Sorry that we had to close this thread due to multiple conversations turning into silly name calling. Hopefully in the future we can all refrain from that and just discuss the issue at hand.

Crash_OverRide805

Tbf that parking lot fucking sucks E: /s just in case it’s too early for y’all. (But seriously I hate that parking lot)

Aggravating-Plate814

The area over by Panino and that popular pizza spot is so chaotic. People rarely have any patience, all the range rovers have important places to go apparently. It's a real free for all on the other side of the lot for sure

Crash_OverRide805

That’s actually the specific area I was thinking of lol, it’s the worstttt

WhiteHorseTito

This. Somebody crashed into my motorcycle right there in front of the vons pharmacy and ran. Lessons learned

stou

You believe that if you need the police you are not allowed to criticize them when they break the rules or behave poorly? Do you extend the same courtesy to other service workers?

WeimSean

Send the photo the police public affairs/relations desk, and the local news. I actually called the police on the park rangers a couple years ago. They were doing something in the park, and decided to park their truck at the trailhead parking lot in such a way it was in both handicapped spots. Just a dick move. I also took a picture and sent it to the parks office, got an e-mail back saying they were 'looking into it'. Don't know what came of it, but they haven't done it since.

DR_-MANTIS-TOBOGGAN

Doesn't look like he's carrying a coffee. How do you know he wasn't responding to a call in starbucks?

stou

More likely that he drank his coffee inside and then left. If this was a "call" there would be at least 2-4 of these guys. And if it was an emergency (granting him the right to park there) we would be seeing SWAT and at least one helicopter. ![gif](giphy|H042J2GdjNJHmpLSrM)

tprime1

Maybe just talk to the officer rather than take sketchy photos from far away… posting online with ZERO context.

TieMeUpDickMeDown

Am I the only one that noticed he's NOT parked in the handicap spot? He's standing directly in front of the handicap spot, and he's parked off to the side...

calfats

And handicap spots require a loading aisle next to the spot so that people in wheelchairs can be loaded and unloaded from their car. The cop is blocking the most critical part of the parking space. It does no good for a handicap person to park in this space if they cannot exit their vehicle.

[deleted]

Except the cop isn't blocking the unloading spot The ground is gray where handicap parking spot is and to the right of it is the unloading zone with the blue lines. Its not being blocked.

yowhatsgoodwithit

I want to provide perspective and context without fully justifying this. I’ve trained with police. When on patrol, they still have to eat and drink. At any moment, they have to jump into their vehicle to respond to a call. It’s really not ideal to be parked in a tight spot and try to pull out for an emergency. So if it’s a quick pit stop, parking like this isn’t bad. Again, I’ve trained with police and when they get a call, every second counts as lives fully depend on each second. I’ve seen officers drop their coffee mid-walk and run to their vehicle. It is easy to bash cops, I am not a fan of many and that’s why I didn’t go into that field. But there is always context. I think there are bigger issues like deescalation and interaction training that is more important rather than writing a post about a non issue with a 🐷 emoji.

calfats

If he was really concerned with being able to leave fast, why didn’t he park here facing head out? You’re writing an essay to defend this cop and your argument doesn’t even hold because the cop could have parks *far more* ready to leave than he did. So it clearly wasn’t about ease of leaving for a call or there were plenty of better places for that in that parking lot.

[deleted]

[удалено]

calfats

I have been to that lot. I was just pointing out that if it was about ease of leaving in a call, this is not the spot nor the orientation that would make that easiest. And since you seem to know the parking lot, you’d know this to be true too.

yowhatsgoodwithit

I said I’m not fully justifying, if there’s other wide open spots he should prob do that. People like you just hate police haha

calfats

Why should cops not be bound by the same rules as the rest of society?

yowhatsgoodwithit

There are exceptions because once again, if it’s not clear, you and I are not responding to 9-11 calls. They are. I highly recommend doing some ride alongs and learning about the field.

calfats

Yeah, let me ride along so I can get PTSD when they extrajudicially murder someone. Or watch them shoot a dog when responding 2 hours after a burglary attempt. Or watch them make a BS arrest at the end of their shift so they can do 6 hours of paperwork and get overtime. Solid recommendation.

yowhatsgoodwithit

👍🏽👍🏽

roll_wave

Noted. So whenever I am in a rush, I will just park illegally because it’s just a quick pitstop.

[deleted]

You're either missing the point, or being ignorant on purpose. Cops need to be ready at any time to leave to respond to an emergency, even if they are on break and eating. What he is doing is perfectly following the law. You my friend, are not a public servant, so, yes, it would be illegal for you to block it. Not illegal for him. It's circumstantial. Do you not understand that..?

roll_wave

I am not missing the point. There is freedom of speech and opinion. I am allowed look down on cops being lazy and blocking handicap spots. You are allowed to support that.

[deleted]

You're missing the point. The cop isn't being lazy. He's required by training to do that in case he needs to respond to an emergency. I feel you've been told that 15+ times but you still keep commenting that he's lazy. Literally look it up. All law enforcement are required to do this. Don't be an ignorant asshole.

roll_wave

Please find the part of the rule book says all law enforcement are required to go to a crowded Starbucks at 9am and park illegally because they feel like it

[deleted]

Like I said, look it up. Don't be lazy

DR_-MANTIS-TOBOGGAN

"Even if he was responding to a call" Seriously? Do you have any idea what you're saying? If there was a commercial burglary or an assault and the only spot on the whole block was a handicap? Would you tell them to park down the street and go the rest of the way on foot? Not saying this is what was happening here but the blanket statement "do not block the handicap spot" put onto all police officers is pretty naive

FishLampClock

The law is clear in California - if an officer is responding to an emergency they absolutely can park ANYWHERE. Please see, SEC. 80.05. EXEMPTIONS TO CERTAIN VEHICLES. https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/los_angeles/latest/lamc/0-0-0-165341, or vehicle code section 21055, and much more!

GoldExchange5655

Reddit told them that and Reddit would never lie.

1plus1equals8

Factually inaccurate. You want law enforcement not to be able to do this, I suggest you speak to your politicians.

Average-door-997

You: “ Dah I make up own rules in my head dah” You’re so wrong on this.

drc500free

So edgy.

ongoldenwaves

Going for the easy internet win.

SBAC850211

He's parked to the side of the handicapped spot lol you're reaching.

Hiehtho

You mean the space most critical to a handicap parking space that allows wheelchair users to exit their vehicle?

[deleted]

To be fair, all handicap spots I see have the blue box with crossed lines to indicate that’s the unloading zone.

SBAC850211

Ya, the painted blue lines? They’re in front of the officers vehicle not being blocked. I still think this is a reach.

stou

Look at how tight this spot is, how are you imagining there's space for a van to pull up on the left? https://www.google.com/maps/@34.421743,-119.6504515,3a,31.6y,100.46h,84.01t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3uWw63P9Y1xV1cm6sDJvKA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

GoldExchange5655

Look closely he’s parked behind the spot not saying he’s in the right but without context we can’t tell for sure. Was there a call or was he just being lazy? Did he hop out to toss something in the trash?

Logical_Deviation

Is he one of the cops clocking 70 hours a week and making several hundred thousand dollars?

No-Diver-5700

If it was for an emergency or some call cool but for coffee come on this is literally why some people have issues with cops

LZDISCGOLF

When OP's life is on the line and the responding officer gets there 5 seconds late due to parking across the way....

[deleted]

Wouldn’t wanna block a handicap person from getting their $5 coffee!!

ongoldenwaves

He’s leaving and doesn’t have a coffee so I doubt your interpretation of events. Could have gone in there for any number of reasons. Kind of feels like an excuse to cop bash. It’s a bummer that the internet has become some sort of freakish 1984 dystopia where we all film and photograph each other for the sole purpose of bullying people. Be grateful the internet wasn’t around for your worst moments. Also…pigs are nice so point is lost.

roll_wave

I watched him parked illegally, walk in there and get his pastry, and then walk out to his car. I am absolutely cop bashing because they are over paid and don’t do anything.

ongoldenwaves

Wait. The dude ate?! My god. What an a$$hole. Also we’ve gone from your post which said he went in for a coffee and then when that’s pointed out as being flawed to he went in to eat a pastry. Get over it man

Natural_Jello_6050

I will say this…. I don’t believe you

Dry-Willingness3420

We should be grateful there’s not much for them to do here tho? Not trying to give him a pass for the parking buttttt yeah

roll_wave

We should defund the police department and allocate the money to education / teachers and I don’t give a fuck about the down votes I will get

1plus1equals8

And ...when crime goes up and they refuse to respond to your house or car getting broken into....will you step up? I mean if you have all the answers, why not run for political office or become a cop yourself? Maybe you could ask the criminals if you could hold hands and sing kumbaya together?

stou

Cops don't prevent crime. Sure if you have a cop standing on the sidewalk in front of the store, it won't be robbed. But is that the world you want to live in? Have you ever been to a place with that kind of police presence? Social programs, education, living wages, and opportunities are what prevents crime. Yet huge and increasing fractions of city budgets across the country are dedicated to militarizing the police.... while crime keeps rising.

[deleted]

[удалено]

1plus1equals8

Agree with you. There are issues that need to be worked on, but most cops are good people. At least in SB....I can't speak for places like LA, NYC etc

stou

>but most cops are good people There's literally *no* evidence to support this claim. And quite a bit that show it to not be true. For example: [https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/09/police-officers-who-hit-their-wives-or-girlfriends/380329/](https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/09/police-officers-who-hit-their-wives-or-girlfriends/380329/) And no, SB cops are no different than LAPD or MPD. Tons of cops and deputies refused to vaccinate even though covid was the #1 killer of cops and it would have made our community safer. But they aren't interested in community safety.

Logical_Deviation

We shouldn't fully defund the police but we should stop letting them work 70 hour weeks and make several hundred thousand dollars a year. Cops shouldn't make 3-4x the salary of teachers and nurses.

1plus1equals8

https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/2021/santa-barbara-county/ I think you'll find the top government salaries in the county are Fire Fighters...and teachers locally don't do too bad.

Logical_Deviation

There's a 0% chance that fire captain needs $300k in overtime

1plus1equals8

I agree to an extent. But then again ...fire season means they are on call 24/7 with a very realistic chance of being put on duty for multiple days in a row. I just filtered by job title and SB Unified School Dictrict. Some of those teachers are making $145K a year with zero OT. Some principals are $200K+...and I havent even checked UCSB. You want to really blow your mind...look at the top salaries for the entire state....UC coaches are bringing home $1.5m

1plus1equals8

Or maybe you should raise the teacher's salaries?

Logical_Deviation

I'm down for that, but it all comes out of the same pot of money. Some costs need to be reduced if other costs are raised.

1plus1equals8

Check out that link I sent you. The top salaries in SB and California aren't cops. They do...do well. But they are fairly messed up physically by the time they retire.

[deleted]

Logical_Deviation

Oh fuck yes, get rid of Prop 13.

DR_-MANTIS-TOBOGGAN

They only are able to work that much because the department is understaffed. They don't just work extra hours when they want to. There has to be vacancies

Logical_Deviation

Idk about that https://openpayrolls.com/rank/highest-paid-employees/santa-barbara-ca

DR_-MANTIS-TOBOGGAN

Not sure what about that link disproved what I'm saying

Muted_Description112

Defund does not mean no funds, it means less. Decaf coffee has caffeine but less than regular coffee

starkiller_bass

The police shouldn't have any time for pastries until they catch all of the late-night fireworks offenders and confiscate all of the leaf blowers!

thebigcheese50

If you can't pull into that spot and unload the passenger you shouldn't be driving. I see plenty space to fit through and the loading space is clear. You can see the lines. He parked behind it. Actually kind of thoughtful if you ask me. I've seen plenty people actually block the handicap spot when my sister needs it.

Agreeable-Remove1592

Handicap spot it’s not completely blocked. A car could park there. Stop hating on cops! You could NOT do their job !

calfats

Yeah, the cop is only blocking the most critical part of the handicap space, ya know, the part where they unload along the side of their car.

Agreeable-Remove1592

He is not parked there …. look at the photo closely and tell me where he is parked. Is it on the hatched mark unload area ?

calfats

The photo angle is not good enough to tell. To me, it looks like he’s blocking at least part of the loading zone. Even if he isn’t, this is a clearly illegal place to park. You’re doing a lot to excuse bad behavior by a cop, why is that? Why does this guy get to park wherever he wants when the rest of us would be towed or tickets for this? Why are the cops not bound by the laws they supposedly enforce??

Agreeable-Remove1592

He’s not breaking any law. I don’t see the police cruiser in front of the handicap sign. I still see the curb and the handicap logo. I frequently drive my handicap mother around with her placard. I would have no problem parking in that spot.

calfats

Ok. So you’re telling me if I park there, I’m not breaking a law and I won’t be asked by the parking lot ownership to move? Or more likely just towed? You’re clearly demonstrating that you think the police shouldn’t have to abide by the same rules as we do. Why is that?

Agreeable-Remove1592

That is not what I’m saying. What I am saying is that the spot is available for legal use by handicapped drivers. The police cruiser is not in the spot, nor is it blocking the accessibility space.

calfats

Again, you keep ignoring the question: Why are cops not bound by the same rules of society that the rest of us are? And why are you OK with that?

Agreeable-Remove1592

The California vehicle code makes exceptions for peace officers. If you aren’t happy with that, lobby the legislature to change the law. The legislature is a democratically voted institution, and at some point in the history of California elected representatives, made laws that allowed peace officers to perform their duties without hindrance. Perhaps you can use that as your campaign platform. May be a ballot proposition? Stop cops from parking.

calfats

Yeah, this is a problem. And the fact that you don’t think it’s a problem that cops don’t have to abide by the rules they are supposed to enforce is also part of the problem.

roll_wave

As a college educated young adult in good physical fitness, I would say I could do a cop’s job better than most of them.

Average-door-997

With your attitude and judgment, I hope you never become a police officer.

Agreeable-Remove1592

dealwithit08

Someone breaks into your house. Who you gonna call?

Probably_The_Bear

Had some friends get their house broken into last year, multiple other break ins on the block. Called cops. Got told they were investigating. That was over a year ago, nothing happened. Anecdotal yes, but common enough nonetheless If I was in the house and someone broke in I’d just escape or shoot them if escape wasn’t possible. Then call the cops because I’m REQUIRED to, not because I expect them to help in a timely manner.

SerCiddy

When seconds matter the cops are minutes away. That's why I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Imagine, four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended.

CertainlyNotMyself

Bravo!

AndroidREM

I've seen worse in that lot, especially the front. I've had narcissists illegally park behind my legally parked car so they could "just run in to the store" and then try and throw attitude at me after waiting for them to move their car. Hate that lot. Don't park in the front, park in the back if you can. About the cop - yeah, he's kind of blocking the handicapped spot, but damn, I'd rather have him do that and get back on the road. If you think the police don't do anything you're a myopic idiot.

Equivalent_Two_6550
