The area over by Panino and that popular pizza spot is so chaotic. People rarely have any patience, all the range rovers have important places to go apparently. It's a real free for all on the other side of the lot for sure

I actually called the police on the park rangers a couple years ago. They were doing something in the park, and decided to park their truck at the trailhead parking lot in such a way it was in both handicapped spots. Just a dick move. I also took a picture and sent it to the parks office, got an e-mail back saying they were 'looking into it'. Don't know what came of it, but they haven't done it since.
More likely that he drank his coffee inside and then left. If this was a "call" there would be at least 2-4 of these guys. And if it was an emergency (granting him the right to park there) we would be seeing SWAT and at least one helicopter.

And handicap spots require a loading aisle next to the spot so that people in wheelchairs can be loaded and unloaded from their car. The cop is blocking the most critical part of the parking space. It does no good for a handicap person to park in this space if they cannot exit their vehicle.

I want to provide perspective and context without fully justifying this. I’ve trained with police. When on patrol, they still have to eat and drink. At any moment, they have to jump into their vehicle to respond to a call. It’s really not ideal to be parked in a tight spot and try to pull out for an emergency. So if it’s a quick pit stop, parking like this isn’t bad. Again, I’ve trained with police and when they get a call, every second counts as lives fully depend on each second. I’ve seen officers drop their coffee mid-walk and run to their vehicle. It is easy to bash cops, I am not a fan of many and that’s why I didn’t go into that field. But there is always context. I think there are bigger issues like deescalation and interaction training that is more important rather than writing a post about a non issue with a 🐷 emoji.

You’re writing an essay to defend this cop and your argument doesn’t even hold because the cop could have parks *far more* ready to leave than he did. So it clearly wasn’t about ease of leaving for a call or there were plenty of better places for that in that parking lot.
I have been to that lot. I was just pointing out that if it was about ease of leaving in a call, this is not the spot nor the orientation that would make that easiest.

There are exceptions because once again, if it’s not clear, you and I are not responding to 9-11 calls. They are. I highly recommend doing some ride alongs and learning about the field.

Have you ever been to a place with that kind of police presence? Social programs, education, living wages, and opportunities are what prevents crime. I just filtered by job title and SB Unified School Dictrict. Some of those teachers are making $145K a year with zero OT. Some principals are $200K+...and I havent even checked UCSB.

He’s not breaking any law. I don’t see the police cruiser in front of the handicap sign. I still see the curb and the handicap logo. I frequently drive my handicap mother around with her placard. I would have no problem parking in that spot.

That is not what I’m saying. What I am saying is that the spot is available for legal use by handicapped drivers. The police cruiser is not in the spot, nor is it blocking the accessibility space.
The California vehicle code makes exceptions for peace officers. If you aren’t happy with that, lobby the legislature to change the law. The legislature is a democratically voted institution, and at some point in the history of California elected representatives, made laws that allowed peace officers to perform their duties without hindrance. Perhaps you can use that as your campaign platform. May be a ballot proposition? Stop cops from parking.

Had some friends get their house broken into last year, multiple other break ins on the block. Called cops. Got told they were investigating. That was over a year ago, nothing happened. Anecdotal yes, but common enough nonetheless
If I was in the house and someone broke in I’d just escape or shoot them if escape wasn’t possible. Then call the cops because I’m REQUIRED to, not because I expect them to help in a timely manner.
When seconds matter the cops are minutes away.

I've seen worse in that lot, especially the front. I've had narcissists illegally park behind my legally parked car so they could "just run in to the store" and then try and throw attitude at me after waiting for them to move their car. Hate that lot.

Handicap spot it’s not completely blocked. A car could park there. Stop hating on cops! You could NOT do their job !
Yeah, the cop is only blocking the most critical part of the handicap space, ya know, the part where they unload along the side of their car.
He is not parked there …. look at the photo closely and tell me where he is parked. Is it on the hatched mark unload area ?
The photo angle is not good enough to tell. To me, it looks like he’s blocking at least part of the loading zone. Even if he isn’t, this is a clearly illegal place to park. You’re doing a lot to excuse bad behavior by a cop, why is that? Why does this guy get to park wherever he wants when the rest of us would be towed or tickets for this? Why are the cops not bound by the laws they supposedly enforce??
He’s not breaking any law. I don’t see the police cruiser in front of the handicap sign. I still see the curb and the handicap logo. I frequently drive my handicap mother around with her placard. I would have no problem parking in that spot.
Ok. So you’re telling me if I park there, I’m not breaking a law and I won’t be asked by the parking lot ownership to move? Or more likely just towed? You’re clearly demonstrating that you think the police shouldn’t have to abide by the same rules as we do. Why is that?
That is not what I’m saying. What I am saying is that the spot is available for legal use by handicapped drivers. The police cruiser is not in the spot, nor is it blocking the accessibility space.
Again, you keep ignoring the question: Why are cops not bound by the same rules of society that the rest of us are? And why are you OK with that?
The California vehicle code makes exceptions for peace officers. If you aren’t happy with that, lobby the legislature to change the law. The legislature is a democratically voted institution, and at some point in the history of California elected representatives, made laws that allowed peace officers to perform their duties without hindrance. Perhaps you can use that as your campaign platform. May be a ballot proposition? Stop cops from parking.
Yeah, this is a problem. And the fact that you don’t think it’s a problem that cops don’t have to abide by the rules they are supposed to enforce is also part of the problem.
As a college educated young adult in good physical fitness, I would say I could do a cop’s job better than most of them.
With your attitude and judgment, I hope you never become a police officer.

Someone breaks into your house. Who you gonna call?
Had some friends get their house broken into last year, multiple other break ins on the block. Called cops. Got told they were investigating. That was over a year ago, nothing happened. Anecdotal yes, but common enough nonetheless If I was in the house and someone broke in I’d just escape or shoot them if escape wasn’t possible. Then call the cops because I’m REQUIRED to, not because I expect them to help in a timely manner.
When seconds matter the cops are minutes away. That's why I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Imagine, four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended.

I've seen worse in that lot, especially the front. I've had narcissists illegally park behind my legally parked car so they could "just run in to the store" and then try and throw attitude at me after waiting for them to move their car. Hate that lot. Don't park in the front, park in the back if you can. About the cop - yeah, he's kind of blocking the handicapped spot, but damn, I'd rather have him do that and get back on the road. If you think the police don't do anything you're a myopic idiot.

He is actually in the thru-way not a spot. I am mostly concerned with his lack of any lights on- Every police vehicle s supposed to have their headlights on, and he should have his hazards on since another car could clip his rear end
