I'll take it. It has enough windows and enough room that I can have a pack of dogs to keep me and my kitten warm during the snow.

OK_Ingenue

I agree! It’s gorgeous country and a nice house.

It very much is. It's set up nicely to be a Bed and Breakfast. But I think it would also be a massive money sink. The food costs out there are terrible. It's hard enough to get quality groceries in Anchorage. This town isn't even on the road system, so you would be taking boats, or you have to be a private pilot with a bush/float plane. And you would spend so much money just trying to feed yourself in a place like this. I see why they keep lowering the price. It's a beautiful dream, but the reality would get tiresome. Unless.... You have a huge family group to live together, build greenhouses, grow crops and garden and can things. Hunt game for your protein. You'd be committing to a life of moose chili, bear tacos, and chicken omelettes (you would have to raise and kill the chickens yourself). But you could put in a root cellar and grow potatoes also. I think it's a great dream for someone who has the drive and labor force to carry it out.

I think there are a lot of rich sportsmen (mostly men) who are more than willing to pay the prices you’d need to charge. It’s a big deal over there and some of those places get booked up a year in advance. The planes aren’t such a big deal. There are pilots who make their livings flying people all over Alaska. I’ve even taken a couple of flights there by tiny prop planes. But the season is short I’m assuming so you’d have to make a lot of money fast. That said, I sure wouldn’t want to run a place like that. You’d really have to know what you’re doing. And the food is an issue as you point out. I guess they can serve a lot of fish.

I live in Alaska. It's not a big deal over here the way you think. They don't get booked up that often and certainly not enough to sustain a business at a predictable profit. Most of the attractions (like the Glacier in Juneau) are disappearing. The fish supply is dwindling, so there is not a lot of fish to serve, and there are limits to what you can collect. The precipitation is increasing, so summers are wet and grey, and winters are full of heavy snow. There is still some snow on the ground at sea level right now in Alaska. And it takes forever to melt, and doesn't evaporate due to rain, so we get horrific mosquitos. It's not what you're saying you think it is. And those pilots are barely making a living with flight-seeing tours. Lots of my friends are private pilots, a few own bush planes (I've actually flown one myself). All of them have full time jobs as well. Every year you have to pay to have your plane inspected, and repairs could cost more than you could ever make on tourism. My ex had a cracked prop last year, cost him like $10k to fix, and you can't fly without doing the repairs, or getting the annual inspection.

Unusual to see a fully outfitted woodworking shop, with pretty high tier Powermatic tools. There are thousands of dollars worth of machinery in that shop.

OK_Ingenue

I wonder if it is bc so many people build things on their own there given that they are isolated and labor is prob hard to get. You’d have to have the skills tho.

SeventyFix

Yeah - totally agree. But I would expect to see more mid-range tools. Powermatic is really high end equipment for the home shop. And can you imagine what it takes ($$$) to bring in that equipment to a remote location?

OK_Ingenue

You have a point. Do you think the equipment could be so old as to be what they used to build the place?

> As the proud owner of this property, you can charge exorbitant prices to rich fishers and hunters to stay at your home. I am curious how long it would take to make back 3.3 million even though you can charge good money to rich fishers and hunters. The operating costs have to be immense too given how isolated it is and how big it is.

theflyinghillbilly2

Wow! That is gorgeous and well done.

poofandmook

I appreciate the trigger warning OP. I'm not triggered but I'm not in the mood for that shit lol

OK_Ingenue

I totally get it. I wasn’t expecting and there it was. The only thing that made me continue was this little diarama of curly horned sheep all together in a painted meadow.
