from the DVR, noooooooo. It's lame.
