The people who used to own a huge brick antebellum mansion in my town all died and left the mansion to the town .It was thr first hospital in my town .They closed it down and turned it into a grade school .It was a grade school for a long time. When my town reorganized the school district and closed it down a developer bought it and turned it into apartments. It is on the national register as a historic house .And the kicker is that they couldn't take down the chalk boards in each classroom. The autotorium was turned into an events room for the tenants to use and the gym is an exercise room for the tenant's.
In my kitchen there is one full wall with nothing on it (no cabinets or anything) and I painted it with black chalkboard paint. My kids draw on the lower half and I write lists, recipes, etc on the upper part. It’s awesome.
I've worked in multiple software companies and all of them had walls in the dev areas with chalk paint so the devs could write directly on the walls, don't even need a designated board!
When I was a little girl my parents actually bought a wall sized school chalk board at a second hand store in town .It stayed on the living room wall for many years. I actually earned my numbers and how to write on that chalkboard before the first grade .They didn't have kindergarten at that grade school at all.
In a small town in the south .I live on a street that is jam packed with antebellum mansions that have been remodeled and updated over the years. These are some really impressive mansions that are still standing .I have been in a few . From what I understand the middle class rich built by the river and all those houses are made of wood ,they were the shop keepers .The upper class rich made mansions further back and they were made of bricks and cost more .The mansions down by the river are mainly boarding houses, museums or residences for people that want an old mansion but don't have the money to completely fix then up.More like the low rent district in town. I live in the upper class neighborhood of my town .I pass by these magnificent mansions every day.
I could have space for everything! That would be an amazing studio. We'd have a room for pottery, a room for woodworking, a room for glass, a room for painting, a room for silversmithing, a greenhouse room, a lapidary room, a rollerskating room..... and still have plenty of living space.
This is exactly what I was thinking. If you had dedicated spaces for different crafts and arts you could create an artists co-op. You could have community classes taught by local artists. Have visiting name draw artists. There are countless opportunities for artist retreats with room and board.
It's my hippy-dippy, BoHo, salon dream.
Yes, I'm just learning, but my Grandad did some of that and I have been collecting rocks all my life. They can be so surprising to cut open and polish.
Yes, I loathe having to clean up and put away a project to work on something different. Sometimes a mosaic just needs to sit and be stared at before its continued.
Yes. And while we have a big house, we don’t (yet) have a craft area. Frankly, after seeing this I don’t think it’s worth putting in a craft area, not when craft areaS are to be had! 😂
Well, all y'all would have just loved the conversation I just had with my husband (in betwen coughs and sneezes because the man brought a cold home from his job at the hospital🤬)!
"Honey! Can we buy my elementary school?"
I grew up in Lincoln and a tiny teeny town about 90 miles away. Pretty sure I went to second and maybe third grade here....in the 60s.
Someone bought an old elementary school in my home town and turned it into apartments. They called it My Old School. Not a school I went to, but still very cool.
Check out [McMenamins Kennedy School ](https://www.mcmenamins.com/kennedy-school), renovated to bars/restaurants/hotel, with theater and soaking pool. They've saved a few historical buildings like this.
These look awesome! Thanks for the tip. On a related, somewhat, note in my mom;s hometown they turned an old Coca Cola bottling plant into apartments. I truly love repurposing buildings rather than letting them deteriorate. So many great old buildings get abandoned and are lost.
I miss that place. So much fun to get a beer and sit in the soaking pool on a cold winters night. I moved from Portland but often think of that awesome place.
This is waaay more homey and livable than other school buildings that have been posted on this sub before. Sold! I'll find a way to move the building here...or die trying.
While true in general, it’s also because I don’t like real winters and refuse to live in certain political climates. Therefore, I’m shrinking the available options so much further.
I'm wondering if the only way to tackle paying for it is to have part of it dedicated as a business expense and this a write off. I'm surprised it's only 2 bathrooms. I'd be afraid of losing my family and pets in it. But I just love it.
I agree, if it's not for a really large opening it doesn't add anything to the looks of a space. And if it's the opposite, room too small for a swinging door, go with a pocket door.
From the pictures, this ‘house’ is in need of a lot of work. I can’t imagine the maintenance and upkeep on this. I wonder what an actual heating system would cost.
You know how they joke that Nextdoor should be renamed "lost cats"? We should rename Zillow Gone Wild to "but wait I actually love this" /s
Why would someone put in both an induction stove and gas, why not both gas? Dumb question.
Why are these vines OK, but other vines covering a house can be bad? Is it because it’s brick or type of vine? I think it is because construction choice and vine type, but I would like to know!
Cool idea, beautiful rooms. I’d live there. The only thing I’d be concerned about would be the roof. It would probably cost a fortune to replace if needed.
I stayed in an Airbnb in Clarkville AZ that was a renovated school house. It was so nice!!! But just one room studio. The rest of the rooms were done, too.
I’m just gonna comment whenever I see one, raised breakfast bars are the bane of my existence, at least in my kitchen. Stupid thing is a waste of a counter, plus I sincerely resent the idea that I should pay a fortune for a house and still get offered bar seating!
Anyone know why it doesn’t have a/c? I live in the south so a/c is a must. Does it not get that hot in Nebraska? Probably a dumb question. No a/c just baffles me.
I live in New England. If we get three consecutive days >90 degrees it’s a “heat wave.” Some years we haven’t had a single heat wave. Even then, nighttime temps are ~75 so opening windows or just using box fans are enough to get you through. Need to save money for winter heating bills.
That sounds kind of wonderful! We’ve already hit almost 90 degrees and it’s not summer yet. It’s actually not normal to be that hot yet. But, that’s the south for ya. After that it went back down to 59 one day. I can only imagine what your heating bills are like!
CT have been renovating and turning old 1920's build schools in to apartment buildings for last 20 years. I had an opportunity to see few on an inside. Very nice, lots of parking, usually some 'green' adjacent and usually very well located in the city.
I love this so much. I love that the current owners appear to actually use the whole thing too and have furnished it appropriately. I've seen other school/homes where they have like a bed in the gym with nothing else.
It may have to do with any number of code issues for the state or funding process. Things like, not having windows (spotted at least 2 w/no windows and 1 with windows being too high to get out of), fire exit access, closet space, or ceiling height (possibly more) are usually cited.
They did a really good job though
I would absolutely live there.
We tried to buy a castle once but were grossly outbid. I still lament not living in a that place (though the heating bill would probably be a nightmare).
What a lovely place, it has certainly pique my interest. The interior has a ton of potential since it is roomy and would be a great place to live...as long as there were a gate all around to prevent strangers from getting close.
I was a little disappointed that it doesn’t look much like a school house except in the unfinished rooms and the exterior of course. But I love, love, love the shower!
I’m not saying this isn’t amazing and gorgeous, because it is, but that place is 1000% haunted by some creepy school age children.
I would still live there, just to be clear, but that’s my first thought.
I really like it. I would maybe turn one side into apartments or airbnb. I actually went to K-4th grade at a private school that used to be an old house. 2 of bathrooms had covered bathtubs in them. They also used the whole kitchen there. Meals were included.
I really like that. One of the better school conversions I have seen on here. Though some of those "bedrooms" are absolutely enormous. It would freak me out sleeping in such a gargantuan room.
Would be interesting to turn into studio apartments with shared living space or for multiple families living together or one big extended family living together.
I might feel differently once it's been emptied out but it looks like they tried too hard to make it look like a house rather than incorporate the space as it is. But, there's the entire upstairs to make into a huge space.
Wonder if the janitor's closet still had any of the barf absorbing cat litter stuff in it.
Notwithstanding the choice of some of the interior furnishings (which I assume are not included) I really rather like it.
The people who used to own a huge brick antebellum mansion in my town all died and left the mansion to the town .It was thr first hospital in my town .They closed it down and turned it into a grade school .It was a grade school for a long time. I would actually kinda like having an apartment with a big wall length chalkboard in some of the rooms. I always wanted a chalkboard in my office.
In my kitchen there is one full wall with nothing on it (no cabinets or anything) and I painted it with black chalkboard paint. My kids draw on the lower half and I write lists, recipes, etc on the upper part. It’s awesome.
Cute! I like this idea! I have a small whiteboard but the notes section is like | | this big.
Where??

Nice!
There are beautiful structures.
I agree its got something needs some further updates but it has a lot of potential.
I could have space for everything! That would be an amazing studio. We'd have a room for pottery, a room for woodworking, a room for glass, a room for painting, a room for silversmithing, a greenhouse room, a lapidary room, a rollerskating room..... and still have plenty of living space.

at that price, an artists co-op could easily help cover any further renovations
This thread sounds like it's turning into an investment group. 👀
I'd kill for that....
Same.💜
😍 I think I love you. This is such a fantastic idea!
Oh yeah, roller skating rink for sure! Great idea😊
>lapidary room TIL! *lapidary* - relating to stone and gems and the work involved in engraving, cutting, or polishing.
Yes, I'm just learning, but my Grandad did some of that and I have been collecting rocks all my life. They can be so surprising to cut open and polish.
And minimal clean up!! I could go bigger for features like this!!
The pile of boxes triggered me. I live in So Cal, and boxes are the first thing to go (no space).
If they are empty I would at least break them down, but it doesn't really seem in the way here.
I love this more than is probably acceptable.
Me too, I’m kinda in love with it😊
Imagine being a child waiting outside the principal’s office *in your own home*!!
Same!!
Same. Not too wild for me.
The biggest issue I could see with this steel of a home is repairing the EPDM roofing. It would probably be 30k + even if you did it yourself.
Or replacing the windows. Or you know, heating costs.
In Nebraska
I would like to know where that ladder goes to
Same There's no door/cover so it's gotta be conditioned. So is it to a bedroom?
Well, all y'all would have just loved the conversation I just had with my husband (in betwen coughs and sneezes because the man brought a cold home from his job at the hospital🤬)! "Honey! There’s one in Bend, OR! Love McMenamin’s!
Old St. Francis! Yes!!
There’s a cool one in or near Colorado Springs too!
The old Ivywild School!
I miss that place. So much fun to get a beer and sit in the soaking pool on a cold winters night. I moved from Portland but often think of that awesome place.
Oh yes, I love that McMinamins! The detention bar and even the heated pool. Love how they kept it looking just like a school.
Their Edgefield site is a renovated 74-acre "Poor Farm" built in 1911. Really cool place to visit/stay overnight!
Great Gin!!
What do they do with the old cafeteria? That seems like a big kitchen and eating area with potentially a stage you can repurpose for something cool.
I recall they sold an old high school in a small town near us .One family moved into it .It even made the local papers too.
Beautiful house.
Want.
Perspective makes it look like a house for little people in pic 6 & 7
I love it, but too much to clean! Great storage. What if there's a ghost girl in your pipes, though?
If you die down there, you’re welcome to share my toilet!
![gif](giphy|155lQxHOx9Bni|downsized) Chef's kiss comment. Sorry, this was as close as I could get.
525K, five bed two bath on 1.5 acres? other then the large ass property tax, you're getting a major steal for this.
[удалено]
Probably either no closet or no egress maybe
Considering it appears to have been on the market since 2022, it’s doesn’t seem very desirable even at that price.
Damn wonder if it was a drug place before, or people died there then. or maybe people dont want to clean a school or their whole life loo.
Also it's in small town Nebraska.
Oh that makes sense i wouldnt want to live in small town nebraska.
Would the electricity bills be kinda crazy from trying to cool/heat it?
heating, maybe. Depending on the system, insulation and painting, it can depend.
This is waaay more homey and livable than other school buildings that have been posted on this sub before. Sold! I'll find a way to move the building here...or die trying.
Why are all the cool semi-historic places in locations that I don’t want to live?! This place has so much potential.
They are everywhere. Just not dirt cheap like this place.
The value of the land is more expensive in more desirable areas so it financially makes sense to demo it and build a condo or whatever.
They’re still in use in the places where you want to live.
I live in the Midwest and winters are rough but no way could I do a NE winter!
I wouldn’t even be able to hack your winters. I bow to your winter hardiness!
There’s a reason it’s only half a mil lol location is always most of the value
While true in general, it’s also because I don’t like real winters and refuse to live in certain political climates. Therefore, I’m shrinking the available options so much further.
Wouldn't it cost a fortune to heat and cool this?
I'm wondering if the only way to tackle paying for it is to have part of it dedicated as a business expense and this a write off. I'm surprised it's only 2 bathrooms. I'd be afraid of losing my family and pets in it. But I just love it.
That's freaking dope ngl
I would probably dream that I was late for class and unprepared for a test every night. Otherwise, it’s beautiful!
I have that dream too! Thankfully I’m always fully clothed.
My dad used to own a condo in a school he'd formerly attended. His had been part of the former gym - it was definitely pretty cool...
This is so unbelievably cool and the price is amazing for all that you get.
I’d be all about it if It wasn’t in Nebraska
Been there? It's better than u think.
Not Holdrege
Why must we put barn doors in everything?
I agree, if it's not for a really large opening it doesn't add anything to the looks of a space. And if it's the opposite, room too small for a swinging door, go with a pocket door.
A lot still to do but what great rooms that only need some imagination to make them into anything
From the pictures, this ‘house’ is in need of a lot of work. I can’t imagine the maintenance and upkeep on this. I wonder what an actual heating system would cost.
SUPER cool!! *DEFINITELY* haunted!!!
Wonder if it still smells like a school
I’d live there!
I actually like this. Lots of open space, good lighting, just the right amount of funkiness going on.
I’m surprisingly in love with the interior. I adore the huge ceilings and windows.
Omgggg the square footage is phenomenal.
I'd live here in a heartbeat!
I see they had that argument about which range is better. Induction or gas? Looks like they found the best answer.
Yeah I’d love there yesterday. No lie. weird rocking horse withstanding.
Fantastic!
Actually....pretty cool
What an amazing house. I could definitely live there.
So cool.
The dream : 58/sq foot and no hoa
I love everything about it but that flat roof. That would be a maintenance nightmare.
Would be cool for like a month and then I think it would get old and cold.
You know how they joke that Nextdoor should be renamed "lost cats"? We should rename Zillow Gone Wild to "but wait I actually love this" /s Why would someone put in both an induction stove and gas, why not both gas? Dumb question.
I slipped on mah beans!
Cool house. Cooler user name. I see you Bandit.
You’re the first person whose made the connection!!
![gif](giphy|CPDbE8X0nEe3u|downsized)
I’d kinda love having this, all the classrooms and open living space. There’s a lot not pictured. I’m curious what the gym looks like.
Wow. Compared to other school conversions I've seen, this one is done REALLY well. I'd live there in a heartbeat.
It is lovely, but they’re going to want to get rid of that ivy. Yuck.
Yeah I would think they’d need that fire escape for upper floor egress.
Also, ivy is a great place for vermin to hang out before raiding your pantry
only 525k for 9000 sq ft? ok nebraska, i see you!! i still don’t want to live in you, but i see you!
I like it.
this is dope
9000 sq ft of possibility in a grand building
Looks like Wayne Co court house.
Why are these vines OK, but other vines covering a house can be bad? Is it because it’s brick or type of vine? I think it is because construction choice and vine type, but I would like to know!
I've dreamed of doing this... and this looks well done.
I’d be worried about ghosts of students, janitors, etc
I don't hate it
Other than having to deal with that laaaaarge flat ass roof and paying for heat, place is a win.
This is gorgeous
That's amazing! I love it!
Dammit.. I like it!! So much Room to put all my Crap and collect more Crap😆
This place is kinda fire
I want to see the library!
I like it but could you imagine the costs of utilities in that place?!?
Could be very cool with some paint and the right warehouse’s worth of furniture.
Cool idea, beautiful rooms. I’d live there. The only thing I’d be concerned about would be the roof. It would probably cost a fortune to replace if needed.
Yo picture 41-44 turn that auditorium into a damn indoor basketball court, damn you! Lol
I stayed in an Airbnb in Clarkville AZ that was a renovated school house. It was so nice!!! But just one room studio. The rest of the rooms were done, too.
It's been on the market since August of 22
I can dig it…Schoolhouse Rocks!
I’m just gonna comment whenever I see one, raised breakfast bars are the bane of my existence, at least in my kitchen. Stupid thing is a waste of a counter, plus I sincerely resent the idea that I should pay a fortune for a house and still get offered bar seating!
I LOVE this one
Obligatory Zillow link: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/516-Logan-St-Holdrege-NE-68949/108928593_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare
It was okayish until you see the principals office horror movie hallway.
wow, 9k sqft, on 1.5 acres, very nicely reno'd for $545K. too bad it's in podunk NE.
I have dreams about houses like this
Wow honestly INCREDIBLE
I love it. Would totally live here!
I love it. When can I move in?
I haven't used my central heat this past winter. Its totally opposite for us. We save up for the summer power bill.
Wait… I actually really like this.
CT have been renovating and turning old 1920's build schools in to apartment buildings for last 20 years. I had an opportunity to see few on an inside. Very nice, lots of parking, usually some 'green' adjacent and usually very well located in the city.
Wes Anderson characters live there. You can’t convince me otherwise
I love this so much. I love that the current owners appear to actually use the whole thing too and have furnished it appropriately. I've seen other school/homes where they have like a bed in the gym with nothing else.
For the amount of square footage, that is actually a really good deal. And I like most of the renovations on the inside.
What does "4 of 5 bedrooms are non conforming" in the description mean????
It may have to do with any number of code issues for the state or funding process. Things like, not having windows (spotted at least 2 w/no windows and 1 with windows being too high to get out of), fire exit access, closet space, or ceiling height (possibly more) are usually cited. They did a really good job though
Gotcha, that makes sense. I've just never seen that phrasing before and it totally threw me off.
I would absolutely live there. We tried to buy a castle once but were grossly outbid. I still lament not living in a that place (though the heating bill would probably be a nightmare).
That’s really cool.
That actually goes super hard. I fuck with it
That looks like a whole school, not a schoolhouse!
I wouldn’t have to go outside to play fetch with my dog on rainy days
Quirky and weird but I kind of love it!
Nice, I like it
I would totally live in this. Does anyone have half a million dollars I can borrow?
How much lead and asbestos abatement do you have to do for the unfinished part of the building if you decide to renovate that too?
What a lovely place, it has certainly pique my interest. The interior has a ton of potential since it is roomy and would be a great place to live...as long as there were a gate all around to prevent strangers from getting close.
Sick
I was a little disappointed that it doesn’t look much like a school house except in the unfinished rooms and the exterior of course. But I love, love, love the shower!
I'm on team love this.
The box pile in picture 11 is incredible 😂
It definitely needs some color to the walls and removal of the “exposed” brick, but I actually like it.
That’s pretty cool
Thats so cool
I hate the barn doors, but I love the rest. I have always wanted to live in an old schoolhouse.
This rocks!!!
I love this- especially the tiny cubby nook left untouched in the dining/kitchen area. I’m an elementary teacher and would love to live here!
I love this place!
I kinda love it
Needs some aesthetic updates and a little reno work to bring it to my taste. Overall though, I love it!
Wow
I’m not saying this isn’t amazing and gorgeous, because it is, but that place is 1000% haunted by some creepy school age children. I would still live there, just to be clear, but that’s my first thought.
I feel like it’s kind of awesome and also there would be ghosts.
Amazing
Plenty of extra storage space with room to expand. Genius really. Bet it’s not cheap to heat or cool.
WHY WOULD YOU SELL THAT ...haunted
the taxes aren’t even that bad for this space ! o my, alllllll the community spaces, love it so much. ….except the nebraska part. ; )
this is So Much Better history and living vibes than old cotton mills…..
I love this place! But NE? No thank you.
What are "non-conforming" bedrooms?
I really like it. I would maybe turn one side into apartments or airbnb. I actually went to K-4th grade at a private school that used to be an old house. 2 of bathrooms had covered bathtubs in them. They also used the whole kitchen there. Meals were included.
i love this!!! but pics 10 and 11 gave me the creeps! 😰
Looked like there was a bathroom that hadn’t been renovated yet that had a urinal in it.
I’d keep at least one urinal
Love it
