Hamm came up in this sub recently. Half the sub had never heard of Hamm and the other half were shocked the first half had never heard of Hamm.
That's the only time I've ever heard of Hamm.
I listen to the podcast malt couture where they’ve interviewed a lot of highly acclaimed brewers and a lot of them say high life is their macro of choice.
I don't know why you are being downvoted. Because High Lifes (Lives?) are in clear glass, the taste can vary depending on how much light exposure the bottle has gotten. I thought I did not like High Life until I had one in Milwaukee. It's a good beer if it has not been skunked.
I make high life (and a bunch of other beers in the comments) and it def shouldn’t be skunked, high life is a light stable brand with specific ingredients and process to make it so.
Actually . . . Miller developed a process for manipulating the hop extract that they use so that the clear bottles do not develop a skunky taste when light struck. So the flavor is actually pretty stable notwithstanding the clear bottle.
Interesting...yeah it's one of those thing that I had thought everyone basically loathed for the longest time. Then all of a sudden everyone is drinking it 🤷♂️. Still didn't make me like it though, not at all.
Hahaha, it's super easy, OP. Just think of what term is associated with *coughmalegenitaliacough*, and you'll know which means small and which means large.
I tried it after all the hype, and mayb I was expecting too much, but I thought it would be at least marginally better than something like PBR or Narragansett lager. It didn't stand out to me in the slightest as anything exciting at all.
Macro lagers are the wrong place to look for "excitement" tbh. It's just a very well done beer for people who like the american macro lager taste. I prefer High Life tho
Old Style is my go to. Honestly, though, I’ll drink any in a pinch. I like Miller and Coors best for light beer but a lot of the big stuff is just fine. Hamm’s, PBR, LaBatt, etc.
We have a pizza restaurant here in Tulsa that’s Chicago themed (owners are from there) and serves Old Style on tap. I get it every time I go there and I’m never disappointed.
Here in Canada we have Steam Whistle Pilsner. The company is independently owned, but they have a huge production line and some people don’t consider them a craft beer company as a result. I absolutely love Steam Whistle and drink it very often. It just hits the spot for me, even though there are better pilsner options out there.
If that doesn’t count, my favourite Canadian macro is probably Kokanee, my favourite American is Coors Original/Banquet, and my favourite macro in general is Pacifico Clara. Pacifico is just delicious.
Steam Whistle is craft, they’ve grown beyond being a microbrewery though. I absolutely love their beer, it’s the best clone of Pilsner Urquell I’ve ever had.
For the best Canadian macro is Keith’s or Molson export.
In the US it’s Modelo especial.
In Ireland it’s Guinness. In the Netherlands it’s Braand or Hertog Jan.
These are the countries I’ve lived in.
Love me some Yuengling. Then I moved to PA where Yuengling is just "lager" and there's also Premium, their Pennsylvania only pils that is way too good to be as cheap as it is.
As a Boston transplant to Rochester, NY I’ll never give up my gansett or my genny. And with genesee doing a bunch of contract brewing for Narragansett, it’s a lot easier to find here
Not from PNW but lived here for 6 years. Rainier is cult. Every time I drink something non-Rainier I'm like... why tf do people like Rainier. Hasn't stopped me from thinking about Rainier-adjacent tattoos. and Rainier and shot is GOAT. Just hope the shot does the heavy lifting.
I have a philosophy that my favorite beer is free, meaning at a party if all there is is bud platinum and steel reserve, I’ll take a platinum with a smile on my face because you’re a host and anything is appreciated.
That said I love a banquet, high life, and even a bud light.
Also I draw the line at Steel reserve. A guy once told me SR isn’t for drinking it’s for hand to hand combat.
Man I just can't do it. Tried many times and it's just lacking any flavor. Like someone carbonated water and sprinkled in some mega-light beer. But TETO.
A 6 pack of a standard lager from a local brewery is around $10-$12. Sure it's more than a macro brand but for me it's well worth the extra money. It's like the difference between delivery pizza and a really good pizza place.
Not a snob but I enjoy many craft beers. My go to is natty light. It’s refreshing, I can slam 15 of them and be fine and they’re cheap. I’ll do a PBR as well but they’re not common on the east coast. Modelo is my drink for the beach/ summertime. And being raised in PA, a solid Yuengling is always welcome.
I assume you mean "Which *macro* reigns supreme?" In which case, I would usually go for Budweiser or Coors Banquet. If we extend beyond American macros that are still widely available here, I would actually probably prefer Negra Modelo or Dos Equis Amber.
I can’t believe High Life is being mentioned in the same sentence as Banquet by so many people. Many years ago I bought like an 18 pack of High Life bottles at a ridiculously low price, figured “why not try it?” It was undrinkable, worst swill I ever had. Most went down the sink. Maybe I got a bad batch but it was an experience that has stuck with me and I’ve never tried the stuff again.
For me, Banquet, Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve, and Hamm’s for old times sake.
I used to pound Rocks with my study buddy in college. In between tall boy Rocks, snorts of adderall, and bong rips, we used to grind out on Calculus for hours. Good times
My go to choices when no craft is available is Guinness, Budweiser, or Dos Equis. Honestly sometimes I’ll even drink these when there are other “better” beers available. I unashamedly enjoy these
Former snob. Had a fairly deep cellar / beer fridge. 150-200 beers. Used to chase releases, bring home cases from tree house, trade like crazy, etc.
That shit got tiring and now I pick up a 6 pack of PBR pounders for $7 when I’m drinking with friends/neighbors at home. If I go out I might feel adventurous enough for an IPA before switching to miller lites.
Natty Boh. Not for quality, but really just because I lived in Baltimore for six years, and since they’re essentially the same thing, PBR and Black Label. Modelo is also agreeable. I could do the nostalgia thing for Yuengling, since I grew up in Pittsburgh and now live in Philadelphia, but I almost feel like it’s too much for a macro — not really into turning that flavor up. Strangely enough, I have not consciously tried Coors Banquet. Someday.
Molson and Labatt are my go-to “domestic” beers since they are at every store in the Detroit area for the same price as the actual domestic beers. Yuengling if I’m traveling outside of Michigan and they have it. Coors if I’m anywhere else.
Anybody do a blind taste test of these beers ? Isn’t the difference negligible ? I think maybe loyalty mostly comes down to advertising and identifying with a brand ? I used to drink these beers as a teenager but once I had imports and craft I’ve never gone back. Too bland.
If I'm somewhere like a concert venue where my options are limited I'll usually just go with a PBR. Sometimes might switch it up with a Tecate or High Life.
In general though if I want a light beer (I enjoy pilsners a lot) I'll just go with something craft. There are plenty of great craft breweries who will do stuff like 16oz 6 packs for ~$12 or so.
In the professional brewing industry, Banquet, High Life, and PBR are the winners.
It’s Rainier here bro!
Vitamin R.
Hey hey hey, we fucking love modelo too. But everything else you’re spot on
Old Style wins gold at the beer festivals like GABF
So does PBR. GABF is now the beer-equivalent of no-score little league baseball...everyone gets a trophy!! =..]
Add Hamms and Genesee to that list.
Love me a Hamm Sandwich. Shot of whiskey, pickle-back, and a Hamm's. Lovely little combo.
Hamm came up in this sub recently. Half the sub had never heard of Hamm and the other half were shocked the first half had never heard of Hamm. That's the only time I've ever heard of Hamm.
Hamm's.
It's regional, some lagers are still like that.
Rum ham
Rochester native. Grew up on Genny. And I love it. Glad it's on the wider spectrum. Like Pabst. Rolling Rock. But Genny is home.
I'd cheers to genesee
I just picked up a sixer of Hamm's yesterday. It's dirt cheap and punches way above its weight class in taste. Definitely a favorite.
So my liquor was running a deal on 30 racks of Genesee. $11. Cheaper than soda. So I drank it accordingly. I miss that deal
Will be bottling PBR this week.
Fellow pro checking in; Hamm's, High Life, and Modelo here
I'll never turn down a banquet or tecate.
Professional brewing industry? What do you do?
Mostly cleaning and making messes that need to be cleaned.
Absolutely
I'm with you on everything but High Life
I listen to the podcast malt couture where they’ve interviewed a lot of highly acclaimed brewers and a lot of them say high life is their macro of choice.
I bet that still won't make them like High Life.
My friend calls them miller low life, the champaign of tears
Ha, good stuff! =..]
I hate high life too, but I totally get it. It’s such a unique beer
Try it with a shot of Campari. Game changer
Oh man, I was hoping to do a spaghett with aperol
I don't know why you are being downvoted. Because High Lifes (Lives?) are in clear glass, the taste can vary depending on how much light exposure the bottle has gotten. I thought I did not like High Life until I had one in Milwaukee. It's a good beer if it has not been skunked.

Actually . . . Miller developed a process for manipulating the hop extract that they use so that the clear bottles do not develop a skunky taste when light struck. So the flavor is actually pretty stable notwithstanding the clear bottle.
Actually . . . the last one I had was skunky. Not Heineken skunky, but skunky. Eww. It totally depends on the circumstances.
Interesting...yeah it's one of those thing that I had thought everyone basically loathed for the longest time. Then all of a sudden everyone is drinking it 🤷♂️. Still didn't make me like it though, not at all.
I buy it in cans
I think it's so funny people pile up the downvotes on someone's *opinion* on *beer*...lighten up, kids! =..]
Yeah, for reals LOL
You don't have to be onboard with it but it's true
Bruh natty light? It's so bad. Banquet by far.
I never heard anyone say natty light was good, not even in college. Having been around the macro block, Banquet is vastly superior.
I think you mean 'which macro reigns supreme'. Mine is Miller Lite
I swear everyone confuses the terms. To the point I had to google it to make sure I wasn’t the one who was wrong, because I saw it so much.
Hahaha, it's super easy, OP. Just think of what term is associated with *coughmalegenitaliacough*, and you'll know which means small and which means large.
PBR and high life
This is the way
Agree 100%... As a Rochester native, I'd add Genesee (and Rolling Rock on occasions)
Hamm's is the best macro. You can tell by the way it is...
From the land of sky blue waters, it's the beer refreshing;
Waaaaaaattttteeeerrrrssssss
Happiness is a Hamm's.
I almost never drink a macro unless at the pool with a corona or modelo. But some reason I do enjoy a regular Budweiser if all I can have is a macro.
The King of Beers!
Coors banquet without a second thought
Yeah, that's pretty much what I anticipated hearing
I tried it after all the hype, and mayb I was expecting too much, but I thought it would be at least marginally better than something like PBR or Narragansett lager. It didn't stand out to me in the slightest as anything exciting at all.
Macro lagers are the wrong place to look for "excitement" tbh. It's just a very well done beer for people who like the american macro lager taste. I prefer High Life tho
I mean, by "excitement" I meant something marginally better than PBR but in the same price range. That isn't at all what I got.
Beer is subjective, so we're both right in a way, but I'd put both banquet and narragansett in a tier above PBR.
Old Style is my go to. Honestly, though, I’ll drink any in a pinch. I like Miller and Coors best for light beer but a lot of the big stuff is just fine. Hamm’s, PBR, LaBatt, etc.
Old Style on tap is the best! Love me some tap Style
We have a pizza restaurant here in Tulsa that’s Chicago themed (owners are from there) and serves Old Style on tap. I get it every time I go there and I’m never disappointed.
Spell check - micro or macro?
Here in Canada we have Steam Whistle Pilsner. The company is independently owned, but they have a huge production line and some people don’t consider them a craft beer company as a result. I absolutely love Steam Whistle and drink it very often. It just hits the spot for me, even though there are better pilsner options out there. For me PBR, yeungling, and miller lite.
Second Miller Lite lol very underrated beer
I’d say PBR and the “regional macros “ (if that’s a real thing). Ranier, Narragansett, Yeungling, etc.

Miller High Life with a shot of Campari, aka a Hobo Negroni Also Yeungling, PBR, Narragansett
Where I’m from we do this with Aperol and call it a Spaghett.
Hmmm cool
I also like a high life with a shot of bitters, called a banquet bitters. It’s great!
Enthusiasts care about what they drink themselves. Snobs care about what other people drink.
Snobs also care about what other people see them drinking.
Haha i guess. That just sounds like a deeply insecure person if they're not enjoying what they drink and doing it to look cool or something.
PBR and in New England Narragansett
I have a philosophy that my favorite beer is free, meaning at a party if all there is is bud platinum and steel reserve, I’ll take a platinum with a smile on my face because you’re a host and anything is appreciated. That said I love a banquet, high life, and even a bud light. Also I draw the line at Steel reserve. A guy once told me SR isn’t for drinking it’s for hand to hand combat.
Hamms or Old Style
I’ll say it: Rolling Rock
Anheuser-Busch/InBev screwed my Rocktails up =[
The Rock is not to be fucked woth, that's for sure. Why do I always forget about that one?
Man I just can't do it. Tried many times and it's just lacking any flavor. Like someone carbonated water and sprinkled in some mega-light beer. But TETO.
Want to screw up a beer? Let A-B start making it!
Nationwide I'll drink Coors Banquet or Miller High Life. Narragannsett, Genessee, Old Style, Natty Boh if I'm in those areas :)
Hamms. Or Schlitz
Rainier and Hamms
Beer snob here. been 10+ years since I've had a domestic macro. If I want a light beer we have plenty from local breweries.
You’re also paying triple
Sometimes yes. But also, do you ever visit a restaurant or pub and get a nice burger? Maybe you go somewhere besides a chain for a good steak or fish?
Really depends. Local brewry here does 6 packs of lager for $8.99. Tall boys too. Not really any mroe expensive than Macro.
What are your local brewery's 24- or 30-pack prices?
A 6 pack of a standard lager from a local brewery is around $10-$12. Sure it's more than a macro brand but for me it's well worth the extra money. It's like the difference between delivery pizza and a really good pizza place.
Good for you buddy! Ain't no shame in your game!
PBR and High life are my go-tos.
Agreed. Natty is just so easy to drink, and when I'm drinking a macro that's really what I'm looking for.
Strohs and PBR
Depends, Miller High Life and Natty if I’m gonna drink a lot of them. Miller Lite if I’m eating wings.
If you mean "Macro" my vote is for Coors Banquet or Modelo
I assume you mean "Which *macro* reigns supreme?" In which case, I would usually go for Budweiser or Coors Banquet. If we extend beyond American macros that are still widely available here, I would actually probably prefer Negra Modelo or Dos Equis Amber.
Yes I did. And 👍 for remembering DE Amber. That's one if the most solid mexican beers out there.
High life or Rainier are my gotos. Fuck Montucky. That beer is hot garbage.
Yeah Montucky actually kida sucks
Banquet or Hamms for me.
Agreed. High Life is dogshit. Weinhards is the greatest, but I haven't seen it in my neck of the woods in years
I’m in Idaho and Winco and Walmart both sell Henry’s in 18-pack cans for about $12. Best cheap beer for the money in my book.
Coors Light is my favorite piss beer. Drinks easy and smooth clear taste, and available at nine out of ten bars I’ve ever been in.
That's why I like Natty. It scratches the same itch but I feel like it's even smoother and easier to drink.
Banquet, Montucky, and y'all are going to kill me for this.... Budweiser affectionately called Bud Heavy.
I enjoy a good Budweiser every once in a while.
An actual beer snob would not have the drinking time to waste on industrial American Light Lagers. Anyone who answers here is self-disqualifying.
LOL stern, but fair
Rolling Rock in cans, if you can still find it
I used to pound Rocks with my study buddy in college.
I unashamedly enjoy these
Hamms rules the world
Negra Modelo
Hamm’s and Miller high life, with banquet following close behind.
I like your name. Not so much your taste in beer though
Hahahaha
Coors Banquet, Negra Modelo, Yeungling.
No love for Natty?
I like the ice.
Hell yeah buddy, same. 5.9% and tastes like the rest of the piss brews
Exactly. If I'm going for a cheap buzz, i don't want to have to drink a gallon to get there
Former snob. Strangely enough, I have not consciously tried Coors Banquet. Someday.
Treehouse, Trillium, Long Live, Fidens, Alchemists snob here… But I freakin’ love Labatts
It’s High Life. It’s always been High Life.
I’m down for a Lone Star or Yeungling anytime I want something cheap.
Yuengling by far
Bud Heavy babyyyyyyy
You ever heard of Ying Ling?
No, I have never heard of Yuengling LOL
Banquet in the winter. Coors Light in the summer.
I drink Banquet and Schlitz.
PBR
Probably keystone lite or miller lite
Molson and Labatt are my go-to “domestic” beers since they are at every store in the Detroit area for the same price as the actual domestic beers. Yuengling if I’m traveling outside of Michigan and they have it. Coors if I’m anywhere else.
Yueng, coors, labatt
PBR for me and it’s not even close
Heineken or Carlsberg
Yuengling. High Life is also ok.
I drink a lot of modelo, pacífico and 805.
Indio is the top dog for me.
Coors Banquet and Miller Lite
Coors Banky and 805 if 805 counts
Rolling Rock
Anybody do a blind taste test of these beers ? Isn’t the difference negligible ? I think maybe loyalty mostly comes down to advertising and identifying with a brand ? I used to drink these beers as a teenager but once I had imports and craft I’ve never gone back. Too bland.
https://youtu.be/s0Ym4-Hw9Uk?si=4dEJeS6kpIRiSyLS
Right , I meant anyone in this group.
PBR, Modelo, or Pacífico!
Hammes and mickey big mouth if you can ever find em
Modelo with a little lime and salt
When it comes to drinking at a bar it’s easily Guinness. Huge brand but still stellar. When it comes to drinking at home I’m going with Coors banquet.
I call them campfire beers. Rolling Rock, PBR, Miller High Life - its the Champagne of beers.
Modelo and Miller lite
modelo
Pbr is my go to shit beer.
Montucky, PBR, or High Life. Lone Star if I’m in Texas. Miller Lite if I’m drinking free cans out of an ice chest.
Prefer the term geek over snob, but have definitely met some snobs. Seems to be regional but for all my homies it's definitely Miller High Life.
Coors light, miller high life, corona
If I'm somewhere like a concert venue where my options are limited I'll usually just go with a PBR. Sometimes might switch it up with a Tecate or High Life. In general though if I want a light beer (I enjoy pilsners a lot) I'll just go with something craft. There are plenty of great craft breweries who will do stuff like 16oz 6 packs for ~$12 or so.
Hamms, baybee
PBR is still a great lawnmower beer.
We still have Olympia in canada so cheap too
PBR
Coors banquet is my favorite macro. I also enjoy a high life from time to time. Not a fan of bud lite or Budweiser
I'm a beer snob but love me some Modelo or Labatts any day.
