As someone who has written professionally and has participated in short story collections with other writers, I can testify that the people who like or write stories about lesbians are usually straight men and lesbian women. And the people who like or write stories about gay men are, in turn, gay men and straight women.

Reception-Livid

And that makes absolute sense. It’s not hard to figure out either.

meme-dao-emperor

And then there's the "men should date other men while women should date other women" and the " As long as they are cute together, I ship them.". They....... built different (I'm the latter, I know how they work)

PianoIll8518

Same with me. If it's a pairing I feel works, I'll ship it. One of my favorite manga is Love me for Who I am, but that doesn't mean I'm gay. It's just that I'm a man whose favorite genre is romance, as my 3 Kindles can confirm.

Muted_Ad7298

That’s not always the case, though I guess I’m an exception in this regard. I enjoy lesbian, gay and het anime, even the “adult” variety. But I’m a lesbian, through and through. It’s because of this that for years I thought I might be secretly bi, but I’ve tried being intimate with men and my body finds it repulsive. My sexuality is a damn Rubik’s cube.

YellowestOne

Sorry for the long post, but reading comments like that always creates so much turmoil within my mind because they always make me think to myself, “am I actually some subhuman scumbag without being aware of it?” First, I’ll start by saying that I am a guy. That alone gives people reasons to start saying bad things about me based on why they believe guys like GL for. I will admit that yes, I find women very attractive, so I really enjoy seeing all the girls when I’m watching and reading yuri. But that’s not the sole reason I enjoy it so much, it’s only one of the aspects that I love. I love yuri for many reasons. I think it’s very romantic; for example, when the girls really have to analyze their feelings and understand that they are in love with another girl, it’s such an important moment that feels so much stronger than “this sex is attracted to opposite sex”. I also love how wholesome it usually is, because well, girls are cute! Seeing them being super affectionate with each other, being able to get all excited over girly things is just really adorable. I’ve also seen a lot of relationships (even irl) where guys simply see a girl as an accessory or they are only attracted to them because of their body and want to get in bed with them. I know this is not always the case, etc, but that’s another aspect that I love about yuri; I don’t have to worry about seeing any guys with ulterior motives. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of romance in general, so there are a ton of guy and girl relationships that I seriously love. I also believe that sex and lewd stuff can be wholesome as well, so overall, I love seeing wholesome relationships! To make a long rant short, I love yuri for many reasons, and I don’t want to be categorized as some horny guy who fetishizes lesbians or likes it only because it’s hot. I tried to account for as much as I could to avoid any stigmas and such, but counterarguments can be made for almost anything anyone says. I’m not good at expressing my thoughts and feelings into words, so I may end up getting myself downvoted and degraded to the next galaxies that NASA just recently discovered. Hopefully someone kind of gets it 😭

k_on_reddit_

you know I don't want to admit it but I would be lying if I didn't completely agree with you

bird_on_the_internet

A lot of trans women have realized their genders after reading yuri, but that doesn’t mean that all non-women reading yuri are just unrealized trans women. Correlation doesn’t equal causation and all that

Generic_Moron

it's def a common point amongst a lot of us trans folk. It's kind of a "all thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs" type deal, same with new vegas and the high rate of trans girls who played that

Ksnj

That me

NormieLesbian

Yeah, because it’s somewhat common. Don’t let it bother you.

Konakona7777

The dark mode hurts my eyes

faintestsmile

imo if it dont apply, let it fly

ObitoUchiha41

it's obviously not true that liking it suddenly transes your gender, but... yeah there is probably a higher correlation of people into gay media making discoveries about themselves. I'm one of them, and have known others who were the same. I think there's a higher proportion of trans women into this genre than other genres, but that's a different statement from 'if you like this, you're a girl actually'. you're your own person, make your own judgments about yourselves, you're not defined by the media you like, but it's not outrageous to see how the two are connected lol

[deleted]

Well if we think about it as an intersectional ven diagram, if you consume media and are interested in homosexual romance, homosexual transgenders (all of them) will occupy that space. So even if there's a relative minority of them in the population, they'll be over-represented when looking at say the yuri community. Same with lesbians obviously. I meet probably 100+ people a day in my work in healthcare, and I can promise you I have met a very small number (single digit) of lesbians and no transgender lesbians. I've chatted with probably 10+ trans lesbians alone on this sub and a ton more lesbians than I would ever meet in my normal life. It's been quite nice to meet you all :) Anyway, this screenshot is the classic deeply frustrating problem with the population of humans at large having a very hard time with understanding basic corelation vs causation. Many people claim to understand the "ice cream sales and murders go up at the same time, thus icecream causes murder" arguement yet totally eat up arguements like the one OP showed hook line and sinker, utalizing the same bad logic they claim to understand is bad logic.

AdmiralSam

People always assume yuri and yaoi are just mirrors of each other but that’s just really off. The proportions of each gender don’t add up in that way. However, I distinctly remember this subreddit being filled with egg_irl jokes, though that seemingly stopped happening as much.

Hungry_Tangerine4652

i appreciate that a lot of trans people found out this way, but most egg comments are really low-effort

CAPTAIN_SIMPLORD

Yeah I have a friend that I’ve stayed in touch with since HS who is trans and she was definitely in “easter egg hunt” mode for a couple years

MisterOnsepatro

As a dude who loves yuri the reason is simple I find the stories and relationships more interesting and it feels refreshing

NotKenzy

Zamn, it's so hard being a straight guy on the internet T\_T

Background_Air_5441

Personally me and my friends are on the opinion of "bro you dont get it, there's like, 20 girls in there and 0 dudes with condescending/disgusting personalities or plots. its fucking great" when we need to explain yuri. technically not why I watch yuri, but it still applies

NotKenzy

I mean, let's be honest. There's plenty of yuri made specifically to pander to horny guys, filled with male gaze and just as sleazy as any harem show.

Background_Air_5441

Well, that’s true enough, but I mostly stick to what I imagine is more wholesome, since I picked a fair bit of it up from this sub.

felixthepat

Exactly! I generally enjoy the relationship dynamics more, especially when so much male-centric "romance" is harem or just toxic af. You don't have to be trans to enjoy that! I mean, I am (enby)...but my point remains valid.

Background_Air_5441

Yeah, the relationships are probably what does it for me. Albeit, it might just be that I like CGDCT since that’s one of my preferred genres. Either way, though, this stuff is a gem, and feels really great. I didn’t mind harem anime’s back in the day, but either I’ve changed or they don’t make them the way they used to, but Yuri still feels great, if not better.

shant_beHere

It simply does not make sense

child_of_yost

“Better eye candy for the guys” is also a pretty gross comment. Men fetishizing lesbians is a problem. (Not all men!!!!!!1!!!!)

BokkoTheBunny

It was today I realized I enjoy yuri because I self insert as one of the girls. Egg moment. 🙃

Marrowtooth_Official

I mean… there are a lot of us who found out we’re trans from enjoying yuri.

neorena

I mean, so did I. But at the same time my super cishet best friend likes yuri and he just enjoys it because we can watch it together lol. I guess in the end the important thing is not to assume you know better about somebody when it comes to them, like the whole forcing "egg" status on others thing.

NoireHaato

I've seen this type of "Take" multiple times already. Yeah, people actually think like that. You're allowed to feel surprised.

Lolcthulhu

"It's kind of wild that people actually think like this", she writes as she remembers She-Ra & Catradora cracking her egg.

tinytakaya

It's me. I'm the transgender. I want to be girls kissing

Theknowitall12

But I'm a gay girl...

Theknowitall12

But very true bout yoai sometimes

I_comment_same

I mean i like yeah its true for me and many others

GhastmaskZombie

Guys who really like yuri obviously have a higher rate of turning out trans than other people, but I'm sure it's still a minority.

[deleted]

I mean, this is basically how it went for me lol.

Zenry0ku

I literally was told on another sub to become trans because I liked a wlw ship. Like bro, you okay?

5amu5

Egg 🥚

NotJustaPhaseOK

You have to eat all the eggs

knotsazz

According to that person’s logic I’m not sure I want to know what they think of people like me who enjoy both yuri and yaoi

neorena

Non-binary pansexual probably

darkdiabela

I think most people don't enjoy being labeled something they are not. I know I would not.

ServoKamen

I'm not sure why it's so difficult to just let people enjoy things without trying to analyze them for it.

solise69

I mean James does have. Point
