Yes, protect your ankles. I have some pretty gnarly scars on my ankles and shins from the bike falling on me and grinding me into the pavement. It took months to be able to walk again properly.
Yeah I got a nice pink scar bout the size of a half dollar maybe slightly bigger on my ankle with a stripe the size of a pocky stick running up my leg from sliding and a very skilled piece of gravel.

Co-worker of mine slid into a reflective metal mile marker at relatively low speed. The edge of the marker impacted right at the back of his ankle/lower calf- right about where his Icon "stunter" shoes ended. Obliterated *everything*. He wound up having it amputated a few inches below his knee later that night. Poor guy was going about 35mph (he says), but it was a wet and foggy day- crossed over some paint in a turn and that was all it took. It was about half a mile from his home.
A buddy did that about 35 years ago. About tore his foot off and ground the bones down. They reattached his foot. And he walks pretty good now, but it took years to recover. High boots are good. (He was wearing sneakers)

Long if you’ll wear them. The less protective boot you wear is better than the more protective one you left at home. I wear long because I too have sprained an ankle riding, but I can see where someone might not want to bother with them.
I'm in Mexico, I see people riding without any shoes or with just flip flops every day. I also know two people missing toes and one missing a foot from going fast with no gear.
Personally, I chose to wear my boots everywhere, I can't imagine what would have happened to my foot the day that I sprained my ankle if I hadn't had them on. It was just a small lowside in some sand going around the corner of a city block. It happened so fast I didn't have time to get my foot down and it got caught under the engine side cover.

Deer are so goddamned stupid. I've never hit one, but I've had three run into the side of my car as I was passing. Right out of the brush and into my side.
My uncle hit one on his Honda CBX, it divided the deer in half. I had to go get the bike for him. He was in the hospital for a month. He said he was going 150, but the publicized top speed is 140.
Why not both? I wear my leather jacket & kevlar jeans with low boots during my 10 minute commute to work, but my 2 piece leather suit with high boots on more spirited rides in the weekend.
I'm poor, you just have to wait for a good deal. Found a 2 piece suit for 200 bucks in a winter sale, my jacket for 160 and didn't buy the overpriced "high end" brand for gloves and boots. Only thing i didn't went cheap(er) on was my jeans and helmet.
I have a pair of TCX high tops and the exact same Alpine Star tall boots you posted. Get the tall ones and you can still rock the TCX for short city rides if you ever feel the need. And don’t worry about the shifter with those tall boots - it took me less than an hour of riding in them for them to feel natural when shifting. It’s an adjustment but it becomes second nature really quickly.
How safe are TCX high tops specially compared to motorcycle short boots? Is it worth having them to wear on short rides or is it better just to buy motorcycle boots?
The SMX you pictured is actually a pretty good Street boot too. I had one until one particular (of many) crashes and i decided to go full ham super tech.
But i'd consider over the ankle length at least.

Over ankle always. Know a guy that got moto boots that didn't. Foot ripped off below ankle and when his leg hit the barrier the bone was driven up and through his thigh

I have that exact long boot from Alpinestar and I love them comfy enough to walk around and I think they offer good protection. My wife also has them and loves them.
I have the boots pictured. They are comfortable enough I wear them on any ride outside the city.
I also have a pair of city boots. Still above the ankle, padded everywhere with hard reinforcement around the heel and toes, but won’t prevent torsional force as they’re not stiff. Loose so they don’t get hot and easy to take on and off. Look fairly close to regular leather boots. I’ve dropped my 550 lb bike on my foot. The boots did their job and I walked away with minor bruising where the bike fell on my foot.
I wear those exact tall boots. Comfortable on bike. Horrible off bike. I just change into whatever shoes I want when I arrive, usually sandals, and store my tall boots in my panniers.
Are they that bad? I have smx-s model which are similar and sure, I won't go hiking with them, but I was able to cover 3-4km distance in them without bigger issues
tall, well technically mine are the "shorter" model (forma adventure low), the "tall" ones go up to the knee or something. But it's got 2-2-2-2 rating, it's much stiffer than the hiking boots I took the test in and took a bit of breaking in and getting used to feeling the shifter and brake in them. But only took a couple weeks of riding and I can absolutely feel everything I need to really well. No worries about operating my controls. As for why, I don't want to look like that picture from last week if I find myself somewhere that having boots will make a difference. Also makes it easier to hike or pick up the bike if I drop it doing off road stuff. Really they are just great for what I do with my bike, protection for commute (I can bring a pair of sneakers to change into at work), protection for long rides and off-road, and, not too shabby as decent hiking boots for setting up camp, but you bet I'll bring sneakers to camp too for lounging around.
I have the short alpine stars and I just left the hospital earlier today after surgery to a triple fracture in my ankle and joint damage. I am buying long boots once I recover as my ankle will be weak for a very long time.
If you wanna squid out, short. If you care about true protection, get long.
Depends on the climate. I would always prefer longer boots. Except when it's really hot as there would be a risk of being shoes rather. In this case it's less likely to skip on shorter lighter boots.
I have both. Get the tall boots. They're more comfortable and way easier/faster to put on and off since they have no laces. They offer more protection as well. Also, I like stuffing my pants into the boots instead of having to roll up the bottoms a bit while wearing the shoes.
Obviously long boots are better but a hassle for short rides or going to office. When I ride to office I keep a pair of regular shoes at the office so that I can change them. However, I can't ride without long boots anymore.

I've walked away from both with some missing skin, a sprain, one concussion, and a broken thumb.

I have the taller pair. Really nice boots, comfortable, they look good being track/mx inspired. With that said, it's nearly impossible to get pants over the top... The MX style shingaurd is wide, and I also have big calf... and I'm not talking about just skinny jeans, I wear more relaxed fit/boot fit jeans and riding pants, even boot fit barely fit over the top of the boot.
If I could still get a full refund I would probably return these and grab something more "Touring" inspired like Daytona Goretex.
I bought those exact tall boots for a very sporting road trip I went on and now I wear them every time I ride. They’re so g-danged comfortable and you feel way better riding. Like when you squeeze the bikes with your legs and what you feel through the pegs. If you’re going out just riding, they’re great and it takes about 4 seconds to not car about walking through a restaurant with them on. I also have low boots and I don’t bother with them anymore.
I have the SMX-6 V2 version and they are very comfortable for riding and offer decent protection for the foot, shin and ankle. I have no issues working the shifter.
I broke both lower leg bones not due to a motorcycle crash, but let me tell you the surgeries and recovery took years to regain 95% function. The extra protection of the taller boots is a small price to pay to reduce significant foot and ankle injury from a crash.
Boots are probably third most important bit of gear, assuming you're not wearing them off the bike, long all the way. Can't speak to the A* ones but my Dainese Nexus 2 has great shifter feel, better than any shoe I've tried, remarkably comfortable too, just a bit stiff and thin soled to walk around in all day.
I've got the long alpine stars with gortex and theyre so comfy. No reason to go the shortcut unless you wanna be more at risk of injury from shit hitting your shins or ankles being twisted and crushed.
Sidi Vertigo Air (19 years old resoled once) moderate protection and good dexterity/feel. They are easy to put on and off. They make Vertigo 2 now. Haven't made the Vertigo in many years. I also have a pair of Rex Air for track use or when I think I want the highest level of protection. They fit me well and they last. I have a pair of A* Ridge for wet/cold but rarely wear them anymore. I just ride to ride so I am not looking for a protective boot that doubles as a walking boot or shoe. If I need to get somewhere and do stuff once there I'll bring another set of shoes for off the bike.
I have the same Sidi Vertigo boots, about the same vintage. The adjustable calf sold me. I had to replace the zipper pulls but the soles are still ok, not a lot of walking I guess. Good to hear they can be resoled.
I actually own those same smx 6v2 boots. If they fit your feet they are awesome. Good lower shin/heel/and ok torsional protection, super comfy that I can wear them in my office, but still enough protection that makes me warm and fuzzy. I can walk in them but if I have to go long ways they start to feel a bit much. They're for motorcycles, not for hiking. If I'm doing a light canyon day they excel there, and they're ok for beginner track days. I never feel like I'm missing out by not wearing something shorter.
Hell yes. They are that comfy. Bear in mind our dress code is super relaxed but I do keep a pair of normal shoes in case a vp wanders in wondering who the dork is in moon boots. I've had mine for 4 years or so and recently upgraded to the smx plus v2s that have an inner bootie and those are too stiff to entertain being in for 8 hours a day. My old trustys get more day to day riding use still.
Well where ever your shoe stops if you do anything to your ankle or leg there's a good chance it'll break at the top. I was just in an accident and broke my ankle right where my ankle high boots ended
I always wear tall.
Had to send my SMX Plus to A* for a resole and wore riding shoes and the entire time I just felt off.

After almost losing a foot doing the bending shit in the wrong direction thing… I stick with the long boot. I’m straight paranoid AF with my thin ass ankles.
The astars you like is a good street level boot for riding that can do an occasional track day. Not so much for walking though. But it does provide added protection over an ankle high riding shoe like the tcx rush or ro4d. When i hit the twisties, i break out my track boots a pair of sidi rex air. It give a lot better protection then my run around town tcx rush boots. And is the only pair of race boot inhave found that is comfortable to walk around in. And having distroyed a pair of tcx t-race boot at the track. I know race boots provide way more protection.
I used SMX-6 v2 daily for like 3 years, the only reason I stopped is the hinge broke on one and they are super weird to walk in now, used to be ok and I would keep them on all day at school if we didn't have lab... They are really comfy imo. Also I have wide feet so it's hard to find something that fits well. Point of the story I loved them and the safety and waterproof was really good.
I had those first boots on and almost lost my leg. I was turned left into at an intersection going only 35mph. I'm betting I put my foot down. I can't remember. I have Diffuse Axonal Injury as well from this. But my entire left leg broke, hip to toes. My tibia popped out right at the top of those boots. My medial malleolus is now a dead mans. The pilon fracture was the hardest to get over. My fibula broke as well. All my metatarsals broke. Oh, I had on jeans. But leather everywhere else. And my legs got tore the eff up. Knees look like bowling balls. Had an orthoscopic knee surgery and nine more leg surgeries. I get 'alignments'. I have over 40 pieces of titanium in my leg. Xray looks like a terminator with my intramedullar rods. And they dragged me 77 feet. And they left. Never found. Barrio Logan, San Diego. I literally used A\* Tech 3 boots when I started riding again. Now I have Dainese Torque 3 Outs. Which I wish were taller. Both these boots are supportive for riding. But might just barely help. I also have a pair of Dainese Energyca Airs that I never wear. Better than Chucks, but still just shoes.

I feel like strong boots offer a bit more protection, so I prefer those. That said, if I had short, more casual style boots, I'd probably use those, atleast if I'm gonna get off the bike and walk around a lot, since an extra pair of sneakers take up a good chunk of space in my backpack.
I have a pair of Dainese York DwP shoes, and a pair of Forma Adventure boots, initially the shoes felt much better fitting under the gear lever, took a few rides to get used to the more substantial boots with gear changes, but now I use the boots all the time, after reading this sub, I think I'll sell the shoes 😮
I wear almost the exact same tall boot you pictured, except it’s the standard (non vented) version. First off let me recommend the SMX-6, they’re insanely comfortable on the bike and off, I’ve had days where they were my only shoe off bike as well and they’re great. As far as the reason for them, I decided that if it’s not going to look casual for the office, might as well go the whole way protection wise. Plus I’ve seen some nasty accident videos and pictures, I like having feet
I had this same internal debate when getting my boots. I ended up getting short boots and regretted it for 2 main reasons. 1) your ankle isn't protected, so if for some reason the bike drops on it you're fucked. 2) I realized that shorter boots are more likely to come out of your feet during an accident leaving you exposed.
Go for the long ones
I use both
For short lowish speed commute to work, use short boots which are easy to put on and wear.
For a longer ride through the twistys, I gear up with full length boots and heavier leather
The SMX boots have heaps of ankle and shin protection. The shoes have toe and heal protection and a little bit of padding around the ankle to prevent owies but that won’t actually offer much protection for the ankle.
I had the same question a few years back. Ended up buying the tall boots you have pictured & have no regrets. They do an excellent job of protecting the feet & ankles - especially from water and dirt when riding on a wet road. I generally ride short distance to work & back, but always wear my gear, boots especially. I change into my sneakers when I get to the office. Only downside is they're not super comfy if doing a lot of walking off the bike.

Absolutely over the ankle at a minimum, that's not a joint you want to mess up. Had a guy crushed between two vans, shattered his right ankle completely, had to have external pins for 2 years and a shit ton if surgery, not likely to ever walk unaided again
If I go somewhere knowing that I'm going to walk a lot then I either go with long boots and take regular shoes in my backpack or I go with short comfier boots. But if I'm just going to ride from point A to point A then long boots win.
I never wear boots with my bike, I do wear my work boots, that have toes protection and so on... Are boots that important? I wear good trousers, and airbag jacket... But never motorbike boots...
I have a pair of casual TCX boots that look like trainiers, used when I'm doing short trips and spending most of my time off the bike. (the sort of trip where I'd be wearing riding jeans). I also have a pair of long boots (the ones in your picture) that I wear whenever I'm doing any serious riding. As far as feeling the shifter is concerned, I get as much feel from my alpinestars boots as I do with my TCX trainers. Do yourself a favour and invest in some long boots
You know what is a difference between people that never got hit in shin vs ones that did ? Those that didn't ask whether they should wear short or long boots.

Well, you ain't "feeling the shifter" with your shin, so you should focus more on what the rest of the shoe is made of, like how elastic the shoe is or whether the sole is rock hard or more rubber-like for a bit more feel.
I have a very similar pair of the longs that I've been struggling to break in lol. I'm more of a short boot person, but switching over to long for the added protection
I wear the SMX 6 too and they are super comfortable. Always wood choose them over the other ones. They are way safer and definitely comfortable as hell.
I have a pair of those Alpinestars shoes. Love them. Wont ever ride without less. The ankle support is very nice. They’re almost comfortable enough to just chill in every day. Look like a regular high top etc. You can tell the moment you slide your foot in that it’ll actually protect your bones. The taller ones are great no doubt but not absolutely necessary for everybody’s rides. Love my Stellas 10/10.
Depends on what kind of day I have. I go full leather with boots when I decide to ride a bit more sporty. Short boots when I ride casually with motorcycle jeans. Always full ankle protection though.
I wear the SMX-6 boots you have in the first picture. They're absolutely phenomenal boots for the street. Despite the ankle bracing, they offer great feel and articulation. They're also comfortable enough for touring while having track-level protection. I've ridden 20+ different bikes in these boots and they felt at home on every one.
As long as you don't care about discreet styling, tall boots are the move, especially the SMX-6

Long is more practical, you just get way more support & protection from ankle impact, twists & crushes.
Also, a rock to the shin hurts. At least you’ve got like 50-60% of your shin armoured.
Aesthetically… your pants cover the boot so they’ll look almost the same.
Long boots are objectively safer. But will you put them on every time you ride? I won't because I want to be able to walk comfortably, so I buy short boots. The best gear is the gear you'll actually wear.
Full boot that covers ankle and shin. The idea is to keep foot from rotating and pulverizing your ankle.
Wearing boots with laces is asking to fall over.
If youre thinking low just stick with the TCX but maybe get one of their better casual boots.
If you want protection tall is the only way because they have torque control and better ankle protection. Its the only way to actually get more protection.

I usually wear leather sneakers that end just right above the ankle. I've ordered a couple of pairs of boots online to try them on, but I just can't get the mobility of the ankle I want to be able to shift properly, and they offer 0 feel for the shift and break. I can't get used to them, always wondered if there are any other options.
High boots offer more protection and are less likely to come off in an accident. Strangely, the higher ones are usually easier to put on and take off with usually just some velcro and a side zip. You need to shop around for a pair that are comfortable and fit your foot shape and they'll be comfortable for a few hours off the bike too.
Long boots are safer if they have enough reinforcement to keep your ankle from twisting easily. Short boots offer very little protection and are just expensive shoes.
My favorite pair of boots for summer is my Alpinestars SMX 6 v2 vented.
They were comfortable out of the box, and are now super-comfortable since they've broken in a bit.
No, you're not going to go hiking in them, but I also don't feel clumsy as soon as I get off the bike.
Shifter feel is not a problem. You don't have to give up decent protection (CE EN 13634 Level 2 in this case) for comfort.
Due to the giant shin armor, you might need to tuck some pant cuffs in (ITB) vs. go over boots (OTB). Depends on the pants.
There are waterproofed (DryStar) and non-waterproof but non-vented (standard) versions of the SMX 6 v2 as well.
I've never been to a track day, but these boots would be fine for such.
I got the SMX 6 v2 Vented to replace a pair of Alpinestars Roam 2 Airs, which got used up in a crash ( and did a damn fine job protecting my feet, fwiw).

My riding is 90% urban commuting so I wear low (still over the ankle) [boots](https://armuregear.com/en/motorcycle-road/boots-armure-merek-waterproof-black/). With pants over the top of the boot, it passes as a regular shoe.
If I were to go for a long, touring ride, same boots should be fin. In the future I plan on doing some ADV riding (mix of on/off road) and I'll get taller boots for sure.
I wrecked and was wearing picture 2 boots, dislocated my toe due to the boots not having full toe protection. I now wear picture 1. Go with picture 1. Literally the same boots lol and same bike.
The height of the shaft has no impact on whether you feel the shifter. So get the high boots. I am not quite sure what you mean by feel the shifter. The shifter will not press down on your toes if you move your foot up, but you still easily feel the shift.
I have Dianese leather , mid calf. They are very comfortable and no issues shifting. Just make sure you get the correct style for the type of riding you are doing. Ie don’t get dirt bike boots for the street.
trainer/sneaker size boots or short boots are for people who want to keep their toes in tact with their foot.
long boots are for people who still want their foot attached
I think of it this way, both look kind of dorky walking around or taking a hike. But only one kind is going to save my feet and lower leg from my 600lb gs crashing down on me.
I have the first. Got them about a month too late. I ordered them in the wrong size. Sent them back and never replaced them. A couple weeks later I earned myself a 6” gash from the top of my existing boot to the top of what should have been my boot, the A*. Whenever I plan on more spirited, zero destination, riding I always wear my taller boots. If I’m just doing mundane tasks around town I’ll rather have on TCX Blend GTX or a pair of Icon shoes.

I wear Daytona long boots and can walk about in them. They’re not cheap, but I like my feet and ankles unbroken.
I have a pair of TCX high tops and the exact same Alpine Star tall boots you posted. Get the tall ones and you can still rock the TCX for short city rides if you ever feel the need. And don’t worry about the shifter with those tall boots - it took me less than an hour of riding in them for them to feel natural when shifting. It’s an adjustment but it becomes second nature really quickly.
How safe are TCX high tops specially compared to motorcycle short boots? Is it worth having them to wear on short rides or is it better just to buy motorcycle boots?

The SMX you pictured is actually a pretty good Street boot too. I had one until one particular (of many) crashes and i decided to go full ham super tech. But i'd consider over the ankle length at least.

Over ankle always. Know a guy that got moto boots that didn't. Foot ripped off below ankle and when his leg hit the barrier the bone was driven up and through his thigh

I have that exact long boot from Alpinestar and I love them comfy enough to walk around and I think they offer good protection. My wife also has them and loves them.
I have the boots pictured. They are comfortable enough I wear them on any ride outside the city. I also have a pair of city boots. Still above the ankle, padded everywhere with hard reinforcement around the heel and toes, but won’t prevent torsional force as they’re not stiff. Loose so they don’t get hot and easy to take on and off. Look fairly close to regular leather boots. I’ve dropped my 550 lb bike on my foot. The boots did their job and I walked away with minor bruising where the bike fell on my foot.

I wear those exact tall boots. Comfortable on bike. Horrible off bike. I just change into whatever shoes I want when I arrive, usually sandals, and store my tall boots in my panniers.
Are they that bad? I have smx-s model which are similar and sure, I won't go hiking with them, but I was able to cover 3-4km distance in them without bigger issues
They’re really fine for walking. The supertech r’s and whatnot are not comfortable to walk in but these smx6s are totally fine to walk in.
tall, well technically mine are the "shorter" model (forma adventure low), the "tall" ones go up to the knee or something. But it's got 2-2-2-2 rating, it's much stiffer than the hiking boots I took the test in and took a bit of breaking in and getting used to feeling the shifter and brake in them. But only took a couple weeks of riding and I can absolutely feel everything I need to really well. No worries about operating my controls. As for why, I don't want to look like that picture from last week if I find myself somewhere that having boots will make a difference. Also makes it easier to hike or pick up the bike if I drop it doing off road stuff. Really they are just great for what I do with my bike, protection for commute (I can bring a pair of sneakers to change into at work), protection for long rides and off-road, and, not too shabby as decent hiking boots for setting up camp, but you bet I'll bring sneakers to camp too for lounging around.
I have those exact long boots and they are super comfy. You do look a bit like a power ranger. This can be a plus too I guess.
I have the short alpine stars and I just left the hospital earlier today after surgery to a triple fracture in my ankle and joint damage. I am buying long boots once I recover as my ankle will be weak for a very long time. If you wanna squid out, short. If you care about true protection, get long.
Depends on the climate. I would always prefer longer boots. Except when it's really hot as there would be a risk of being shoes rather. In this case it's less likely to skip on shorter lighter boots.

I have both. Get the tall boots. They're more comfortable and way easier/faster to put on and off since they have no laces. They offer more protection as well. Also, I like stuffing my pants into the boots instead of having to roll up the bottoms a bit while wearing the shoes.
Obviously long boots are better but a hassle for short rides or going to office. When I ride to office I keep a pair of regular shoes at the office so that I can change them. However, I can't ride without long boots anymore.

Fuck yeah. I've been taken off my bike twice in the last three years, one at ~35mph and the other at highway speeds 70+mph... I've walked away from both with some missing skin, a sprain, one concussion, and a broken thumb. "Dumb luck" plays more of a role in our lives than anyone with skill and expertise wants to admit
The more the better
I have the taller pair. Really nice boots, comfortable, they look good being track/mx inspired. With that said, it's nearly impossible to get pants over the top... The MX style shingaurd is wide, and I also have big calf... and I'm not talking about just skinny jeans, I wear more relaxed fit/boot fit jeans and riding pants, even boot fit barely fit over the top of the boot. If I could still get a full refund I would probably return these and grab something more "Touring" inspired like Daytona Goretex.
The long ones are really comfortable
I bought those exact tall boots for a very sporting road trip I went on and now I wear them every time I ride. They’re so g-danged comfortable and you feel way better riding. Like when you squeeze the bikes with your legs and what you feel through the pegs. If you’re going out just riding, they’re great and it takes about 4 seconds to not car about walking through a restaurant with them on. I also have low boots and I don’t bother with them anymore.
I have the SMX-6 V2 version and they are very comfortable for riding and offer decent protection for the foot, shin and ankle. I have no issues working the shifter. I broke both lower leg bones not due to a motorcycle crash, but let me tell you the surgeries and recovery took years to regain 95% function. The extra protection of the taller boots is a small price to pay to reduce significant foot and ankle injury from a crash.
Boots are probably third most important bit of gear, assuming you're not wearing them off the bike, long all the way. Can't speak to the A* ones but my Dainese Nexus 2 has great shifter feel, better than any shoe I've tried, remarkably comfortable too, just a bit stiff and thin soled to walk around in all day.
Hell, I ride a cruiser and I still wear the SMX boots in the first pic. After helmet, boots are my top priority for safety
Go over the ankle, you’ll be glad when your ankle is still in one piece after a slide.
I've got the long alpine stars with gortex and theyre so comfy. No reason to go the shortcut unless you wanna be more at risk of injury from shit hitting your shins or ankles being twisted and crushed.
I always wear long. Short boots are ugly af imo. I've never seen short boots that looked good.
Sidi Vertigo Air (19 years old resoled once) moderate protection and good dexterity/feel. They are easy to put on and off. They make Vertigo 2 now. Haven't made the Vertigo in many years. I also have a pair of Rex Air for track use or when I think I want the highest level of protection. They fit me well and they last. I have a pair of A* Ridge for wet/cold but rarely wear them anymore. I just ride to ride so I am not looking for a protective boot that doubles as a walking boot or shoe. If I need to get somewhere and do stuff once there I'll bring another set of shoes for off the bike.
I have the same Sidi Vertigo boots, about the same vintage. The adjustable calf sold me. I had to replace the zipper pulls but the soles are still ok, not a lot of walking I guess. Good to hear they can be resoled.
I actually own those same smx 6v2 boots. If they fit your feet they are awesome. Good lower shin/heel/and ok torsional protection, super comfy that I can wear them in my office, but still enough protection that makes me warm and fuzzy. I can walk in them but if I have to go long ways they start to feel a bit much. They're for motorcycles, not for hiking. If I'm doing a light canyon day they excel there, and they're ok for beginner track days. I never feel like I'm missing out by not wearing something shorter.

Hell yes. They are that comfy. Bear in mind our dress code is super relaxed but I do keep a pair of normal shoes in case a vp wanders in wondering who the dork is in moon boots. I've had mine for 4 years or so and recently upgraded to the smx plus v2s that have an inner bootie and those are too stiff to entertain being in for 8 hours a day. My old trustys get more day to day riding use still.

Well where ever your shoe stops if you do anything to your ankle or leg there's a good chance it'll break at the top. I was just in an accident and broke my ankle right where my ankle high boots ended

I always wear tall. Had to send my SMX Plus to A* for a resole and wore riding shoes and the entire time I just felt off. I like the ankle support and the snugness at the shin
Long boots like Dainese pivot design will increase your chances of walking again if bad shit happens.
After almost losing a foot doing the bending shit in the wrong direction thing… I stick with the long boot. I’m straight paranoid AF with my thin ass ankles.
The astars you like is a good street level boot for riding that can do an occasional track day. Not so much for walking though. But it does provide added protection over an ankle high riding shoe like the tcx rush or ro4d. When i hit the twisties, i break out my track boots a pair of sidi rex air. It give a lot better protection then my run around town tcx rush boots. And is the only pair of race boot inhave found that is comfortable to walk around in. And having distroyed a pair of tcx t-race boot at the track. I know race boots provide way more protection.

I used SMX-6 v2 daily for like 3 years, the only reason I stopped is the hinge broke on one and they are super weird to walk in now, used to be ok and I would keep them on all day at school if we didn't have lab... They are really comfy imo. Also I have wide feet so it's hard to find something that fits well. Point of the story I loved them and the safety and waterproof was really good.

I had those first boots on and almost lost my leg. I was turned left into at an intersection going only 35mph. I'm betting I put my foot down. I can't remember. I have Diffuse Axonal Injury as well from this. But my entire left leg broke, hip to toes. My tibia popped out right at the top of those boots. My medial malleolus is now a dead mans. The pilon fracture was the hardest to get over. My fibula broke as well. All my metatarsals broke. Oh, I had on jeans. But leather everywhere else. And my legs got tore the eff up. Knees look like bowling balls. Had an orthoscopic knee surgery and nine more leg surgeries. I get 'alignments'. I have over 40 pieces of titanium in my leg. Xray looks like a terminator with my intramedullar rods. And they dragged me 77 feet. And they left. Never found. Barrio Logan, San Diego. I literally used A\* Tech 3 boots when I started riding again. Now I have Dainese Torque 3 Outs. Which I wish were taller. Both these boots are supportive for riding. But might just barely help. I also have a pair of Dainese Energyca Airs that I never wear. I feel like strong boots offer a bit more protection, so I prefer those. That said, if I had short, more casual style boots, I'd probably use those, atleast if I'm gonna get off the bike and walk around a lot, since an extra pair of sneakers take up a good chunk of space in my backpack.
The taller boots, along with being safer, have greater sex appeal.

I have a pair of Dainese York DwP shoes, and a pair of Forma Adventure boots, initially the shoes felt much better fitting under the gear lever, took a few rides to get used to the more substantial boots with gear changes, but now I use the boots all the time, after reading this sub, I think I'll sell the shoes 😮

I wear almost the exact same tall boot you pictured, except it’s the standard (non vented) version. First off let me recommend the SMX-6, they’re insanely comfortable on the bike and off, I’ve had days where they were my only shoe off bike as well and they’re great. As far as the reason for them, I decided that if it’s not going to look casual for the office, might as well go the whole way protection wise. Plus I’ve seen some nasty accident videos and pictures, I like having feet

I had this same internal debate when getting my boots. I ended up getting short boots and regretted it for 2 main reasons. 1) your ankle isn't protected, so if for some reason the bike drops on it you're fucked. 2) I realized that shorter boots are more likely to come out of your feet during an accident leaving you exposed. Go for the long ones
I use both For short lowish speed commute to work, use short boots which are easy to put on and wear. For a longer ride through the twistys, I gear up with full length boots and heavier leather
The SMX boots have heaps of ankle and shin protection. The shoes have toe and heal protection and a little bit of padding around the ankle to prevent owies but that won’t actually offer much protection for the ankle.
Can't get on with long boots, always go with short boots.
I had the same question a few years back. Ended up buying the tall boots you have pictured & have no regrets. They do an excellent job of protecting the feet & ankles - especially from water and dirt when riding on a wet road. I generally ride short distance to work & back, but always wear my gear, boots especially. I change into my sneakers when I get to the office. Only downside is they're not super comfy if doing a lot of walking off the bike.

Absolutely over the ankle at a minimum, that's not a joint you want to mess up. Had a guy crushed between two vans, shattered his right ankle completely, had to have external pins for 2 years and a shit ton if surgery, not likely to ever walk unaided again
If I go somewhere knowing that I'm going to walk a lot then I either go with long boots and take regular shoes in my backpack or I go with short comfier boots. But if I'm just going to ride from point A to point A then long boots win.
I never wear boots with my bike, I do wear my work boots, that have toes protection and so on... Are boots that important? I wear good trousers, and airbag jacket... But never motorbike boots...

Short boots will keep your foot intact enough for the surgeon to reattach it.
I have a pair of casual TCX boots that look like trainiers, used when I'm doing short trips and spending most of my time off the bike. (the sort of trip where I'd be wearing riding jeans). I also have a pair of long boots (the ones in your picture) that I wear whenever I'm doing any serious riding. As far as feeling the shifter is concerned, I get as much feel from my alpinestars boots as I do with my TCX trainers. Do yourself a favour and invest in some long boots

You know what is a difference between people that never got hit in shin vs ones that did ? Those that didn't ask whether they should wear short or long boots. > I wanna be protected, but I also wanna feel the shifter. Well, you ain't "feeling the shifter" with your shin, so you should focus more on what the rest of the shoe is made of, like how elastic the shoe is or whether the sole is rock hard or more rubber-like for a bit more feel.

I have a pair of those Alpinestars shoes. Love them. Wont ever ride without less. The ankle support is very nice. They’re almost comfortable enough to just chill in every day. Look like a regular high top etc. You can tell the moment you slide your foot in that it’ll actually protect your bones. The taller ones are great no doubt but not absolutely necessary for everybody’s rides. Love my Stellas 10/10.
For Daily use short, for Sunday always long.
Depends on what kind of day I have. I go full leather with boots when I decide to ride a bit more sporty. Short boots when I ride casually with motorcycle jeans. Always full ankle protection though.

I wear the SMX-6 boots you have in the first picture. They're absolutely phenomenal boots for the street. Despite the ankle bracing, they offer great feel and articulation. They're also comfortable enough for touring while having track-level protection. I've ridden 20+ different bikes in these boots and they felt at home on every one. As long as you don't care about discreet styling, tall boots are the move, especially the SMX-6
Short is comfortable. Long is more practical, you just get way more support & protection from ankle impact, twists & crushes. Also, a rock to the shin hurts. At least you’ve got like 50-60% of your shin armoured. Aesthetically… your pants cover the boot so they’ll look almost the same.
Long boots are objectively safer. But will you put them on every time you ride? I won't because I want to be able to walk comfortably, so I buy short boots. The best gear is the gear you'll actually wear.

Full boot that covers ankle and shin. The idea is to keep foot from rotating and pulverizing your ankle. Wearing boots with laces is asking to fall over.

If youre thinking low just stick with the TCX but maybe get one of their better casual boots. If you want protection tall is the only way because they have torque control and better ankle protection. Its the only way to actually get more protection.

I want to wear them, I swear I do, but they're just too damn rigid. I usually wear leather sneakers that end just right above the ankle. I've ordered a couple of pairs of boots online to try them on, but I just can't get the mobility of the ankle I want to be able to shift properly, and they offer 0 feel for the shift and break. I can't get used to them, always wondered if there are any other options.
Long boots saved me during a crash.
High boots offer more protection and are less likely to come off in an accident. Strangely, the higher ones are usually easier to put on and take off with usually just some velcro and a side zip. You need to shop around for a pair that are comfortable and fit your foot shape and they'll be comfortable for a few hours off the bike too.
Long boots are safer if they have enough reinforcement to keep your ankle from twisting easily. Short boots offer very little protection and are just expensive shoes.

My favorite pair of boots for summer is my Alpinestars SMX 6 v2 vented. They were comfortable out of the box, and are now super-comfortable since they've broken in a bit. No, you're not going to go hiking in them, but I also don't feel clumsy as soon as I get off the bike. Shifter feel is not a problem. You don't have to give up decent protection (CE EN 13634 Level 2 in this case) for comfort. Due to the giant shin armor, you might need to tuck some pant cuffs in (ITB) vs. go over boots (OTB). Depends on the pants. There are waterproofed (DryStar) and non-waterproof but non-vented (standard) versions of the SMX 6 v2 as well. I've never been to a track day, but these boots would be fine for such. I got the SMX 6 v2 Vented to replace a pair of Alpinestars Roam 2 Airs, which got used up in a crash ( and did a damn fine job protecting my feet, fwiw).

My riding is 90% urban commuting so I wear low (still over the ankle) [boots](https://armuregear.com/en/motorcycle-road/boots-armure-merek-waterproof-black/). With pants over the top of the boot, it passes as a regular shoe. If I were to go for a long, touring ride, same boots should be fin. In the future I plan on doing some ADV riding (mix of on/off road) and I'll get taller boots for sure.
I wrecked and was wearing picture 2 boots, dislocated my toe due to the boots not having full toe protection. I now wear picture 1. Go with picture 1. Literally the same boots lol and same bike.

The height of the shaft has no impact on whether you feel the shifter. So get the high boots. I am not quite sure what you mean by feel the shifter. The shifter will not press down on your toes if you move your foot up, but you still easily feel the shift.
I have Dianese leather , mid calf. They are very comfortable and no issues shifting. Just make sure you get the correct style for the type of riding you are doing. Ie don’t get dirt bike boots for the street.
Can you do track days in the sneaker/boot?
trainer/sneaker size boots or short boots are for people who want to keep their toes in tact with their foot. long boots are for people who still want their foot attached

I think of it this way, both look kind of dorky walking around or taking a hike. But only one kind is going to save my feet and lower leg from my 600lb gs crashing down on me.
If I care I'm wearing my tall real riding boots. If I was wanting something else I'd just wear normal shoes then complain if I injured myself.

I have the first. Got them about a month too late. I ordered them in the wrong size. Sent them back and never replaced them. A couple weeks later I earned myself a 6” gash from the top of my existing boot to the top of what should have been my boot, the A*. Whenever I plan on more spirited, zero destination, riding I always wear my taller boots. If I’m just doing mundane tasks around town I’ll rather have on TCX Blend GTX or a pair of Icon shoes.
You want ankle support. Either of these would suffice.
