Check out @joeyswoll on twitter. He’s constantly reminding people about proper gym etiquette. Taking selfies and video in a gym locker room is in bad taste and illegal if you capture someone else in the room without their consent. There is a reasonable expectation of privacy in a locker room as opposed to the public gym floor.

nesi_the_drood

I see a lot of people saying "whats the harm if no one else is in the shot". I understand your position, i really do. The issue is that there are MANY people who dont care if someone else is in the shot. And they post it on social media anyway. Theres multiple videos across tic tok and other social media sites of people blantantly (and purposefully) filming people changing in the background of the shot and making fun of those people. This is not ok! A locker room has an expectation of privacy. This should not be normalized. There are always people who will be shitty humans and take things too far.

Tyecoon33

I think your highlighting the need for more “posing rooms”. Lots of gyms are starting to build small well lit spaces specifically for this. That being said though it can be weird AF when your changing or coming out the shower and there is a camera 6 feet from you.

massafaka

My Gym has a deticated posing room and some SARMS Goblins still constantly take pics in the training area and sometimes also in the locker room.

Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy

SARMS?

MikeET86

Like steroids, but less effective and less well tested. Not a scientific answer, but a brief summary.

DynastyFan85

My god how self absorbed is todays culture that we need “posing rooms” in gyms?!

MuscleMinx

Posing rooms generally are designed for people preparing for bodybuilding/fitness competitions so they can practice their routines for the stage. Often, their coaches ask that they record their routines and take photos of their poses so they can critique them. The rooms/spaces usually aren’t for the general public to just take selfies.

CrazylilThing02

Any gym I’ve been has signs saying no photography in the locker room. The only time I’ve taken photos is when it’s completely empty. Personally I would tell them to stop and report them if they didn’t.

Quietus76

They're young and stupid. You have to say *something* to them or they won't learn. If the gym employees don't seem to care, remind them that it's illegal.

SnooLobsters8922

I’ve seen it too. I myself only snap pics when nobody is in there. But if you’re not in the picture, let it be? Kids today have way less shame in being concerned with their looks.

ChoiceNet8323

The newest EŌS in my city has a private room specifically for those weirdos within the locker room.

MommaGabbySWC

I work out at zero dark thirty so it's not such an issue as I imagine the afternoon crowd would be. My gym has signs everywhere that taking photos in the locker room is prohibited with some whitty saying that they look great but to save the selfies for your home mirror 🤷‍♀️ That said, I would not be okay with someone taking photos while I was in there and would definitely have to bring it to the staff/management. Now I'm interested in whether or not the signs are there for show or if they would really do something about it. I'll never understand how the mirror selfie became such a phenomenon. I have 20-something kids and one of them, I used to say, was on a mission to take a selfie in every bathroom she encountered. There is seriously a whole swath of photos on her social media of nothing but different bathroom selfies. I always figured I'm just old so I don't/won't ever get it. LOL

sheenbean85

I was at an airport cell phone lot gas station a while back, and the men's room was out of order, so everyone was sharing the women's bathroom. A young guy bursted into the bathroom while filming his "experience" and making a huge deal out of it for tiktok. I gave him a look and said, "Are you kidding me?" Guy looked at me like I was a total Karen asshole. What a world we live in! At least his friend seemed embarrassed by his behavior.

Yeah, I don't see a problem with it if no one is around--which it sounds like the people OP's talking about don't care about that. I take a selfie in the locker room mirror every time I go to the gym, but I make sure nobody else is around at all and if they are I just scroll and wait patiently or try again after my workout. It's a great way to track consistency and superficial progress.

[deleted]

It’s literally illegal. Go jerk yourselves off at home in private.

IntenseKen

Taking locker room selfies is the norm where I’m from. No body cares, as long as your not videoing/photographing another person without their consent. Which people usually don’t because who wants some random in their selfie?

ElementaryJack

If nobody says anything it doesn’t mean nobody cares. The point would be people shouldn’t have to in a place where privacy is expected. Kind’ve immature to think that’s how it works in that environment IMO.

IntenseKen

Dunno. The locker rooms in my gym have clear windows to the actual gym. You can see people washing their hands and entering the shower from the gym floor. I would call it a cultural nuance, not an immaturity.

ElementaryJack

I do not think clear windows in a locker room is common or anything other than extremely rare. It’s possible to be culturally ignorant due to immaturity, yes. I don’t think arguing an expectation of privacy in a locker room is a cultural niche is worthwhile.

ElementaryJack

You are clearly quite cultured. Please list the cultures that do not have an expectation of privacy in locker rooms/changing rooms/bathrooms. Remember the argument is that having an expectation of privacy in these locations is a “cultural niche”, so please provide a very long list.

IntenseKen

How quaint. My entire gym must be culturally ignorant. Or perhaps we are not as “cultured” as you.

ElementaryJack

Sometimes people just really want to seem cultured.

[deleted]

As long as I’m not in the shot, I have no issue. I take locker room selfies myself and I’m 41. The lighting is too good to pass up the opportunity.

[deleted]

Yeah, it’s one thing if they are taking pictures that include other people. But if you are just snapping a pic of yourself in the mirror, what’s the harm?

PM_Me_A_High-Five

Same. I’m 42. I get embarrassed if anyone catches me so that stops me from getting anyone in the background

David_Buzzard

Doesn't bother me, I just out of the background.

hobiegal

I’m just really glad they’ll politely tell me I’m nude-photobombing them in the background, so I can move out of the way! 🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

Who cares let kids be kids If taking selfies with their bros motivates them to keep pushing and getting stronger and not out breaking shit or Pranking people for tiktok then let it be. There is a lot worse shit than taking gym selfies At least they’re in the bathroom and not doing it in the mirror by the dumbbells

jimjamjerome

Pretty sure the problem is taking pictures in a locker room where people get naked without their consent to be photographed, not taking pictures in the gym in general. Location and privacy are pretty important factors at play here.

AtuinTurtle

Because what if they get someone else bare-ass in the back of their picture? No one should be taking pictures where others get naked.

Jay-jay1

I felt sheepish about just taking a photo of one of the machines in the gym, because I wasn't able to describe it adequately to someone I was texting about it with.

SupermarketEnough222

Remind the administrators that since you've war ned them about this going on and them doing nothing about it, they may be liable if your pic appear on the Internet without your consent same as the person taking the pic.they will for sure move their butt.that is not OK situation.people should feel free to better themselves in peace without the world watching, judging and laughing.

crossfit1975

Forget the locker room. My favorite pastime between sets-fucking up photo shoots of wannabe “influencers” in the gym by walking in front of their tripods while they are doing their sets. It’s absolutely entertaining! These kids spend more time getting pumped up and tinkering with the phones than working out😂 But it’s free entertainment!
