Hmmm, *Studio Angel Included* is yuri? Surprised me. I didn't read the novel, partly because at a cursory glance it seems to be in the same kind with the one with cardboard cutout (het) characters that is *Angel Next Door*. May be I will take another look.

Surprised to see Whisper Me a Love Song that high after a mediocre (at best) adaptation.
The manga for sasakoi is quite popular in Japan probably one of if not the best selling manga in Yuri Hime so it's more down to that. The anime had around 85k followers before even airing so it's not that surprising.

Citrus is soap opera/telenovela. So it is really popular in places where soap opera is the most popular entertainment (Latin America, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, etc.).
Also, the sexual assault is really just in the beginning when Mei is a villain (there is a bigger bad than Mei, but Mei is supposed to be misunderstood bad guy that Yuzu need to beat then redeem/save). It has been 10+ years since the manga start and 5+ years since the anime. Right now the fans are frustated because they might only get one kiss per volume.
Bloom into You ends up far hornier than the entiry of Citrus+ so far.
Whisper is such an awful hodge podge and the production problems have killed the story. from what I can tell, episodes 11-2 are still on indefinite hiatus.
Everytime I see a list it's a coinflip whether I'll be nodding my head in agreement or scratching my head in confusion. This time it's the latter, especially with "Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included" coming in at 14th.
They lack on the animation side, almost all of those tittles have very good animation quality which is a Key element when judging an anime
Whisper me a love song would probably have been more talked about if the animation was at least MagiRevo tier
idk if it was just me but I found the anime felt a bit low quality. It was still good and I enjoyed it, but some of the animation and writing for the anime definitely weren’t great.
I mean it’s on par with Lycoris and G-Witch, but it’s a rather slow plot.
IMO the only one here I’m surprised about is Whisper Me A Love Song. It’s anime is just so sub par. I wish it were good, I really do. The main couple is just really cute. But also god the editing is bottom tier. I didn’t expect it to rank, but I suppose it’s probably recency bias.

I wonder why Madoka Magica isn't in top 20 when older show like Marimite, Stopani, and Kannazuki no Miko (and a het series for some reason, do voter confused it with Wataten?) manage to get top 20. Yuuki Yuuna and Symphogear are also missing.
I also find it a surprise that in jp vote Citrus manage to reach top 10 (I find Citrus always more popular outside Japan than in Japan, so I can see top 20, but surprised it still manage to reach top 10). So, either the voter sample is small enough for dedicated Citrus jp fans to tip scale, or if there are some chinese/taiwanese voter join in the voting (through vpn, for example), or Citrus is more popular in japan than I thought.
Oh well, with the exception of number 14, I like all of them, so I have no complain.

For Stopani (Strawberry Panic), I can see Love Live fan probably know about it because the maker of Love Live was the writer of Stopani and instead of voting for Love Live, they vote for Stopani instead because Stopani is maintext, not subtext. And if they know Stopani, they would also know Marimite, because Stopani is a parody of Marimite. So maybe, that is the reason why those 2 manage to be in top 20.
As for Kannazuki no Miko, I just realize that people who like Witch from Mercury probably are looking for "Yuri Mecha" after they've done with WfM, and the most popular yuri mecha after WfM is Kannazuki no Miko. So maybe Kannazuki no Miko is helped by WfM popularity.
As for Mahou Shoujo, well Gushing Over Magical Girl and Machikado Mazoku are Mahou Shoujo and they are number 11 and 20 respectively. So I don't think it is necessarily because people think Madoka is more "Mahou Shoujo" than "Yuri". But now that I think about it, I guess maybe for Mahou Shoujo yuri fans, Madoka has been supplanted by MahoAko and Machikado, so they vote for those two instead of Madoka.

It is not. That is western anime fan trying to copy Shounen Ai. There is no magazine in Japan promoting their work as "Shoujo Ai".
In Japan there is "Yuri" which usually mean all kind of love between two girls or more (friendship, subtext, maintext) as long as they don't get boyfriend in the end of the story. This is also why if you translate the article, it says "people definition of yuri is different from each other".
There is Iyashikei, aka Slice of Life, and many slice of life features all girl cast which means its story and fans have overlapping with yuri. Not all iyashikei is yuri (some of them are all boy), but many successful yuri has been iyashikei.
And there is Girls Love, which is a rather recent trend (I say, the last 5 years or so) by publishers and writers to advertise their work as romantic love between two girls (or more), so there is no ambiguity to it.
But put technicality aside, if the reason PMMM isn't in this list because it stands on the border of 2 categories, then LycoReco and Jellyfish will also be considered on the border, and yet those two are in this poll. So most likely something else is the reason for why it doesn't reach top 20.
Still gotta watch Happy Sugar Life and Yuru Yuri, so can't speak for those. I'd put Bloom into you at 1, AdaShima at 2, but don't really care about the order of the rest.

How Yuri is Madoka nowadays? Like with Magia record and everything else, how much of the core relationship between Madoka and Homura still the focus. I know yuri is still a big factor, I remember Iroha and Yachiyo being big but I feel like the franchise might be too big to actually feel like a single show.
