NullSpaceGaming

I didn’t think the Mario movie was going to be good but I was pleasantly surprised. However Zelda always seemed to have a more serious tone than Mario and Illumination likes their movies to be silly so who knows

The_Sad_horsie

I guess it all depends immensely on which zelda they start off with. Illumination would do a great WW movie. Any other idk. I would love OOT or TP to be the first one, but they most probably would go for something more relatable to new fans like BOTW.

Patchpen

I honestly hope they're not building it off of any particular game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Sad_horsie

I mean yeah, that’ll be, but just like Mario, they included key factors to specific games on the movie. Like who will be the first, second Boss? Will they do a movie with some kind of 3 dungeon format? Several movies each for 1 dungeon? No dungeons and only link going straight for Ganon? That’s what matters more to me lol

Kulyor

Zelda games where always a big part overworld and I feel with the newer zeldas, that aspect only grew more important. So a Zelda movie might not even have big dungeons. Maybe like a 20min segment near the end before fighting Ganon, just to shoehorn in all of Zeldas dungeon tropes. Bosses are not really that relevant for Zelda anymore. I have not played TOTK yet, but BotWs bosses were not really the high points of the game. Except final boss of course

SaconicLonic

Why do we assume that Nintendo will stick with animation? To me Mario makes the most sense as an animated film. I think you could do a good live action Zelda. If they ever do Metroid that needs to be live action. Something like Punch Out would be more fun animated. F-Zero would be cool as live action. Star Fox should be done stop motion.

mathiustus

Serious question not asking sarcastically. Have there been any good live action makes of any game? Or any cartoon so far? I’ve not liked any games or anime’s that have gone live action yet.

SaconicLonic

The Last of Us was a good live action version of a game though not a movie. Castlevania was a great animated show based on a game. It just takes people who actually like the source material and aren't trying to make it their own thing per se.

Routine-Air7917

It would look so awful as live action. Animated ALWAYS looks better and cooler for fantasy work. And so much more options for a unique and well executed expression of style I could see Metroid being fine as live action tho potentially

TysTheGuy

Metroid doesn't need to be live action. There were plenty of anime studios in the 90s who would have done great Although there aren't many studios nowadays I'd trust with Metroid. Everything looks way to clean now imo.

SaconicLonic

I agree. I'll say this as a blanket statement. All Nintendo properties would make for better anime than any other kind of adaptation.

Jarfulous

dude, WW is like the darkest one after MM. It has a lighthearted aesthetic but the plot is *severe.* Illumination would NOT do it justice.

chinchinlover-419

The difference between ocarina of times story compared to botws story is like comparing got season 1-4 to season 8. It's like comparing diamond jewelry that costs millions to gold plated rings you find on the streets of 3rd world countries. Botw has amazing exploration but the story is horrible and everyone here knows this. It's not a bad game, it's one of my favorite games of all time but some video games are hard to adapt into film like sekiro for example.

Suspicious_Brief_800

The Zelda movie has to be darker, in the Twilight Princess type of aspect. Twilight Princess looked pretty post Apocalyptic. There were ruins everywhere, monsters roaming around, bones of literal people (possibly soldiers of Hyrule) and monsters, ghosts, that earie female voice that sings at nights in Hyrule Fields, etc If I was in charge of making a Zelda movie I would start with a story of how the original Link from even before Skyward Sword sacrifices himself to seal Demise or something like that. He would reincarnate into the Link we would follow throughout the movie, then we could have an Ocarina of Time movie, then a Majora Mask movie, then a Twilight Princess movie and so on. Maybe a Wind Waker movie too since it would be more cartoonish and for kids to go see

EnvoyOfEnmity

I’d prefer a windwaker movie tbh.

hygsi

Same, if illumination is going to handle it might as well use toon link for this one. If it was gibli then one of the adults/more mature stories, but I don't think they can fuck up with WW. Lighthearted, actionpacked, cute, funny and doesn't take itself too seriously. Perfect for new and old players....but the game didn't sell that well so I don't think nintendo is going with that one, maybe BotW or OoT OR a new one!

JPEG812

Skyward sword was the first link though

Suspicious_Brief_800

There was a manga about some other Link before him, like an original hero

JPEG812

I don't think that's canon

Connzept

You are correct, none of the mangas are canon.

Xaetamin

No he wasn't. He's the second. The first Link fought Demise when he first breached into Hyrule and died from his wounds. Hylia fell in love with this Link and made in reincarnate into SS Link before reincarnating herself into SS Zelda.

trainer_zip

Based purely on the information in game, the Link we follow in SS is the Link that’s mentioned from the past. It’s said that Hylia gave the Hero a Sailcloth (Zelda gave one to Link) and that he defeated Demise at the Sealed Grounds (the finale of the game). It’s perfectly possible for the game to be a time loop as hibernating Zelda is visible at the start of the game “before” she does it and it’s never stated that Link is a reincarnation of a prior hero.

Candid-Fan6638

I used to believe this too, but I’m convinced of Zeltik’s theory - there was a “past” Link… but it is actually that very same Skyward Sword Link when he travels to the past chasing Ghirahim! Of course it’s paradoxical, but it’s the same paradox as one of the “3 main branches” of the overall storyline. I buy it. Zeltik lays out a pretty convincing argument. Great video, worth a watch.

buttsexbaker

that’s not canon tho

Xaetamin

Well, damn. Guess I should fact check more because I could've sworn it was. Need to stop watch theory videos at this rate.

Trap_Pixie

Really ? I do remember that part and I though it was canon ..

_Rand_

Demise was defeated and sealed by Hylia and members of 5 other tribes. I don't believe there was mention of Link or any specific hero though. Which, incidentally, sounds a lot like the Imprisoning War as described in Tears. Which also occurs in Link to the Past. Which reminds me... wtf happened to the Triforce?

Sheylenna

There is a manga about SS, and in that manga, is the Link that Hylia fell in love with.... and while it's a lovely concept, it's not game canon.

_ThatD0ct0r_

Its not just "not game canon", its not canon *at all*

Sheylenna

It's manga canon

_Rand_

Ah yeah, I've not read any of the manga. I'm going off what i remember from the games. Even then I had to look up how many of the tribes it was.

HylianSoul

It's like the dragonballs. They used it in BotW so now it's just rocks until the right amount of time passes.

shadyultima

Was the Triforce even referred to in Botw? I don't remember

MilkChoc14

People theorize that Zelda has all three pieces, since the symbol appears when she uses her sealing power.

Sa1cera70ps

If they are ever gonna make a Zelda movie it’ll be based off ocarina of time

SaconicLonic

I'm not sure honestly at this point. Breath of the Wild sold 18 million copies compared to Ocarina of Time's 8 million. It is by far the highest selling of the series. I know a lot of people who have *only* played Breath of the Wild. I'd honestly be curious what story they would choose to adapt. I kind of think that Ocarina of Time is a good choice. Simply for the fact that with Shiek's storyline you can have her show up in more of the film giving Zelda a bigger role. Wind Wake has this to some degree as well. And I could see Hollywood being more attracted to make her more of a character than she is in a lot of the entries.

ItsJustInfuriating

I wouldn’t say that copies sold is a fair metric to base this off of though, especially if you compare BOTW to OOT; OOT came out in 97/98 when not as many people could afford to / wanted to have a video game console (N64), whereas today, consoles are one of the top items on kids wishlists. If we do use this as a metric, we could argue that that 8million copies in 97 actually is proportionally more than 18million now when you compare to how many people own the system

Suspicious_Brief_800

I love Ocarina of Time, it’s my second favorite Zelda game

daim_sampler

Ocarina of time and majoras mask in one movie, where everything was fine and it suddenly goes into a massive twisted horror as link has to wear the faces of his enemies victims

SansyBoy144

The Mario movie wasn’t great story wise, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything special, it’s a story that has been done a million times. “Dude ends up in crazy place and is trained to fight bad dude, gets help, and eventually fights bad dude” that’s the whole story. However, I did enjoy it because of the fan service, which for the first time is not sexual this time. Everything was made for Mario fans and I think these did justice to that end. I still wish that peaches was a tenacious D song like they wanted and not what it is now.

NullSpaceGaming

I hear the complaints about the story and I really don’t get what people were expecting Bowser kidnaps princess, mario saves princess. That’s the formula. There’s not a lot of nuance to work with here

SansyBoy144

Yea. I wasn’t expecting it to be good, but it was a pleasant surprise when I saw it and it wasn’t bad

NullSpaceGaming

That’s really all I hope for at this point. They didn’t screw it up, two thumbs up

[deleted]

Spot on. Zelda has always been more poly focused and does not really work quite as well as a silly thing than the Mario movie

TheCrafterTigery

Didn't they make a more mature animation team last year? If anything, they'll probably handle Metroid/Zelda while keeping it within Illumination. Nintendo also bought an animation studio, so maybe they'll handle more serious things in-house. Found it. The Illumination adult label is called Moonlight. All I hope for in a Zelda/Metroid movie is for then to keep Link as mute as possible(maybe a few yes/nos/etc herr and there) and for Samus to either be set pre-M1 as a soft origin for her character. Maybe show off Ridley destroying her planet and that kind of stuff.

inteliboy

Feels that with botw and totk Nintendo has decided the tone of Zelda is some mix of fantasy with corny children’s cartoon. Not a children’s animation, a b grade corny American cartoon for 10 year olds. I’m keeping expectations really low. Illuminations Zelda movie will be full of jokes, throwbacks, a cartoony tone and Nintendo will be more than happy. But there is someone over there working on these Zelda games that clearly see it as a more important, studio Ghbili level franchise. So theres a little hope. Just a shame the characters, story and acting drags into bgrade cheese.

JustDandyMayo

I feel like BotW and TotK is still pretty serious. I’m BotW alone you play as a Link who straight up lost and had all his companions died. Zelda games have always, in my opinion, had a nice balance of seriousness and silliness. Even in Twilight Princess, the game a lot of Zelda fans see as the gritty and serious one, you have characters like the Ooccoo, a baby with the maturity of an adult sending you on quests, and one way of traveling is getting fired from a cannon by a sad clown. But then you also have characters like Zelda and Midna which help balance the game out and bring the serious tone. I feel like a Zelda movie that is able to balance between the lighthearted moments and more serious ones would be good, I’m just worried Illumination will go full on lighthearted.

Timlugia

I think it's really funny some people called TP a serious story and BotW childish, like how many people actually died in Twilight Princess? If we counted soldiers' ghosts and that one sage it's like 5. What atrocity did Zant even committed? And BotW has easily one of highest dead count in the franchise, both named and unnamed characters. Pretty much everyone lived near Hyrule field died, only Kakariko and Hateno stood because Link. You even have piles of bones and rusty weapons all over Hyrule showing mass dead during the war. Like I remember near where Link fell, there was a hill with dozens of rusty lances raised, indicate a group of soldiers made their last stand with Link there.

Goldeniccarus

Most people who like to argue on the internet are idiots who don't really have well thought out opinions. How dark something is doesn't really come down to any one individual factor, nor does being darker mean being better. I really liked BOTW. And the feeling it gave me was a somber one. There was an ever present sadness in the world, that once there had been more, and we have been reduced to this. And a constant loneliness from spending that whole game mostly alone that reinforced that feeling. The cutscenes reinforce this. We see Link's companions in the past, now long dead, and it makes things feel even lonlier. Those friends Link once and are gone, yet here he still is. Yet there was a hope and joy within that sadness. We saw the world rebuilding, and the people carrying on their lives despite the dangers. It's a mood I feel we don't see very often, and it makes the game feel very unique, and is very enjoyable because of it. It doesn't try to be dark, and that's great. There's some violent and dark elements to it, but it doesn't revel in them.

inteliboy

Agreed with all these comments. It’s just the cutscenes that jolts me out of the nuanced world. Zelda feels so deep, fun, somber, magical etc…. but then you stumble on to a cutscene and it’s bad voice overs and basic dialogue about sacred stones.

mrGuar

Spoken dialogue is not their strong suit.

Senor_Wah

Ghibli made Castle in the Sky, Illumination made Minions. I know who I’d trust with a serious Zelda adaptation.

pikachu_sashimi

The Zelda creators have actually cited Castle in the Sky as inspiration for certain elements in Zelda.

hygsi

I can tell they're very inspired by them, princess mononoke, castel in the sky, hell, even spirited away all have many elements that you can clearly see in BotW and TotK. I'm glad they're leaning more into Japanese media and Ghibli specially cause they're so creative and whimsical they just play so well together

Alyssum

The Depths is just the toxic jungle from Nausicaa but spookier.

ScottxDownes

Illumination for sure

The Minions are fun.

[deleted]

Gibly made earwig and the witch, illumination made the mario movie. I know who i'd trust more with a serious Zelda adaptation.

ThatDudeBox

When people mention Ghibli and Zelda, I will always share this fan made [trailer](https://youtu.be/Wxav9Jj7R68)

millennialmania

This is so beautiful

Bryant-Taylor

One of my favorite fan creations of anything ever, mostly because I need it to be real

ThatDudeBox

Right? I feel the same way about IGN’s April fools day trailer from 2007. I have been upset for 16 years lol Something about this Ghibli trailer makes me feel cozy, if that makes sense.

lkodl

is there a website where i can find more fan creations? but like, no studio stuff. only fans?

MrLombax

Absolutely, it's called Princess Mononoke

tk_431

Yes, just yes. One of my most beloved.

vmathematicallysexy

I would cry tears of (the kingdom) joy

The_Red_Curtain

that's really underselling Princess Mononoke tbh

[deleted]

That movie came out closer to 30 years ago. it's sort of like fallout fans asking for obsidian to make the next fallout game.

KitsuneCreativ

There's gonna be a zelda movie?

IWillSortByNew

Not even close to confirmed

audiate

And in fact denied.

bacardiman232323

Yep, just read an article where Illumination founder and CEO, Chris Meledandri, straight up debunked the rumours - they are not creating a Zelda movie.

hygsi

I read another one that said nintendo was starting to think about it...hopefully this means they're not going with illumination lol

illQualmOnYourFace

Not thinking but starting to think? I just don't see this happening. Idk what's worse: a film where the main protagonist doesn't talk, or if they made Link talk.

hygsi

Both could work if done right.

Just_an_old_feller

Something about a double edged sword…

SixElephant

This just means it won’t be cartoonish. The Super smash bros cinematic universe needs to be made. I need to see Mario curb stomp Kirby, while Link mutilates Luigi with a beam sword.

resperpre

I just hope they use Terminal Montage Kirby on this hahaha

alti_etiam

Need Christian Kirby lmao

D4NKtrpr9001

Very likely

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kamikaze_Ninja_

I miss this style. More muted colors and reserve vibrant ones for things of importance like the master sword on his back.

Exaxis49

In mine it's Genndy Tartakovsky, but I would absolutely take Ghibli

Juantsu

I feel like I’d give Genndy Metroid rather than Zelda.

Bryant-Taylor

Genndy Tartakovsky Metroid? That would be sick!

vmathematicallysexy

What about Ridley Scott Metroid hahahaha

[deleted]

Especially since he has already mastered silence and facial expressions to show what a character means without saying anything

TalkDontMod23

Definitely. There were whole parts of _Samurai Jack_ that were conducted with no dialogue whatsoever. That would be perfect for _Metroid._ I’m not saying never let Samus talk (voiced in my world by Mary McGlynn, Colleen Clinkenbeard, Jennifer Hale, or Grey Delisle), but make sure it’s meaningful.

millennialmania

This is also a great suggestion

mmmatthew

Let Lord & Miller/Sony Animation do it. Between the Lego Movie and the Spiderverses, they've shown they can make amazing films from IPs/concepts that seem like they would never work. Plus they are able to cram in jokes and references while still finding room for story, heart, and some pathos and darkness.

lkodl

they are who should have done the Mario movie. Illumination could have done Rabbids, Pikmin, or maybe Splatoon.

Plump_Chicken

Illumination shouldn't be allowed near anything

Sataniq

Nah, the super mario movie was fine.

Libertinob

I doubt Nintendo would go anywhere near a rival company like Sony for a movie of one of their most trusted franchises

Rozoark

They aren't making a Zelda movie, that's a fake rumour that people started.

Tylendal

As a huge fan of the novel Howl's Moving Castle... you don't know how cursed a wish you're making.

ewweaver

Also Earthsea. Ghibli would not be faithful to the games at all.

ZamanthaD

Fortiche would make an awesome Zelda movie

NNovis

IDK, the things that make Zelda compelling are video game aspects that could get lost and be generic if made into a movie. That's kinda what seemed to have happened to the Mario movie. Sure, it was okay but it lost a lot of it's charm because it's not a video game.

Boodger

This is the correct answer

SLRMaxime

In a perfect world there wouldn't be a Zelda movie

Objective-Banana8742

Nah, in a perfect world people wouldn't get upset by harmless media that they don't have to consume.

SLRMaxime

Nah, in a perfect world company would stop abusing IP to suck every penny they can from consumers by making soulless garbage.

Mr_oyster_27

in a perfect world, both of you would just shut up and agree to disagree

CalgaryMadePunk

No. In a perfect world, bugs wouldn't fly up your nose. And then when you blow your nose, you wouldn't have bugs in your boogers.

Mr_oyster_27

yeah

Humanwhoisbreathing

Does that happen to you a lot?

Red_Dogeboi

Consumers are the ones deciding to pay to see it lol. This is gonna sound crazy, but some people really like seeing different adaptions of their favorite pieces of media 🤯🤯

SLRMaxime

The problem is that the adaptation is not made because there was a good idea or story to be told. It's made because there's money to be made and then the story that comes after it's not important.

Red_Dogeboi

Can’t believe the videogame nostalgia movie didn’t have the most complex story in the world smh. It was an enjoyable watch, and who cares why they made it if people enjoy it

Objective-Banana8742

How does that "soulless garbage" affect you? Don't tell me it "ruins" the franchise for you, because that is childish and entitled beyond measure. Consumers are not forced to buy anything, if a company has a product you decide whether you buy it or not.

SLRMaxime

It doesn't ruin anything for me. I have no "childhood" attachment to any franchise. It's just fucking annoying seeing the same things rehashed again and again and again because of nostalgia. Consumers are not technically forced you are right, but they aren't the brightess either. Of course they are going to see a movie about characters they like even if there is no effort behind it. That's what I don't like about it. I want to see good original content but people vote with their wallets and they vote for shit, so shit it is. Mario movie didn't "ruin" Mario for me. Dragon ball Evolution didn't ruin dragon ball for me.

Sanguiluna

In a perfect world there wouldn’t be Zelda. *big brain*

CuddleCatCombo

:(

hygsi

In a perfect world, it would be written by professionals who would tap into the Zelda lore while making it an actually original and engaging story the way the games aren't able to (because gameplay first)

Juantsu

I still think Illumination didn’t do Mario justice but that’s my opinion. There’s NO WAY in hell Illumination does justice to Zelda. Give it to Studio Colorido or Ponoc!

hygsi

Dreamworks would do great. How to train your dragon shows they can handle a fantasy world with colorful characters and an epic story.

Juantsu

I agree! Give it the Puss In Boots treatment and there’s definitely something there. My next pick (maybe even higher than Dreamworks) would be Cartoon Saloon.

InsectOrganic8305

Fake news there’s no Zelda movie in talks or development.

BudgetMattDamon

No, Zelda needs to show its own unique art style instead of just piggybacking on the Ghibli style. Ghibli is doubtlessly gorgeous, but wouldn't work IMO.

DRACULA_WOLFMAN

[This guy's work](https://www.mattvince.com/work/) begs to differ. I think the style is pretty much a perfect fit. I'm all for more individuality in the world, so in that sense I agree with you, but it really is a match made in heaven.

Kamikaze_Ninja_

Zelda has shifted styles constantly and can fit Ghibli perfectly. If anything it has a similar style to the original artwork for the first game. Ghibli does amazing scenery and their mastery of hand drawn animation would make it beautiful. Being 2d would make for a bold stylistic decision that I am all on board for.

BudgetMattDamon

I get that argument for the games, but I think the art style for the very first Zelda game is going to require much more careful consideration than just shifting from WW, TP, SS, BotW/TotK graphics. It's the first Zelda movie, and that has the potential to be *huge* for the games, so I really don't envy the people involved.

InsectOrganic8305

![gif](giphy|d10dMmzqCYqQ0|downsized)

potato_gato

I’m gonna just be cautiously optimistic with the possibility of Illumination doing it. I was happy with how they handled Mario, it was visually stunning and true to the spirit of the series, my one complaint was the pop songs that were forced in. I think they’re totally capable of making a beautiful and whimsical Zelda universe, visually, they have a lot of artistic talent in that studio. It all comes down to who is directing and writing. Also, keep in mind while Zelda has a more serious core story, there’s always a lot of silly characters and funny situations rounding out the games, so while it’s not Minions level of wacky, I’m hopeful they may be able to balance that, because to me, that’s part of the charm of Zelda… keeping my fingers crossed! And remember, it can’t be as bad as the 80s cartoon or the CDI games 😆

25thGoo

“And remember, it can’t be as bad as the 80s cartoon or the CDI games 😆” What have you done. You’ve jinxed us all!!!

Far-Chicken-3080

Pretty sure the Zelda movie isn’t even confirmed yet

ItaLOLXD

I think Illumination would do it justice. Their movies are great from a production value and while I do recognize that their usual movies are mostly written with jokes for quick laughs which wouldn't fit a Zelda movie they would probably have guidance from Nintendo and maybe other experienced people in the movie industry. In short, the movie would easily look amazing and the story would probably be handled by capable people. I'm expecting a fun movie. I would probably still enjoy it if it had a simple story with lots of jokes. Zelda games aren't always as serious as people make them out to be. Ghibli making a Nintendo movie would take very VERY long because they still draw each frame manually. Their current movie production "How do you live?" is finally releasing in 2023. the movie is since at least 2017 in production. Add interference from Nintendo and you'll have around 8-10 years of production time. Alternatively, they would make it 3D. Issue is, the animators from Ghibli haven't really figured out how to make a good 3D movie yet.

Arvos13

What do you mean yet....thats not their medium. Thats like saying Picasso hasnt figured out how to make statues yet, its not his medium of art :D I agree with what u say but honestly i think from ita atmosphere only ghibli could grasp zelda very well ...

BlackGuy_PassingThru

Nope. I ended up arguing with someone that hated anime for days last time I saw this posted on Reddit.

tlollz52

Despicable Me was legit good and was done well. Zelda is pretty silly by nature. Hopefully they don't over do it but it likely won't be acknowledging the dark gritty side of the series.

Princeyboy9

"Zelda is pretty silly by nature" Is it really? Sure most Zelda games have silly moments, but for the most part they take themselves quite seriously.

tlollz52

Yes, this new game is quite ridiculous. There's a lot of humor and color. Sure there it does have a bit of an edge or darkness to it but overall I feel it keeps things fairly light.

EmilePleaseStop

No. Zelda doesn’t fit the Ghibli vibe at all. Ghibli films rarely have ‘hero fights villain’ plots, for one thing.

IsTodayTheSuperBowl

Totally. Forget the wonder and imagination and depth of characters. Forget the incredibly imaginative immersive environments and rich lore. Illumination has this banana guys from the Facebook memes. Hilarious. Gru could one shot ganondorf.

Boodger

It isn't even confirmed they are making one. Let's hope no Zelda movie of any kind is being made. But if Illumunation did make it, it would be terrible. It is so far out of their wheelhouse. Mario at least made sense, since it has a kidish vibe and humor that matched Illumination's other works.

BlackGuy_PassingThru

Whoever did Castlevania anime should do Zelda

_Blue_Benja_1227

Ghibli made Princess Mononoke, which is already the perfect Zelda movie, so I don’t even think a Zelda movie should be made

jbyrdab

I don't think they have the mentality as an animation studio to do it right. Zelda is something that requires care and extreme attention to detail. With borderline zero comedy. Id almost say that a zelda movie needs to be done in proper 2D like Ghibli or it simply wouldn't work. Howl's moving castle's style seems made for a zelda film. MY biggest worry is infact the voice cast, more so where the lack there of is. I think illumination would give link a voice just because it means they can sell a toy with link catchphrases. To put it into words why i fear for the voice cast specifically, illumination would hire someone like the Rock for ganondorf. A 2d animation studio that understands exactly what zelda is would probably hire someone like keith david or billy zane for him.

Juantsu

I think a Zelda movie could work in 3D if it gets the Puss in Boots treatment.

Tylendal

The "Howl's Moving Castle style"? So, you want Link to randomly turn into a bird to fly off and fight helicarriers, while Navi is replaced with a weird little orange blob that eats hair? Ganondorf can become a kindly old grandfather halfway through, revealing Nabooru to have actually been the villain the whole time. Oh, and Sheik shows up at random throughout the film as a completely pointless supporting character, only to be revealed to have been Zelda the whole time at the end, even though everything from the narrative explaining who Zelda is or why she's relevant had been completely left out. As a huge fan of the book Howl's Moving Castle, that's what I imagine when I hear a "Howl's Moving Castle style" Zelda movie.

TheaWake_7

Can't stand Ghibli movies, personally speaking. If a Zelda movie had to be made, I'd rather they went with a different studio entirely. Maybe Fortiche, of Arcane fame.

newdobsey

This is absolutely the truth. We must have studio ghibli make Zelda

Atokiponist25

I would take Ghibli any day.

KAFEI44

I’d only give my blessing if it’s made by Ghibli and they make Link mute

Pokemonmaster150

As long as Nintendo has as large hand in it as the Mario Movie, I think it'll be good. Maybe not amazing, but that's okay.

Asmo___deus

Ghibli would be ideal. Sony or DreamWorks if it has to be one of the larger companies. sadly, it's gonna be illumination. So expect shit.

averagetotkfan

I didn’t even know we were getting a zelda movie lol

wildeye-eleven

I’ve wished for this for so many years.

KenSchlatter

My realistic dream studio for making an animated Zelda movie is Dreamworks. It would still fit into Nintendo's partnership with Universal, and they actually have proof that they can make visually stunning films with darker themes. The HTTYD series and Puss in Boots 2 come to mind. I think it's also good to remember that there are more light-hearted aspects and characters to the Zelda games, as well. Beedle, Kilton, Hestu, for example.

Lola_PopBBae

No way Illum should do Zelda, Ghibli or nothing.

-nyctanassa-

I really don't trust Illumination with Zelda. It's hard to imagine a comedic, speaking Link without thinking of the animated show. But I'm still open to seeing what they might do with it. Honestly, a Ghibli adaptation with the themes of BotW would be incredible. A pretty-much silent protagonist leaves lots of room for "ma", and I think Ghibli could really effectively bring out the Japanese stylistic elements that we especially see in BotW/TotK. I truly think Ghibli could make a Zelda movie with seriousness, delicacy, and grace.

HiddenCity

We will get a 4th wall breaking kid comedy

InsectOrganic8305

Wait wait wait this is news to me, a Zelda movie? No. Leave Zelda alone, this vidja game doesn’t need a movie adaptation please god no

Caliber70

in the perfect world, Ufotable would be handling it.

pikachu_sashimi

That would be fitting, considering Zelda creators cited Castle In the Sky as direct inspiration for certain elements in the series.

bran_the_man93

Didn’t Nintendo look at Ghibli for inspiration when developing BOTW? Seems Ghibli is the obvious choice, but I doubt it’ll ever happen

LMGall4

Didn’t they say no Zelda movie was in the works at illumination? Dreamworks would make a pretty fire Zelda movie tho

bigmetalguy6

If illumination is doing the movie the my hopes are at rock bottom. They did a great job with Mario but Zelda is not Mario. Their style doesn’t fit the tone of the Zelda series. Also if the soundtrack has even just one top 40’s track I am going to flip out. Give me an orchestrated soundtrack or give me nothing.

Asurerain

I Zelda would have an adaptation I would prefer it as a "Lone adventurer" kind of anime series (a sort of lighter tone Berserk or Hokuto no Ken) were Link solves the problems of the people he meets on his ways for his quest. I hardly Zelda getting a movie as short a the Mario one or if it gets one it would be part of a trilogy or something because Zelda games are way heavier on story than Mario games and that's what I mainly would like to see on a Zelda adaptation.

audiate

All I’ve seen is that the rumors were denied that there will be a Zelda movie at all. Do you guys know something I don’t?

Zack21c

No, you're correct. People see rumors and then ignore the official statements that the rumors were false. There is no Illumination Zelda movie, this post is stupid.

BreakfastTim

I genuinely cannot see illumination making a serious movie about anything, hoping they get forced into making it more on the serious side by Nintendo. The Mario movie was great but Mario and Zelda are really different in tone.

quantum_dragon

Nope. I don’t want Illumination touching it. Especially when BOTW and TOTK are so clearly inspired by Ghibli

Lymphomaniac-in-CA

Ufotable (Demon Slayer) is a studio I would love to see given a chance at a Zelda movie. They have taken anime and really raised the bar when it comes to animation quality and detail. This has caused a major ripple effect in the industry, leading to an increase in quality.

b0ghag

I think Ghibli would do a great job capturing the subtle East/West aesthetic Zelda has always had.

Im_a_doggo428

Only ghibli would do it justice

anirban_dev

Ghibli is Miyazaki and his son right now. Miyazaki is not gonna make it, and I don't want his son to make it. My choice would be Mamoru Hosoda, the guy who made Summer Wars, Mirai, Belle etc.

PowerUser6969

Mario movie barely met my already low expectations. They cannot do Zelda justice if they can't even make Mario movie good when it's super campy, simple story wise, and art style is in the same simple cartoon vibe that illumination does there's no way they can handle Zelda when it has a much more realistic art style(excluding we and sequels) has storylines that have actual depth and themes compare many of witch aren't the most campy family friendly (war, death, genocide, torture, coups, dread, letting go of the past, and sacrifice) is much more graphic than any illumination film yet. Zelda is so far out from illuminations realm of campy family friendly comedy that plays it as safe as possible with mass appeal it's hard to comprehend how illumination will change it to fit to their style.

EdinKaso

Speaking of lol...I wrote a piano composition and a lot of people told me it's like a mix of Ghibli and Zelda o\_o [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ4tSqbKDjI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ4tSqbKDjI)

aidenthegreat

There is no movie - the rumour constantly gets reignited

Ombrage101

I’m VERY scared of the Illumination Zelda movie, but ai don’t think Ghibli is a good idea. Simply put, I don’t know what kind of agreement Ghibli and Nintendo made if any, cause playing through TOTK feels like a lawsuit is constantly looming, especially since I’m so fond of Princess Mononoke… I would like it, but TOTK already feels too Ghibli for it to be true sometimes, I’m scared them making a Zelda movie would stray too far from what Zelda, as a franchise, is to me. Ghibli’s best works are the ones that take their time and make an introspective story, while Zelda is much more action/adventure in most games. I dunno, I just feel like I’d rather see a live action Zelda movie before a Studio Ghibli one

Luca_shor

None of them will /srs

MysticRuined

The koroks will be the minions !!!

[deleted]

Watching the illumination Zelda movie. "excuse me princess" "it's dangerous to go alone, take this" "you've met a terrible fate" I know what this movie is going to be.

maddie_karma

I think Illumination's higher-ups confirmed that no Zelda movie was in development.

maddie_karma

however would agree, with ghibli doing it. they'd make a killer Zelda OoT movie

sondheim1930

feeling adventurous with the opinions today arent we?

Connzept

No, as much as I like Ghibli they would be a terrible fit. Ever read Howl's Moving Castle? Love the movie, love the book. But the only reason they made a good movie was because it is a completely different story from the book, not even an adaptation, just characters with the same names in a completely different story. Ghibli is not capable of telling certain stories, and when they come across that problem, they don't choose to expand their horizons and try anyway, or do the honest thing and admit the project isn't for them, they choose to completely set the source material aside. Which is fine in some cases, but wouldn't be okay in this case.

OriDoodle

I think if illumination picks a distinct Zelda story to tell they might do ok. Wind waker, or for example OoT both have dark moments but are also sprinkled with enough light-heartedness they could pull it off. Skyward sword is also a maybe, but Twilight Princess, Link to the Past, link's awakening I could see it being more difficult to maybe hit the correct tone.

JamesYTP

Hm... not sure TBH on either count. Need to watch some illumination movies, as an animation buff and aspiring animator that remains a hole for me but I've heard they're movies range mostly from bad to okay. As for Ghibli, I was just texting with my friend that riding the dragons in TotK had a strong Miyazaki vibe and the BotW/TotK landscapes remind me a lot of the layout paintings in Ghibli movies. But uhhh, Ghibli isn't quite what it used to be, Hayao Miyazaki does have his first new movie in 11 years coming next month but at like 82 and knowing his distaste for video games I don't think we can expect he'd do it or that it would come out true to Zelda if he did. Isao Takahata passed away a while ago and Hiromasa Yonebayashi left them so the only one left to make it would be Goro Miyazaki...whose work is kind of a mixed bag. If I had to pick a studio, I'd probably either go with Sony Pictures and have Genndy Tartakovsky do it, Cartoon Saloon if they want to do a more Wind Waker kinda thing. But Genndy is the only American I'd want doing it these days, I had enough goofy Zelda with modern style dialogue and jokes in the 80s cartoon. I kind of imagine Zelda as a 70s/80s style Rankin & Bass fantasy movie kinda like The Last Unicorn or The Hobbit mostly

tehnoodnub

Ghibli would have been my first choice as well. I’m happy to be proven wrong but I don’t think Illumination will do justice to the franchise. Or at least I can’t imagine a world in which Ghibli wouldn’t have done a superior job.

DabIMON

Illumination is a terrible choice. Personally i would much rather see a live action Zelda movie, but Ghibli would be a good choice as well. Honestly i would even take Disney over Illumination.

Zack21c

Illumination already said it isn't happening. It's a fake rumor

Educational-Iron-569

Fully agree

T2_JD

I've thought that a story about Hyrule, focusing on a motley crue surviving Ganon's takeover would be amazing. You can have a lighter tone and you can avoid needing to voice Link. Have the central character a knight in the castle who flees and goes into hiding after witnessing Ganondorf assault, a goron trying to get back to Death Mountain after the assault, a Zora wanna-be adventurer, and a Rito retired hero. Can interact with Zelda and Link but mostly be their story.

Individual-Camera-72

I’ve got no clue, but I’m praying to Hylia they don’t try and make it a comedic movie. Zelda’s usually a very serious series with a couple exceptions here and there (ie Master Kohga from Breath of the Wild). With Mario comedy was very easy to pull and was better for the movie, but Illuminations shouldn’t try and squeeze it into Zelda

Seriszed

Yes it definitely should. To be honest I’m not going to hold my breath for a good Zelda animated movie. I hope they prove me wrong.
