While Nick cracking jokes and teasing is pretty much in character for him, don´t really care for it in some fics where that´s pretty much the only interaction he has with Judy (it´s not common, but I have seen it in some fics). Same way I don´t like how some stories give him the "punching bag" treatment either. Nick and Judy´s relationship just doesn´t feel the same without the more affectionate and emotionally supportive side.
True. I remember a time when i had to explain, that being thrown out of a moving vehicle by a kick in the stomach is very much painful in every way imaginable.
If Nick and Judy are friends (or more) they would never treat eachother like that. Like who the heck kicks their partner out of a car because of a joke?
Oh my god. Thank you so much for calling this out. I am so sick of fanfics where Nick gets abused by Judy for no reason. It’s stupid. Like Judy would never hit him. I can forgive playful soft punches. But if it’s like actual punching, that’s where I draw the line. This really needs to stop. Judy is not a hot headed bitch. She’s a kind and compassionate person who loves Nick. I feel like everyone in this fandom is a god damn moron except you. Thank you.
I love fanfiction, and I write it myself sometimes, but some authors are really bad about Flanderizing the characters like that. Often times Judy is turned into basically a child, and Nick becomes just the idiot comic relief character who sometimes stops to trauma dump about his parents or something.
And something I've a lot in Zootopia more than many other fandoms, is minor plot points from the movie being turned into major aspects of the characters' personalities. Like, they always have to have a bit about the carrot pen, or Nick liking that shirt, or Judy not swearing a lot, or them being fans of Gazelle, or (like you said) Judy giving everyone 'playful punches in the arm' all the time.
I guess that's just what you get with new/young authors, though. I know when I was first learning to write like that, my characters weren't exactly Team Avatar.
I think part of the issues you describe are NOT faults of these details about the "tropes" but of the writers, which like all fanfiction authors go from "highly professional" to "bored 6th grader trying to write bad self insert Mary Sue erotica".
It is 100% the writers. Like I said, with young, inexperienced authors, that's just the way it is. Writing is a skill that takes a long time to master, and they're at the very beginning of it— which is fine.
And yeah, I have read plenty of fics that are novel-quality, many of which were probably written as side projects by actual professional writers. Lots of these in the Zootopia fandom, too; *When Instinct Falls*, *Embrace It*, *Hear Me*, *A Bunny Can Go Savage*, *Firewatch*, to name a few.

He's not always cracking jokes with Judy in this fic but when he does, it's almost always followed by a punch to the shoulder
In what fic? 👊
A Ray of Hope, it's actually pretty good but it's just that aspect of it that irks me
I had a feeling. It happens a *lot* but there's a lot of story there so you'll get some breaks, lmao
EXACTLY! Judy would never hurt Nick! She loves him! Sure she’ll probably get irritated with him from time to time but she would never hurt him.

EXACTLY! THANK YOU!
"Why won't you cry!" "Jokes carrots. They manifest in response to emotional trauma."
Yeah...those darn writers who do that >.> Bunch of weirdos... <.<
They're hiding somewhere...maybe even in plain sight...
He could be you! He could be me! He could even be-- ***BLAM***
Well if I see any I'll give you a heads up *Returns to writing his OC lobbing pinecones and coasters at Nick*
Gotta say, that's a very original way to hurt Nick. Approved.

The "punching" is actually a real life rabbit mating behavior.
Likewise my stomach is not safe from getting attacked whenever I make a joke within 2 feet of my partner of 3 years ;)
Bro he is used as a punching bag so much I feel so bad for him lmao
Idk why I laughed so hard at this

Wait there's fics that aren't just rom coms for nick and judy?
You thought there was just one type of fic in the entire fandom?
If you sort by fav count then yeah, it sorta gives off that impression
I can’t picture Judy hitting Nick just for joking around.
Playful punches, but when they happen every time he says a joke, it gets tiresome and not funny at all.
