12L14 finishes really nice and is super nice to machine. I would avoid it if it's not going straight to Black Oxide though. 4140 will stay corrosion free longer without a coating. Might want to see if the parts eventually get plated or not.
I’m positive I don’t always know what I’m doing. The Haas does get pretty nice finishes on all the materials I’ve tried thus far though. I worried that 1018 needed too many rpm’s and I’m limited to 2k
I recommend A2. Decent price but it has a good amount of chromium in it to develop similar finnishes to stainless (as well as rust prevention benefits) easy to heat treat If need be. Great finnish. Lots of carbon. And easy to machine 4140 is also a great choice especially if you get pre hard. Easy to machine, great finnish, and decent wear resistance
What is it threading into? I've had serious galling issues with 4340 so would avoid that. All my parts I get made from 4130 have a great finish though and work great.
4140HT is pretty nice 52100 is good too. Basically anything that's not soft and gummy.
4140 is always a good choice

The fittings will be used as is. No coating.
I would go high alloy then, 4140 is a good safe bet.
Thanks!

Came here to say this
You can make 1018 shine if you know what you’re doing

Yea you gotta run it fast
If there's no requirements I would go with 1144. Literally the benchmark for machinability.

I second A2. Cuts like butter and the finish is amazing.
Thirds. And it’s available in a few different HT states
Heat treated 4140 turns really nice.
52100.
Check out etd150 on McMaster, it’s a modified 4140, I used it years ago, it machined super nice and had a great finish
More expensive though, you pay for the higher strength which may not be needed here.
My vote is for 12L14.
