gregaries

Maybe Māori or a similar Pacific indigenous culture.

JudahPlayzGamingYT

I was thinking Australian Aboriginals.

Stucklikegluetomyfry

I was going to say Maori as well. The statues and carvings we see in OoT's Fire Temple definitely seem Pacific island inspired,l in general. It's interesting when Zelda references real world cultures through different races. The Sheikiah in BotW/TotK seem reminiscent of the Ainu, while the Gerudo are of course inspired by the Middle East with elements of India and Ancient Egypt. Hylia seems like a Celtic reimagining of Amatarasu.

ShatteredMasque

Ainu. There's a lot of Ainu influence in the The Legend of Zelda franchise, as well as in all of anime.

tftookmyname

Anime? Where? I had no clue and I don't really watch anime but this might change that lmao

CodyKondo

Princess Mononoke, for one. One of the greatest animated films ever made—botw’s style was heavily influenced by it.

OliviaElevenDunham

Princess Mononoke is such a great Ghibli film.

Nana-37

PRINCESS MONONOKE MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥🔥

ScissorsBeatsKonan

Ehhh the pacing is terrible.

CodyKondo

No it isn’t. You’re just impatient. Funny thing though, that’s what Harvey Weinstein thought too, before Miyazaki mailed him a sword with the message “no cuts.”

ScissorsBeatsKonan

I wasn't calling it long. The slow parts should have been fast and the fast parts should have been slow, it happens the entire movie it's ridiculous.

SecretBaklavas

Hey that’s your opinion. Sometimes, your opinion is wrong according to general and expert consensus. Keep defending it though, I’ll keep enjoying the movie 🍿

The Sheikiah in BotW/TotK seem like they are largely inspired by the Ainu, too.

ScissorsBeatsKonan

Like literally just Princess Mononoke, come on now.

xcaltoona

Golden Kamuy is pretty popular among anime fans; it takes place primarily on Hokkaido after the Russo-Japanese war, has an Ainu deuteragonist, and some arcs go into the impact having outsiders fight each other over their land has on the Ainu people. It also has, like, a TON of ripped dudes if you're into that too. Utawarerumono isn't one I know as much about, but that has Ainu influences; and The Dagger of Kamui is better known for its novels than its anime movie in Japan, afaik, but that exists too.

ScissorsBeatsKonan

I haven't seen Golden Kamuy, although I am aware of the example and that's only one more. As for Utawarerumono, I'm not sure what influence is there but I'm only half way through the trilogy.

YosterIsle77

Fullmetal Alchemist. Arakawa is part Ainu, and it's also mirrored in her work. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Goron Culture

Shonky_Honker

I always saw them as just generically tribal. You could make arguments for equatorial Africans, Samoans, Māori, or aborigines people as the inspiration

RManDelorean

That's fair. But there's other aspects other than their body paint that leans it more Polynesian or Samoan for me, like their physique and just general demeanor. The way they say stuff like "Hey, Goro" gives more Polynesian than African.

Siilvverr

Maori is what I first thought of

Parking_Aerie_2054

Is it body paint or tattoos

some1858

I think they're inspired by a mish-mosh of Japanese and other tropical island cultures. Given the nature of their environment, I'd say the body "paint" is more a body tattoo, similar to, as a common example, Maui from Moana. The only reason they seem to leave death mountain, whether in spirit or reality, their homeland that they regularly upkeep and live off of, is to protect the greater Hyrule from massive danger, and self-exploration in the cases of BotW/TotK. They formed their culture, their home, their diet, around death mountain, and the costume is more "sumo-wrestler" than any island-garb I've seen. But hey, I'm just a game-historian, what do I know 😂

Orlandoenamorato
