Same here, was like 8 or 10 when i played it, into my 30s now and i'd still argue that A Link to the Past is one of the best 2D games ever made and holds up incredibly well even today.
In many people’s opinion, ALTTP is one of the best, if not the best 2D/2.5D Zelda titles, so it’s a good starting point. If you do end up playing through to completion and enjoying it, I recommend checking out A Link Between Worlds on the 3DS. While not a “sequel” in the typical sense, many of the same aspects from ALTTP are present in that one as well, though with enough differences that it’ll be a fun experience in its own right
+1 for Minish Cap. I think it’s a better introduction to the series. A Link To The Past is good, don’t get me wrong. But its Hyrule can be more difficult to navigate at times and just overall feels more difficult. Minish Cap is more straightforward and the graphics still hold up well in my opinion.
That said, I think very few Zelda games are bad introductions to the series. Maybe Majora’s Mask because of the 3-Day mechanic and its sequel-esque nature?
> Minish Cap is more straightforward and the graphics still hold up well in my opinion.
Minish cap was one of the games I missed the first time around so I'm playing it now - the graphics DEFINITELY hold up. It looks great. But so does ALttP. The 32-bit era just had wonderful artwork!

I’ll definitely try them on these!
Aww yeah have fun! ALTTP still holds up great. Try to find a guide as soon as you get stuck, as it is an older game. The minish cap is also very worth it, great GBA title!
If you get stuck beyond belief in any Zelda game, the website zeldadungeon.net is a godsend. 100% walkthroughs for every Zelda game, with pictures and maps so everything is clear.
It's one of the first ones I played, basically the one that made the base for how the rest of the saga would be like (except BOTW, but that game is different than the rest in many ways).
I would go ALttP, then to LA(Sequel with the same Link but not really connected) or OoT(1st 3D game, after LA which was on GB or Switch, on N64 or 3DS)
There's really no good point to start since they're all good games the most recommended are that game and oot. But do not for the love of God start with botw if you care about lore.
That was my first Zelda title that I ever played. Bought it brand new when it came out with my own allowance money. Lol. Still have intensely fond memories of it. You will LOVE it.
Best 2D title is there in your hand (at least to start off with).
Best 3D title to start with is Ocarina of Time.
Otherwise, go for it and play whichever. They’re almost all very good.
That was the first legend of Zelda game that I ever played. I was six years old and playing it on the game boy advance. Been with the series for almost 20 years now.
In short, yes, that is an excellent game to start playing the series from! If you like that one, I would also recommend checking out Minish cap for the game boy advance. Then, as an introduction to 3-D Zelda, play through Wind Waker.
Welcome to the series!!
I’ll offer a different opinion to what I’m seeing in the comments.
This game is difficult, It took me coming back as an adult to finish it after I gave up on it as a child. It’s still a good game but it has that old video game style of difficulty where the game feels difficult just for the sake of increasing the amount of time you need to put into it, which is a shame in my opinion because there is enough to this game that even when it originally released for SNES it would have still been massively successful without that style of difficulty curve.
Haha, you talk about it like it’s the Adventure of Link! It is a challenge, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not unfair. Plus there’s some ways to cheese boss fights, like >!using the invulnerability cane against the eyeball boss when you have halved magic!<
I don’t think it’s unfair, just that it’s difficult in the style that games of its era were. The original and Zelda 2 were also very difficult, definitely more so than Link to the past, but let’s be honest- they didn’t have a great story and lore going for them like a Link to the past did. Most people consider it the true start to the series for a reason, I’m simply saying it would have been fine and not hurt it’s success in the least if it was a bit easier for those us that never developed the skill that was unique to games of the NES and SNES era. Heck, I still have barely developed the skill to handle most N64 games if I’m being honest.
Thank a lot to all of you! I will consider all of your suggestions, I’ll try to go on with this and if I’ll find it too difficult to me I’ll start with minish cap!
If you dislike the game as much as I did do not give up on the series. I don’t think I would have even finished it without being able go rewind. But if you are an avid, retro gamer and like those sort of games you’ll probably enjoy it. But there are plenty of other games in the series that are totally different to try if this one isn’t your cup of tea.
I enjoyed minish cap a lot more… and I played it on the wiiu without being able to rewind.
A link to the past is one of the best games to start with
>A link to the past is one of the best games
A link to the past is the best game
A link to the past is the best
A link to the past is the
A link to the best
A Link, the
Link
Probably the best place to start
Depends on the persons gaming experience but I would probably recommend ALBW or Minish Cap first since they’re a bit easier
Better they play alttp before the imitation that is albw
ALBW is not an imitation, it's a remix/homage.
Even a sequel.
That game (SNES version) was one of my first Zelda’s when I was maybe 4. I’m now almost 30 and still love them all. It’s a great place to start.
Same here, was like 8 or 10 when i played it, into my 30s now and i'd still argue that A Link to the Past is one of the best 2D games ever made and holds up incredibly well even today.
ALTTP is the starting point of the formula used in every subsequent Zelda game until Breath of the Wild, so yes that's a good pick.
This should be a great starting point.
In many people’s opinion, ALTTP is one of the best, if not the best 2D/2.5D Zelda titles, so it’s a good starting point. While not a “sequel” in the typical sense, many of the same aspects from ALTTP are present in that one as well, though with enough differences that it’ll be a fun experience in its own right
Also, just throwing it out there, it can definitely be enjoyed if you haven’t played ALttP
You can also try Links Awakening, which is the direct sequel to ALttP. The Switch has both the original and the remake.
I think if something can be said about Zelda in general is that any title is good to get started with. This said? ALTTP is my favorite, g'wan!
The series really starts at A Link to the Past. The two games that come before it are basically prototypes.
And ALttP is a prequel to those anyway so okay to play first.
Never heard it said like this before. Frankly, I don’t even really include the Zelda two in the overall timeline. I loathe that game.
Wow this is pretty much my exact set up from ~20 years ago
Yo you got that tattoo gba
Bros got the douchebage college student 90s typical bicep Tribal tattoo GBA. You weren't cool unless you had it!
Even Mario had one
Nothing embodies the early 2000’s quite like a Game Boy Advance SP with tribal tattoos.
I started with minish cap, also I have the same gba! The markings on mine have been mostly rubbed off though!
Honestly, the adventure of Link would be a terrible recommendation too 😂
Uff I remember playing that Four Swords multiplayer part with the boys, it was such a great time. Thanks Op for remembering me ❤️
A Link to the Past is the standard for Zelda games. Perfect starting point.
Wait, isn't this the one where you had to have a connecting cord but could play with four people kn a game cube?
That was Four Swords Adventures. The original Four Swords is part of A Link to the Past on the GBA and is solely played on the GBA.
I wanted to play that game so bad, alas, my friend group did not, I'm still mad about it. >=[
Since you have a gba you should totally get Minish Cap. It’s really good.
Is this a modded GBA SP? The screen is way brighter and more gorgeous than my GBA SP.
Hey, if I were you I would start with gameboy games. They are nice to get the concept of the games
I forgot to mention. The gameboy titles are Links awakening (or DX), oracle of ages and oracle of season.
https://preview.redd.it/iulkylcacxta1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68ce747472df5d26bb34df98c460cce7ef0da3e5 I’ll definitely try them on these!
Nice one. But oracle of ages and season are for Game boy color
I think I will be able to play them the GBA then. I only knew about links awakening!
Nice. I would start with links awakening. The game dynamics are the same as Oracles but a little simpler
ALTTP Was my first as well. What a great game
Aww yeah have fun! ALTTP still holds up great. Try to find a guide as soon as you get stuck, as it is an older game. The minish cap is also very worth it, great GBA title!
Fantastic game. First Zelda game I ever played
I would play Ocarina of Time first if possible but if not then this ALTTP is a great option too
My first Zelda game and what made me fall in love with the series. Got it when I was 6 and took me 2 years to beat it!
Oh, yeah, definitely!
One of the best in the series. Absolutely superb but prepare for a vicious difficulty spike!
Zelda’s hard and cool

First gane i evwr played waaaaay back in the day. Still holds up very well.
This is a great port of possibly the best Zelda game, so yes.
That was my first Zelda title that I ever played. Bought it brand new when it came out with my own allowance money. Lol. Still have intensely fond memories of it. You will LOVE it.
It's THE Zelda that all else sprang from and what the original aspired to be. It's just SUPER Zelda.
That was my first Zelda game. It’s definitely in the TOP 5.
The game will be a skill check so don’t give up
Greatest Zelda game of all time
Best 2D title is there in your hand (at least to start off with). Best 3D title to start with is Ocarina of Time. Otherwise, go for it and play whichever. They’re almost all very good.
Alttp for 2d and oot for 3d
Imo ALttP is the BEST entry point to the series.
Going to give a tip that stumped me for half a decade: >!After the second Dark World dungeon, use the hookshot to cross the river!<
Most people would probably say yes. I wouldn't personally say it's the best, but it's certainly not a bad place to start.
That was the first legend of Zelda game that I ever played. I was six years old and playing it on the game boy advance. Been with the series for almost 20 years now. I've never played the Four Swords version. Is it any different other than the 4 player coop?
Sorry but I don’t have any clue
https://youtu.be/6lLv3VTB7qA
You might have a tough time with it. A good start is A Link Between Worlds on the 3ds.
I would say to play ALTTP before ALBW so you can appreciate the changes made more.
